A paw print to keep, in Sapporo

Sapporo, Hokkaido

Paw print keepsakes in Sapporo: where to start

Temples across Japan hold memorial services for pets, and many families in Sapporo mark dates such as the 49th day or the first anniversary with a visit, flowers or incense. Obon in summer is another time people remember animals they have lost. If these customs matter to you, ask a provider whether they can connect you with a memorial service, and whether ashes can be divided between home and a shared grave.

Because the ground in Sapporo spends much of the year under snow, many families choose memorials that live indoors: a small urn, a framed paw print, a nameplate or a piece of jewellery that holds a little ash. If you would like a garden memorial or a tree planting, spring is the natural time, once the snow has melted and the soil can be worked. A hardy plant suited to northern winters will cope with the cold.

Many households in Sapporo rent, move often or have more than one pet. Prints travel well: a sealed clay disc or a framed ink print moves with you, while a garden burial can't. If you have two or three animals, consider taking all their prints on the same afternoon, while everyone is well. It turns a sad job into an ordinary family project and means nobody is left out later.

Sapporo is home to about 1,953,000 people.

Cremation habits in Japan and the print window

Because roughly 99.97%[1] of people in Japan are cremated, ashes jewelry and keepsake urns are familiar here. A paw print pairs naturally with them: an urn engraved with your pet's actual paw, or a pendant with the print on the front and a pinch of ashes inside. If that appeals, ask for a clear flat print that a maker can work from.

That Japan rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Sapporo only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Clay, ink and the local climate

Local weather in Sapporo affects a paw print more than you might think. In hot, dry spells, air-dry clay can crack if it dries too fast, so dry it slowly indoors and turn it often. In humid months it stays soft for longer, so be patient. In cold weather, warm the clay in your hands and never let plaster freeze before it has set.

Seasonal scene for planning aftercare in Sapporo

What owners in Sapporo typically pay for a print

Pet funeral providers across Asia usually sell packages, and some include a paw print, a fur clipping or a small keepsake. We haven't found reliable local prices for prints on their own. For context, a Tokyo memorial park charges JPY 22,000 for individual cremation of a pet under 5 kg[4]. Ask providers in Sapporo exactly what their package covers.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Hokkaido: Hokkaido costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial, scattering and prints in Hokkaido

Paw prints sit outside most regulation, but the aftercare around them doesn't. Your local council or city, and the wider rules for Hokkaido, may limit burying a pet at home and scattering ashes in public places. Check the notes below before you plan a garden memorial with your pet's print pressed into it.

In Japan, pet funeral companies often sell packages with a short ceremony, cremation and an urn, and some include a paw print or fur keepsake. Ask for a nikukyu (paw pad) print before cremation if it isn't listed. During the humid rainy season in early summer, air-dry clay can take much longer to harden, so dry it indoors with a dehumidifier or air conditioning.

Your paw print plan for Sapporo

  1. Mention the print when you book rather than waiting until the appointment itself, whether that's the euthanasia or the cremation. Ask the team to note it on the aftercare form.
  2. Ask what kind they take: a clay disc, an ink print or both. If you might want jewelry later, ask for an ink or inkless print as well.
  3. Ask for two copies when several people at home would each like their own.
  4. Ask to see or photograph the print while your pet is still at the clinic; a smudged one can then be done again.
  5. Check how it comes back: in your hands the same day, or alongside the ashes later, and what name goes on it.
  6. Keep the paperwork so you can match the print, the ashes and the invoice when they arrive.

From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone

In Japan it is common to keep a pet's ashes at home for a time, often in a small urn on a family altar with a photo, incense and a favourite treat. Sapporo families frequently do the same, then decide later whether to place the ashes in a pet grave, a temple's shared memorial or a garden. Ask for an urn size that fits the space you have, as apartments here can be compact.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Japan?

For people, yes: about 99.97%[1] of Japan deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Sapporo follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Should I use a local jeweler or an online maker for a paw print pendant?

Both work. A local jeweler or engraver in Sapporo lets you see samples and hand over the print in person. Online makers usually work from a photo or scan, so the original never has to leave your home. Ask either one for a proof before they start, and check how long it will take: a custom silver print charm takes about two weeks at one US maker[6].

How long before the print and ashes come back in Sapporo?

By our estimate, most pet crematories return ashes within about 3 to 14 days[5], and a print taken at intake usually travels with them. A print taken by your vet may come back sooner, handed to you on the day or posted separately. Ask providers in Sapporo which applies, and request a snapshot of the print if you'll be waiting a week or more; it's reassuring to know it came out clear.

How do I get my pet's paw print in Sapporo?

You have three options. Take it yourself at home with clay or an ink kit, ideally while your pet is still well. Ask your vet or in-home euthanasia vet to take one at the appointment. Or ask the pet crematory to take one at intake, before cremation. Whichever you choose, ask for it in advance and check the print is clear before your pet leaves.

Can I take a paw print or an ashes pendant through customs?

Paw prints in clay or on card are simply craft items and need no paperwork. Ashes are different: some countries and airlines ask for the cremation certificate and prefer ashes in hand luggage, in a container that can be screened. Carry the certificate from the crematorium, keep any jewelry holding ashes in your carry-on and check the airline's and the destination's rules before you travel from Sapporo.

Can I get a print of my bird's feet?

Yes, with care. Birds are light and their toes are delicate, so use very soft clay and the gentlest pressure, or an inkless kit with treated paper. Ink is best avoided because birds preen and may swallow it. An avian vet can help if your bird is nervous. The result is a lovely, delicate impression of the toes and scales.
