Paw print keepsakes in Amsterdam: where to start
If you are thinking of scattering ashes, many Amsterdammers think of the water, whether a canal, the IJ or the North Sea coast at Zandvoort. Busy canals and beaches are shared spaces, so choose a calm, quiet moment. Setting aside a spoonful in a small urn, a pendant or a keepsake box before any scattering means something stays with you.
The Netherlands has a strong tradition of planting and gardening, and some Amsterdam families like the idea of a bio urn with bulbs or a small tree, planted in a garden, an allotment or a relative's yard in the countryside. Tulips and daffodils planted in autumn will flower in spring. If you might move, hold back a little of the ashes in a keepsake first.
Air-dry clay is fragile, and few people realize a pottery studio in a large city like Amsterdam may fire a print for them. If you use a proper stoneware or earthenware clay instead of air-dry, a studio with a kiln can fire and glaze it into something as durable as a dinner plate. Call ahead, ask what clay they accept and let the print dry right through before you drop it off, because trapped moisture can crack a piece in the kiln.
About 872,000 people live in Amsterdam, which makes it the largest of the 2 North Holland communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Haarlem (11 miles), Utrecht (21 miles) and The Hague (33 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Amsterdam routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

What local funeral habits mean for a print
On cremation, Netherlands sits in the middle, at about 68.37%[1] of human deaths, and for many families the choice is shaped by faith as much as by cost. If your beliefs lean toward burial, or you're simply unsure how you feel about cremating a pet, a paw print sits comfortably with either path. It involves nothing more than a gentle press into clay or onto card, and it leaves your pet exactly as they were.
That Netherlands rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Amsterdam only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Clay, ink and the local climate
In warm weather, the first hours after a pet dies at home matter for comfort and for the print. Keep your pet in the coolest room, on a towel, and take the print early, before the body stiffens. In cold weather, a pet kept in a chilled room will have firm pads, so press the clay gently onto the paw instead.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Amsterdam
European crematoria often price by package rather than by item. An Irish crematorium, for example, lists individual cremation from €250 for cats or dogs up to 10 kg[4]. A print is usually a modest extra within that, and jewelry or engraving from a print is priced separately by the maker. Ask providers in Amsterdam what's included before you choose.

What North Holland allows after your pet dies
There are no rules about taking a paw print; it's yours to do at home, at the clinic or at the crematory. Where North Holland does have rules is what happens next: whether your pet can be buried at home and where ashes can be scattered. Those choices can affect your print too, for example if you want it set into a garden stone or a grave marker.
In the Netherlands, ask your vet or dierencrematorium for a pootafdruk before cremation; many offer clay or ink prints within their packages. Several Dutch pet insurers contribute toward cremation costs, so check your policy. The damp climate slows air-dry clay, so allow extra drying time before framing.
A short checklist for a clean print
- For a horse, have the farrier out beforehand to trim the hoof and tidy it up. Clean the sole thoroughly and let it dry.
- Press the hoof into a thick slab of clay laid on a board, or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Have someone hold the foot steady.
- Keep the last shoe and a length of tail or mane hair, which many horse owners have braided or set into resin.
- For a bird or a very small pet, choose the softest clay or an inkless sheet, and barely press at all. Clay picks up tiny toes best.
- For a fluffy cat or rabbit, an inkless kit avoids ink on fur they'll groom later, and clay shows the long shape of a rabbit's foot.
- Dry and store every print indoors, then take a photo so any maker can use the picture, not the original.
Ways families in Amsterdam keep a print close
Amsterdam homes are compact, so many families choose a small memorial: an urn for a windowsill or bookshelf, a pendant holding a trace of ashes, a framed paw print, or a memorial stone for a balcony or houseboat deck planter. Dutch taste leans toward simple, well-designed pieces. Prints and clippings have to be taken before collection, so mention them when you first get in touch.

Questions people ask
Why does the Amsterdam page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 68.37%[1] of Netherlands residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Amsterdam?
Usually yes. Haarlem is about 11 miles away, Utrecht is about 21 miles away and The Hague is about 33 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do I stop an ink paw print from smudging?
Dry the paw with a towel first, tape the card to a hard surface and press straight down with steady pressure, then lift straight up without sliding. Too much ink blurs the pads, so dab lightly. Take three or four prints and keep the clearest. Let the ink dry fully before touching it, especially in humid weather.
My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?
You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.
Should I use a local jeweler or an online maker for a paw print pendant?
Both work. A local jeweler or engraver in Amsterdam lets you see samples and hand over the print in person. Online makers usually work from a photo or scan, so the original never has to leave your home. Ask either one for a proof before they start, and check how long it will take: a custom silver print charm takes about two weeks at one US maker[6].
My pet died at night in Amsterdam. Is it too late for a print?
No. If your pet is at home, keep them cool on a towel and take the print yourself when you feel ready, within the first few hours if you can. If your pet is at an emergency hospital, ask the staff to take one, or tell the crematory in the morning that you want a print before cremation. You don't have to decide anything else that night.
