How owners in Sendai get a paw print
In Sendai homes, a pet's urn often sits on a shelf or next to the family altar, and many families divide the bones between an urn at home and a temple's shared memorial. Compact ceramic urns, wooden boxes and photo frames are popular. Ask for any paw print or fur clipping before the cremation, since it must be taken before collection.
The 2011 earthquake and tsunami left deep marks on the Sendai coast, and memorials to that loss stand near the shore in Wakabayashi and beyond. For many residents, remembrance is part of daily life. Pet memorials are usually smaller and private: an urn at home, a tree or bio urn in a family garden, or a portion of ashes kept in jewellery that can travel with you.
Long commutes and full diaries in Sendai mean many pets spend the day with a dog walker, a sitter or a daycare. If your pet is elderly or unwell, have a short conversation with whoever cares for them while you're out: who to call first, which vet to use, and that you'd like a paw print taken before anyone arranges collection. Leave a small clay kit with your emergency notes, so the one request that can't wait isn't lost.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Japan
Cremation accounts for about 99.97%[1] of human deaths in Japan, so many households already have a shelf or cabinet where family ashes and photos sit. A pet's print tends to join that shelf. That's worth knowing before you choose a format: a clay disc needs a small stand, an ink print suits a frame the same size as your photos, and a print engraved straight onto the urn saves space altogether.
For the Japan figure we rely on Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Sendai rather than as pet data.
Getting a clean print in Sendai in any season
If you're thinking of an outdoor memorial in Sendai, such as a garden stone with your pet's print pressed in, the weather decides when to make it. Concrete doesn't cure well in frost or fierce heat. Take the print now in clay or ink and keep it indoors, then make the stone in a mild month when the ground is workable.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
In Sendai, many pet funeral companies offer a farewell ceremony, individual cremation and an urn as one price. If a paw print isn't listed, ask whether they can take one before cremation. For comparison, a Singapore provider lists private cremation at SGD 280 for a cat under 5 kg[4], and a US crematory network charges $49 for ink paw prints[5].
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Miyagi: Miyagi costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What the law in Miyagi does and doesn't cover
Burial rules in many places, including Miyagi, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.
In Japan, pet funeral companies often sell packages with a short ceremony, cremation and an urn, and some include a paw print or fur keepsake. Ask for a nikukyu (paw pad) print before cremation if it isn't listed. During the humid rainy season in early summer, air-dry clay can take much longer to harden, so dry it indoors with a dehumidifier or air conditioning.
What to do first, and what can wait
- If your pet dies unexpectedly at the clinic, ask for a few minutes alone with them before you go. Staff will almost always allow this, and many can fetch a print kit for you there and then.
- Say exactly what you want: ink, clay, a nose print, or every one of them, plus the number of copies.
- If you can't face doing it yourself, ask a nurse or technician to take it while you wait outside, and to show it to you before you go.
- Get the crematory's name and your pet's reference number from the front desk, written down.
- If no print was taken, call the crematory first thing the next morning and ask for one at intake.
- Leave the urn and the other extras for later. The print is the only decision that can't wait.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
Sendai's Tanabata festival in early August fills the shopping arcades with long paper streamers, and many residents write wishes on strips of coloured paper. Some families borrow the idea for a pet, writing a short message to hang beside the urn or on a small bamboo branch at home. A gesture like that makes a memorial personal without needing anything elaborate, and children can join in easily.

Questions people ask
Why does the Sendai page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 99.97%[1] of Japan residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Should I take a paw print while my senior pet is still alive?
If you can, yes. A relaxed living pet usually gives the clearest print, and you can take as many as you like without pressure. It can also give anticipatory grief something useful to do; in an RSPCA survey, 75.4%[7] of bereaved owners said they grieved before their pet died. Choose a calm, good day and keep the session short.
Is a paw print included when a vet comes to our home in Sendai?
Often, but not always. Many home-visit vets bring a clay kit and include one print in their fee; others charge for it or leave it to the crematory. Ask when you book, and check whether a flat ink copy is possible as well. Home goodbyes are no longer unusual: in the Dog Aging Project, 22.8% of dogs who were euthanized died at home[8]. You can also take your own print before the vet arrives.
How long before the print and ashes come back in Sendai?
By our estimate, most pet crematories return ashes within about 3 to 14 days[6], and a print taken at intake usually travels with them. A print taken by your vet may come back sooner, handed to you on the day or posted separately. Ask providers in Sendai which applies, and request a snapshot of the print if you'll be waiting a week or more; it's reassuring to know it came out clear.
Will my vet or crematory take a paw print before cremation?
Most will if asked, and many include a clay or ink print in the package. But requests can be missed on a busy day, especially at emergency clinics. Mention it when you book, ask for it to be written on the aftercare form and ask whether it comes back to you that day or with the ashes. Once your pet has been cremated, the chance is gone.
Can I get my dog's nose print?
Yes. Dab a small amount of pet-safe ink onto the nose with a soft sponge, or use an inkless wipe, then press a folded card gently against the nose from the front. It usually takes a few tries. The ridges on a dog's nose make a striking engraving on a pendant or an urn, and many providers take a nose print alongside the paw.
