Finding someone to take your pet's print, wherever you live
Where you live changes who can take a print and how quickly, but not whether it's possible. About 95 million[1] US households have a pet, and help exists in most places if you know where to ask.

Why location matters
What actually changes from one place to another
The print itself is the same in Boise or Brighton: a paw, some clay or ink, and a steady hand. What changes is who is nearby to take it, how much notice they need, and whether a specialist maker is within driving distance or only reachable by post.
Pet ownership also varies a lot by region, and more pets usually means more clinics and home-visit vets offering prints. Around 71.8%[2] of households in Wyoming own a pet, compared with 49.7%[3] in New York. Use the directory below to open the page for your country, state or city. By our estimate, Wyoming sees ~60 per 1,000 households[4] pet deaths a year as a lower bound, against ~42 per 1,000 households[5] in New York, which gives a rough sense of how often local clinics are asked for prints.

Cities, towns and farms
City, small-town and rural differences
In cities, you'll usually find several home-euthanasia vets and at least one pet crematory, and many include a clay print as standard or as an add-on. Independent makers who cast, engrave or frame prints tend to cluster in larger metro areas too.
In small towns and rural areas, the local clinic may be the only option, and it may not stock print kits. The simplest fix is to keep a kit at home once your pet becomes a senior, so you're not relying on anyone else's supplies. An inkless kit lasts in a drawer for a long time and needs no drying space. If you'd rather use clay, our guide to making a clay paw print at home lists what you'll need.
On farms and for horses, the vet usually comes to you, and a hoof print is a job for daylight on firm, level ground. Ask the vet or equine crematory in advance, and have a board, non-toxic paint and a helper ready. Our services overview explains the hoof print method.
Wherever you are, weather matters a little. Air-dry clay cracks in hot, dry rooms and stays soft for days in humid ones, so in a desert summer dry it slowly away from air conditioning vents, and in a damp coastal winter give it an extra day before sealing. Ink and inkless prints aren't affected, which is another reason they suit people who move house or post prints to makers.

Around the world
How it works in the US, UK, Canada and Australia
United States. Home-visit vets are common in and around big cities, and many pet crematories offer prints. One directory counts only 2 states[6] that required written documentation for pet cremation as of April 2026, so ask for your print request to be written on the booking yourself.
United Kingdom. Most pet cremations are arranged through the vet: 78%[7] of UK buyers purchased through, or on the recommendation of, their practice, according to the Competition and Markets Authority's investigation. That makes the clinic the natural place to ask for a print, and it's worth asking whether their partner crematorium offers one too.
Australia and Canada. Pet ownership is high, with 73%[8] of Australian households keeping a pet. Distances can be long outside the cities, so a home kit or a print taken at the clinic is often more practical than travelling to a specialist.

Near and far
Taking the print is local; finishing it doesn't have to be
The part that needs to happen near you is the print itself. Everything after that can travel. Engravers, jewelers, glass artists and portrait painters usually work from a high-resolution scan or photo, so a maker three states away can finish a piece as well as one down the road. Our article on turning a print into jewelry or a tattoo explains what to send.
Casts are the exception. A foam or gel mould is bulky and fragile, so ask a maker how they want it packed and shipped before you take it, or choose one close enough to drop it off. Our guide to clay, ink, metal and glass prints explains which formats post well.
Many families keep the finished print beside their pet's ashes. In the UK, figures from the Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities show 84.5%[9] of cremated remains were taken home by families rather than left at the crematorium, and a print on the same shelf is a common pairing. Our display and tag guide has ideas.

Questions people ask
Can my regular vet take a paw print?
Often, yes. Many clinics keep clay kits for euthanasia appointments, and home-visit vets frequently bring one. If yours doesn't, ask whether you can bring your own kit, or whether their partner crematory offers prints before cremation.
What if there's no pet crematory near me?
You can still get a print. Take it yourself with a home kit, ask your vet to take one at the appointment, or ask the crematory that collects from your clinic to take one when your pet arrives. Distance only matters for the moment the print is taken.
Can I send a print to a maker in another state or country?
For engraving, jewelry and art, yes: most makers work from a scan or photo you email. For casts, check shipping first, because moulds are fragile. Crossing borders with finished keepsakes is usually straightforward, but ask the maker about customs forms.
Do rules about prints differ by state?
There aren't specific laws about taking a paw print. What differs is how pet cremation paperwork works, so it's wise to ask for your print request to be written on the booking or cremation form, wherever you are.
How do I get a hoof print for my horse in a rural area?
Plan it with your equine vet or farrier before the day. You'll need a clean, picked-out hoof, non-toxic paint, a sturdy board or canvas and a helper to steady your horse on firm, level ground. A saved final shoe is a simple alternative.
