Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Frankfurt
Frankfurt apartments suit memorials that sit comfortably on a shelf or windowsill. German workshops make plain urns in oak, ceramic and slate, as well as small keepsake pendants and engraved stones, and many offer laser engraving of the name and dates. Urn sizes vary a great deal with the size of the animal, so ask your provider how much ash to expect before ordering anything online.
The Stadtwald south of the Main and the riverside paths along both banks are familiar ground for many Frankfurt pet owners. Scattering ashes in city woods or parks is generally not something you can simply do in Germany, so look into it first. A biodegradable urn under a young tree on family property in the Taunus or Odenwald, or a memorial stone in a private garden, can give you a place to return to.
Long commutes and full diaries in Frankfurt mean many pets spend the day with a dog walker, a sitter or a daycare. If your pet is elderly or unwell, have a short conversation with whoever cares for them while you're out: who to call first, which vet to use, and that you'd like a paw print taken before anyone arranges collection. Leave a small clay kit with your emergency notes, so the one request that can't wait isn't lost.
Frankfurt is home to about 764,000 people, the largest of the 2 Hesse communities we cover.
The closest communities we cover are Wiesbaden (20 miles), Mainz (21 miles) and Mannheim (44 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Frankfurt too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
76.0%[1]
In 2023, 76.0% of deaths in Germany were cremated (164 crematoria).
~$32[2]
Paw-print add-ons at US crematories have a median price of about $32, from $10 to $76.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

What local funeral habits mean for a print
With about 76.0%[1] of people in Germany cremated, most local families already know the rhythm of a cremation: collection, a few days' wait, then the ashes come home. A print fits neatly into the start of that process, before collection. Once your pet is cremated, the chance is gone, so the first phone call is the right moment to mention it.
That Germany rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Frankfurt only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Weather in Frankfurt and your pet's print
Local weather in Frankfurt affects a paw print more than you might think. In hot, dry spells, air-dry clay can crack if it dries too fast, so dry it slowly indoors and turn it often. In humid months it stays soft for longer, so be patient. In cold weather, warm the clay in your hands and never let plaster freeze before it has set.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Frankfurt
We haven't found a published European price for a paw print on its own, so compare like with like. Ask two providers in Frankfurt the same three questions: is a print included, what is it made of, and can I see it before cremation? For scale, a Norwegian pet crematorium lists separate cremation from NOK 3,790 for pets up to 20 kg[4], and a print is typically a small fraction of that.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Hesse: Hesse costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What the law in Hesse does and doesn't cover
Paw prints sit outside most regulation, but the aftercare around them doesn't. Your local council or city, and the wider rules for Hesse, may limit burying a pet at home and scattering ashes in public places. Check the notes below before you plan a garden memorial with your pet's print pressed into it.
In Germany, ask your vet or Tierkrematorium for a Pfotenabdruck, either in clay or ink, before cremation. Many pet crematoria also offer plaster casts, a Gipsabdruck, as a 3D keepsake. If you're planning a home burial where allowed, you'll have time to take the print yourself first. Keep plaster indoors in winter so it sets properly.
In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake
- Decide who will take the print: you, your vet, or the crematory when your pet arrives. Whoever does it earliest gives you the most say over the result.
- Tell the crematory in writing that you want a print, and ask for a photo of it before cremation.
- Ask how your pet is identified from collection to return, so the print and the ashes definitely belong together.
- Ask about fur clippings at the same time; many providers offer one with the print.
- Plan the finishing later. Jewelry or artwork can wait as long as it needs to; make that choice once you feel ready.
- If you'd like help, send us a few details; we'll write back by email laying out the options.
Remembering your pet through their print
Germany has a long tradition of pet cemeteries, and several serve the Rhine-Main area, which appeals to families who want a grave to visit with flowers on the anniversary. Others keep the urn at home and light a candle on the day. Both are common in Hesse, and there is no need to decide immediately; ashes can be kept safely until you are ready.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Frankfurt?
The closest communities we cover are Wiesbaden (about 20 miles), Mainz (about 21 miles) and Mannheim (about 44 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Frankfurt too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is cremation common in Germany?
For people, yes: about 76.0%[1] of Germany deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Frankfurt follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can I get my dog's nose print?
Yes. Dab a small amount of pet-safe ink onto the nose with a soft sponge, or use an inkless wipe, then press a folded card gently against the nose from the front. It usually takes a few tries. The ridges on a dog's nose make a striking engraving on a pendant or an urn, and many providers take a nose print alongside the paw.
Should I use a local jeweler or an online maker for a paw print pendant?
Both work. A local jeweler or engraver in Frankfurt lets you see samples and hand over the print in person. Online makers usually work from a photo or scan, so the original never has to leave your home. Ask either one for a proof before they start, and check how long it will take: a custom silver print charm takes about two weeks at one US maker[6].
Is it possible to print a guinea pig's or hamster's feet?
Yes, but it takes patience and a light touch. Tiny feet leave only faint marks in ink, so very soft modeling clay or an inkless kit usually works better. Warm the clay well, cradle your pet in a towel on your lap and press the clay gently up to the foot rather than lowering the foot. For a hamster, one clear hind foot is plenty. If your pet is frightened, stop; letting your vet take it after death is gentler.
Is a paw print included when a vet comes to our home in Frankfurt?
Often, but not always. Many home-visit vets bring a clay kit and include one print in their fee; others charge for it or leave it to the crematory. Ask when you book, and check whether a flat ink copy is possible as well. Home goodbyes are no longer unusual: in the Dog Aging Project, 22.8% of dogs who were euthanized died at home[7]. You can also take your own print before the vet arrives.
