Keeping your pet's paw print in Cardiff, Wales

Cardiff, Wales

Paw print keepsakes in Cardiff: where to start

Wales has a long tradition of remembering, from chapel graveyards to memorial benches on favourite viewpoints, and Cardiff families often carry that into how they remember a pet. A small urn on a shelf, a slate plaque in the garden, a framed paw print or a pendant with a little ash are all common. Welsh slate, famous for its durability, makes a lasting marker outdoors.

Many Cardiff families have favourite places outside the city: the Brecon Beacons, the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, or Penarth pier and the Bay barrage. Some want to scatter part of a pet's ashes somewhere meaningful. Do it discreetly and with respect for other visitors, and check with the landowner or park authority where needed. A little kept back in a keepsake means some of your pet stays close to home.

If your pet is a senior with good days left, a routine vet visit in Cardiff can be a gentle moment to ask about a print. Some clinic teams will help take one there and then, with treats on hand. You can also do it at home after a long walk, when your dog is tired, or after a meal, when your cat is sleepy and relaxed.

Cardiff is home to about 481,000 people, the largest of the 2 Wales communities we cover.

Families in Cardiff often end up using a provider from Bristol (26 miles), Swansea (34 miles) and Bath (36 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

Our estimate

145,000

Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Cardiff

How we calculated this

481,000 ÷ 2.4 = 200,417 households; × 41% (dog) + 31% (cat) = 145,000. A household with several pets counts once.

Our estimate

12,000

dog and cat deaths per year in Cardiff, our estimate

How we calculated this

145,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.74 yrs) ≈ 12,000 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

41%[1]

41% of UK households own a dog.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

31%[3]

31% of UK households own a cat.

11.74 years[4]

UK cats have a life expectancy at birth of 11.74 years.

We built the this numbers from Teng et al. 2024, Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

A pet at home in Cardiff

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first

Because United Kingdom cremates about 80.46%[5] of the people who die there, many families have no grave to visit, for people or for pets. Something has to take the place of a headstone, and a print does that job surprisingly well. It's physical, it's unmistakably your animal, and it can hang by the front door or sit on a desk. If you plan to scatter the ashes, the print may be the only memorial you keep.

The United Kingdom figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, Progress of Cremation 1885-2025 (2025). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Getting a clean print in Cardiff in any season

Local weather in Cardiff affects a paw print more than you might think. In hot, dry spells, air-dry clay can crack if it dries too fast, so dry it slowly indoors and turn it often. In humid months it stays soft for longer, so be patient. In cold weather, warm the clay in your hands and never let plaster freeze before it has set.

Seasonal scene for planning aftercare in Cardiff

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes

The CMA found that only 2%[6] of UK vet practice websites showing prices listed cremation prices at all, so the cost of a paw print is rarely visible online. The CMA's final remedies change that: practices must now set out add-on prices[7]. In Cardiff, ask for the list, find the print line and compare it with an independent crematorium; the CMA counted 96 independent pet crematoria sites across the UK[8].

What Wales allows after your pet dies

If you might move away from Wales one day, it helps to know that a print, a cast or a photograph needs no paperwork at a border, while ashes sometimes do, and a grave can't come with you at all. None of that should decide your plans, but it's worth weighing alongside what Wales allows, set out below.

In the UK, most families arrange cremation through their vet, and the CMA's 2026 remedies require practices to set out prices for add-on options as well as communal and individual cremation. Ask for a paw print by name and get the price in writing. Independent pet crematoria often take clay or ink prints too, and UK winters are damp, so give air-dry clay extra time to dry indoors before you frame or post it.

Start with the Wales rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Cardiff's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.

In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake

  1. For a horse, have the farrier out beforehand to trim the hoof and tidy it up. Clean the sole thoroughly and let it dry.
  2. Press the hoof into a thick slab of clay laid on a board, or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Have someone hold the foot steady.
  3. Keep the last shoe and a length of tail or mane hair, since plenty of owners later have the hair plaited or cast in resin.
  4. For a bird or a very small pet, use very soft clay or inkless paper and the lightest pressure. Tiny toes show best in clay.
  5. For a fluffy cat or rabbit, go inkless so nothing ends up on fur they'll wash later; for rabbits especially, clay captures the long, narrow foot well.
  6. Dry and store every print indoors, and photograph it so a maker can work from the image.

Ways families in Cardiff keep a print close

Cardiff's wet climate is worth thinking about before choosing an outdoor memorial. Painted wood and soft stone weather quickly in the rain, while slate, granite and glazed ceramic last much longer. A tree or shrub planted with a bio urn thrives in the mild, damp conditions. In a terraced house with a small yard, a potted plant or a wall plaque works well.

Questions people ask

How do United Kingdom attitudes to cremation compare?

Cremation Society of Great Britain, Progress of Cremation 1885-2025 (2025) puts the United Kingdom human cremation rate at about 80.46%[5]. We show it on the Cardiff page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Cardiff?

The closest communities we cover are Bristol (about 26 miles), Swansea (about 34 miles) and Bath (about 36 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Cardiff too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

How many pet owners live in Cardiff?

By our estimate, about 145,000 households in Cardiff have at least one dog or cat, and around 12,000 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 481,000, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.

Is it possible to print a guinea pig's or hamster's feet?

Yes, but it takes patience and a light touch. Tiny feet leave only faint marks in ink, so very soft modeling clay or an inkless kit usually works better. Warm the clay well, cradle your pet in a towel on your lap and press the clay gently up to the foot rather than lowering the foot. For a hamster, one clear hind foot is plenty. If your pet is frightened, stop; letting your vet take it after death is gentler.

Why take a paw print in Cardiff if I already have plenty of photos?

Photos show what your pet looked like; a print records something you touched every day, at actual size. We estimate Cardiff has around 145,000 dog- or cat-owning homes and loses about 12,000 of those pets a year. Most of those owners have hundreds of photos. The difference is that photos can be found later, while a print only exists if someone makes it before the body is cremated or buried, which is why it's worth doing first.

Is a paw print included when a vet comes to our home in Cardiff?

Often, but not always. Many home-visit vets bring a clay kit and include one print in their fee; others charge for it or leave it to the crematory. Ask when you book, and check whether a flat ink copy is possible as well. Home goodbyes are no longer unusual: in the Dog Aging Project, 22.8% of dogs who were euthanized died at home[10]. You can also take your own print before the vet arrives.
