Paw Print Keepsakes in Mexico City: what to know
Across Mexico City, most pet crematories offer a clay or ink paw print, sometimes included in the package and sometimes as a small extra. But many owners don't know to ask until afterwards. The simplest habit is to mention the print on the very first call, whether that's to your vet, an in-home euthanasia service or the crematory.
Getting a paw print in Mexico City works much the same everywhere: you take it yourself, your vet takes it, or the crematory takes it before cremation. What changes from place to place is how much choice you have. In the bigger cities there are in-home vets, emergency hospitals and local makers who turn prints into jewelry or art. In smaller towns, the local vet is usually the one moment to ask.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Mexico City
We don't have a dependable cremation rate for Mexico City, and pet aftercare can vary a lot from one district to the next. Where services are thin, the print is the part of aftercare that's fully in your hands. A home kit, a quiet room and ten minutes are all it takes, and the result doesn't rely on what any local provider does or doesn't offer.
Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing
We haven't found published local prices for paw prints in Mexico City, so the table shows examples from the US, UK and Canada as a rough guide. The print is usually one of the cheapest parts of aftercare; the finishing, such as jewelry or engraving, is where costs rise. Ask local vets or crematories for a written price in local currency.
In many countries, the cheaper option is communal cremation, with no ashes returned. In the UAE, for example, shared cremation for pets below 5 kg is quoted at about AED 700 to 900[1]. If that's your route in Mexico City, the print becomes the main keepsake, so take it at home before collection and make two copies. It's the one memorial that doesn't depend on getting ashes back.
| Keepsake | Published price | Country |

Rules in Mexico City that touch on keepsakes
Burial rules in many places, including Mexico City, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.
A short checklist for a clean print
- For a horse, book the farrier to trim and clean the hoof first. Pick out the sole and dry it well.
- Press the hoof into a thick slab of clay resting on a board, or coat the sole in non-toxic paint and set it down on stiff card. Ask a helper to keep the leg still while you do it.
- Keep the last shoe and a length of tail or mane hair, since plenty of owners later have the hair plaited or cast in resin.
- For a bird or a very small pet, choose the softest clay or an inkless sheet, and barely press at all. Clay picks up tiny toes best.
- For a fluffy cat or rabbit, an inkless kit avoids ink on fur they'll groom later, and clay shows the long shape of a rabbit's foot.
- Dry and store every print indoors, then take a photo so any maker can use the picture, not the original.
Ways families in Mexico City keep a print close
Some families bring the print out once a year, on the anniversary or on the day their pet came home, and add something new: a photo, a pressed flower, a note from each person. Over time the box or frame becomes a record of how the family carried the memory. If an anniversary hits harder than expected, you're not alone; in RSPCA research on pet loss, 66.9%[7] of owners were surprised by how intense their grief was.

Questions people ask
Are there rules about paw prints in Mexico City?
No. You can take, keep, post and display a paw print, cast or ashes pendant freely. The rules in Mexico City cover burial and scattering, which matter if you plan a garden stone set with the print or want to scatter ashes after keeping a pinch for jewelry.
Can I get more than one copy of my pet's print in Mexico City?
Yes. Request two prints from your vet or crematory at the time of booking; it's a common request and usually costs little extra. Ink prints take seconds, so a home session can produce as many as you like. If you only have one original, scan it and have copies printed, engraved or cast, so every person in the family has their own without anyone giving up the original.
What if my pet is cremated far from home?
In rural parts of Mexico City, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.
How much does a paw print cost in Mexico City?
Published prices for prints alone are scarce, because most are sold within a cremation package or quoted on request. As a benchmark, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[2], and a UK studio casts a small dog's paw in resin from about £120[5]. Ask local providers for a written price.
Can I get a hoof print from a horse in Mexico City?
Yes. Ask your farrier to trim and clean the hoof, then press it into a thick clay slab or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Many horse owners also keep the last shoe and a braid of tail hair. Do it while your horse is still well if you can.
