Paw and nose prints in Nara: a calm guide

Nara, Japan

Paw print keepsakes in Nara: where to start

Japan has the highest cremation rate in the world, and memorial practices for pets are well established. In Nara, many families keep ashes at home in a small urn on a family altar, alongside photos and flowers, while others place them in a pet memorial at a temple. A keepsake, such as jewellery holding a few ashes or a paw print impression, is also common.

Many Japanese families remember a pet at Obon in August or during the spring and autumn higan weeks around the equinoxes, with flowers, incense or a visit to the grave. A physical memorial, whether an urn on the family altar, a stone in the garden or a keepsake, gives those moments a focus. In Nara's humid summers, glazed ceramic and stone keep better than wood or paper.

Around a city this size you'll find all sorts of animals, from giant-breed dogs to horses on the edge of town. Big paws need a bigger slab of clay or a foam impression tray, and a horse needs a different approach altogether: most owners keep a hoof print pressed into a clay slab or painted onto card, with a farrier helping to lift and hold the foot.

With roughly 367,000 residents, Nara is one of the Japan communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Osaka, about 17 miles (28 km) away, which is where some providers serving Nara are based.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Osaka (17 miles, a larger centre), Kyoto (23 miles, a larger centre) and Kobe (35 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

99.97%[1]

In 2023, 99.97% of deaths in Japan were cremated (1364 crematoria).

~$32[2]

Paw-print add-ons at US crematories have a median price of about $32, from $10 to $76.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

A pet at home in Nara

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first

Cremation is the everyday choice in Japan: about 99.97%[1] of people who die there are cremated. Pet aftercare tends to follow the same habits, which means most pets here end up as a small box of ashes. Ashes don't show a paw, a nose or the shape of a toe. That's a big part of why prints matter so much in high-cremation places, and why local crematories are so used to being asked for one.

That Japan rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Nara only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Getting a clean print in Nara in any season

Whatever the weather outside, think about where the finished print will live. A sunny windowsill fades ink, a bathroom's steam softens clay, and an attic or garage swings between heat and cold. A bookshelf in a living room, away from direct light, is the safest home. If you'd like something outdoors in Nara, have a copy engraved in stone or metal and keep the original inside.

What owners in Nara typically pay for a print

Pet funeral providers across Asia usually sell packages, and some include a paw print, a fur clipping or a small keepsake. We haven't found reliable local prices for prints on their own. For context, a Tokyo memorial park charges JPY 22,000 for individual cremation of a pet under 5 kg[4]. Ask providers in Nara exactly what their package covers.

The full price table by product is on our Japan page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

What Japan allows after your pet dies

You don't need anyone's permission to take your pet's paw print, and prints, casts and ashes jewelry can be kept, posted or carried anywhere. The rules that matter in Japan are about burial and scattering. If you plan a home burial, take the print before you begin; if you plan to scatter, keep some ashes back for a print pendant first.

In Japan, pet funeral companies often sell packages with a short ceremony, cremation and an urn, and some include a paw print or fur keepsake. Ask for a nikukyu (paw pad) print before cremation if it isn't listed. During the humid rainy season in early summer, air-dry clay can take much longer to harden, so dry it indoors with a dehumidifier or air conditioning.

Your paw print plan for Nara

  1. If your pet is still with you, don't wait. Pick a quiet, settled moment, perhaps once they've eaten or come back from a walk, and make the print then. Prints taken while a pet is alive tend to come out sharpest.
  2. Choose your method. Clay if you want something to hold; ink or an inkless sheet if jewelry or engraving might come later. The kit chooser can settle it.
  3. Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors so the pads, not the fur, make the shape.
  4. Hold the leg, not the paw, push down evenly in one motion, and raise it again without sliding. Make a few attempts and choose the sharpest one.
  5. Dry clay slowly indoors over two to three days, flipping it now and then, and finish with a coat of matte acrylic sealer.
  6. Photograph or scan the print flat in daylight. Most makers only need the image, so the original never leaves home.

Remembering your pet through their print

Nara's temples and shrines, and the deer that roam freely around Nara Park, give the city a deep sense of the sacred. Many Buddhist temples in Japan offer memorial services for pets, and some families hold one at the 49th day or on anniversaries. If you want a memorial service, ask about the options, and choose whatever feels right for your family.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Japan?

For people, yes: about 99.97%[1] of Japan deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Nara follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Nara?

Usually yes. Osaka is about 17 miles away, Kyoto is about 23 miles away and Kobe is about 35 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Will I have to travel to Osaka to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Osaka (roughly 17 miles from Nara) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Is ink safe on my pet's paw?

Use a pet-safe, non-toxic, water-based ink made for paw prints, not a stamp pad or permanent marker. Wipe the paw clean straight afterwards with a damp cloth or unscented pet wipe and dry between the toes so your pet doesn't lick any off. For fluffy paws, cats and anxious pets, an inkless kit, where a special wipe reacts with treated paper, avoids ink on fur altogether.

Is a paw print included when a vet comes to our home in Nara?

Often, but not always. Many home-visit vets bring a clay kit and include one print in their fee; others charge for it or leave it to the crematory. Ask when you book, and check whether a flat ink copy is possible as well. Home goodbyes are no longer unusual: in the Dog Aging Project, 22.8% of dogs who were euthanized died at home[6]. You can also take your own print before the vet arrives.

My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?

You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.
