Paw Print Keepsakes in India: what to know
Paw print keepsakes in India follow the same basic choices as anywhere: a clay impression, an ink or inkless print, or a 3D cast, taken by you, your vet or the crematory. What differs is how aftercare is organized and priced, and which local rules apply to burial and scattering. This page covers India as a whole; each city page adds local detail.
In India, as elsewhere, families increasingly keep a print even when they choose communal cremation or a simple burial. It's affordable, and it works whether or not ashes come home. If cost is a worry, start there: making one at home is cheap, and you can decide on finishing it, or not, much later.

How India thinks about cremation, and why prints matter
With about 80%[1] of people in India cremated, most local families already know the rhythm of a cremation: collection, a few days' wait, then the ashes come home. A print fits neatly into the start of that process, before collection. Once your pet is cremated, the chance is gone, so the first phone call is the right moment to mention it.
That India rate is a human statistic published by Wikipedia: Cremation by country (citing National Geographic) (2014); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
Hong Kong shows how packages are built: one provider lists basic individual cremation at HKD 1,300 for a 1 to 5 kg pet[2], with extras added on top. A paw print is typically one of the least expensive extras. Wherever you are, ask providers in India to price the print separately so you can compare fairly.
In India, many pet funeral companies offer a farewell ceremony, individual cremation and an urn as one price. If a paw print isn't listed, ask whether they can take one before cremation. For comparison, a Singapore provider lists private cremation at SGD 280 for a cat under 5 kg[3], and a US crematory network charges $49 for ink paw prints[4].
| Place or item | Published price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo, individual cremation, pet under 5 kg | JPY 22,000[5] | Tax included; ask about a print |
| Singapore, private cremation, cat under 5 kg | SGD 280[3] | Niches extra |
| Hong Kong, individual cremation, 1 to 5 kg pet | HKD 1,300[2] | Basic package |
| Paw print add-on (US median, for comparison) | about $32[6] | No published local price found |

Burial, scattering and prints in India
Burial rules in many places, including India, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.
How to make sure a print is taken in time
- Mention the print when you book rather than waiting until the appointment itself, whether that's the euthanasia or the cremation. Ask the team to note it on the aftercare form.
- Ask what kind they take: some clinics do clay only, some ink, some both. If there's any chance you'll want jewelry made, request an ink or inkless version too.
- Ask for two copies when several people at home would each like their own.
- Ask to see or photograph the print before your pet leaves the clinic, so it can be retaken if it's smudged.
- Check how it comes back: in your hands the same day, or alongside the ashes later, and what name goes on it.
- Keep the paperwork so that, once everything is returned, the invoice, ashes and print can be tied together.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
A clear print can become almost anything: a silver charm, an engraved urn, a ceramic tile, an embroidered cushion or the stencil for a tattoo. You don't have to decide straight away. Keep the original safe, photograph it and come back to the question in a few months, when you know what you'd like to see every day.

Questions people ask
What do other owners in India choose for a paw print keepsake?
We don't publish made-up figures on that. We do run short, anonymous polls on what readers chose, from clay discs to engraved jewelry, and you can see the live results. They count one vote per person and aren't a scientific survey, but they give a feel for how other owners decided.
How much does a paw print cost in India?
Published prices for prints alone are scarce, because most are sold within a cremation package or quoted on request. As a benchmark, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[4], and a UK studio casts a small dog's paw in resin from about £120[8]. Ask local providers for a written price.
Can I get a hoof print from a horse in India?
Yes. Ask your farrier to trim and clean the hoof, then press it into a thick clay slab or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Many horse owners also keep the last shoe and a braid of tail hair. Do it while your horse is still well if you can.
Should I take a print of my senior pet now?
If you can, yes. A relaxed, living pet usually gives the crispest print, and there's no time pressure. Choose a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, and take several so you can keep the clearest. Many owners in India say the afternoon itself becomes a memory.
Are there rules about paw prints in India?
No. You can take, keep, post and display a paw print, cast or ashes pendant freely. The rules in India cover burial and scattering, which matter if you plan a garden stone set with the print or want to scatter ashes after keeping a pinch for jewelry.
Can my vet in India take a paw print before cremation?
Almost always, if you ask in time. Mention it when you book the appointment or the cremation, ask for it on the aftercare form and ask to see it before your pet leaves. If the vet can't, the crematory can usually take one at intake. After cremation, it's too late.
