Getting a paw print in Rio de Janeiro: the local picture
Brazilians mark Finados, the Day of the Dead on November 2, by visiting graves and remembering family, and some pet owners like to light a candle or set out flowers for their animal on that day too. A memorial doesn't have to be permanent to matter. A plant on the balcony, a stone from a favorite beach, or a keepsake worn every day can all hold a memory.
In Brazil only about 9% of people are cremated, so many Rio families are deciding for the first time what to do with ashes. There's no single right answer. Some keep them at home in a simple container, some choose a keepsake that holds a small amount, and others prefer a paw print or a photo and let the ashes go somewhere meaningful. Take your time; the remains can wait until you're ready.
Many households in Rio de Janeiro rent, move often or have more than one pet. Prints travel well: a sealed clay disc or a framed ink print moves with you, while a garden burial can't. If you have two or three animals, consider taking all their prints on the same afternoon, while everyone is well. It turns a sad job into an ordinary family project and means nobody is left out later.
About 6,748,000 people live in Rio de Janeiro.
9%[1]
Only about 8-9% of people who die in Brazil are cremated, according to Brazil's private cemetery and crematoria union (Sincep).

Paw-print add-ons at US crematories have a median price of about $32, from $10 to $76.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Brazil
Burial is still the familiar path in Brazil; cremation covers only about 9%[1] of the dead there, and some owners worry that making a keepsake of a pet's paw will seem odd to the neighbors. It isn't odd at all. A print is a quiet, gentle memorial, not unlike keeping a curl from a baby's first haircut. Make it for yourself, and share it only if and when you want to.

Getting a clean print in Rio de Janeiro in any season
If you're thinking of an outdoor memorial in Rio de Janeiro, such as a garden stone with your pet's print pressed in, the weather decides when to make it. Concrete doesn't cure well in frost or fierce heat. Take the print now in clay or ink and keep it indoors, then make the stone in a mild month when the ground is workable.

Local rules worth knowing in Brazil
Paw prints sit outside most regulation, but the aftercare around them doesn't. Your local council or city, and the wider rules for Brazil, may limit burying a pet at home and scattering ashes in public places. Check the notes below before you plan a garden memorial with your pet's print pressed into it.
Getting a paw print in Rio de Janeiro, step by step
- If your pet is still with you, don't wait. Take a print on a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, when your pet is relaxed. A print from a living pet is usually the clearest.
- Choose your method. Clay for something to hold, ink or inkless paper for engraving and jewelry later. Our kit chooser helps you decide.
- Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors so the pads, not the fur, make the shape.
- Hold the leg, not the paw, push down evenly in one motion, and raise it again without sliding. Make a few attempts and choose the sharpest one.
- Dry clay slowly indoors over two to three days, flipping it now and then, and finish with a coat of matte acrylic sealer.
- Photograph or scan the print flat in daylight. Makers can work from that image, so the original stays at home.
Remembering your pet through their print
Space is tight in most Rio apartments, so a memorial here often needs to be small: a shelf with a photo and a little container, a piece of jewelry, or a framed paw print. If your pet loved the sea or the forest, you might keep a small share at home and scatter the rest. Ask your provider whether they can divide the ashes so different family members can each keep something.

Questions people ask
How do Brazil attitudes to cremation compare?
Exame, citing Sincep (2024) puts the Brazil human cremation rate at about 9%[1]. We show it on the Rio de Janeiro page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Is a paw print included when a vet comes to our home in Rio de Janeiro?
Often, but not always. Many home-visit vets bring a clay kit and include one print in their fee; others charge for it or leave it to the crematory. Ask when you book, and check whether a flat ink copy is possible as well. Home goodbyes are no longer unusual: in the Dog Aging Project, 22.8% of dogs who were euthanized died at home[5]. You can also take your own print before the vet arrives.
Can I get a print of my bird's feet?
Yes, with care. Birds are light and their toes are delicate, so use very soft clay and the gentlest pressure, or an inkless kit with treated paper. Ink is best avoided because birds preen and may swallow it. An avian vet can help if your bird is nervous. The result is a lovely, delicate impression of the toes and scales.
Is ink safe on my pet's paw?
Use a pet-safe, non-toxic, water-based ink made for paw prints, not a stamp pad or permanent marker. Wipe the paw clean straight afterwards with a damp cloth or unscented pet wipe and dry between the toes so your pet doesn't lick any off. For fluffy paws, cats and anxious pets, an inkless kit, where a special wipe reacts with treated paper, avoids ink on fur altogether.
How long before the print and ashes come back in Rio de Janeiro?
By our estimate, most pet crematories return ashes within about 3 to 14 days[4], and a print taken at intake usually travels with them. A print taken by your vet may come back sooner, handed to you on the day or posted separately. Ask providers in Rio de Janeiro which applies, and request a snapshot of the print if you'll be waiting a week or more; it's reassuring to know it came out clear.
Will my vet or crematory take a paw print before cremation?
Most will if asked, and many include a clay or ink print in the package. But requests can be missed on a busy day, especially at emergency clinics. Mention it when you book, ask for it to be written on the aftercare form and ask whether it comes back to you that day or with the ashes. Once your pet has been cremated, the chance is gone.
