Burial, cremation and paw prints in Alabama
About 42.3%[5] of people in Alabama are cremated, lower than in many places, and pet crematories can be fewer and further between. If your pet will be cremated some distance away, the print is best taken locally, by you or your vet, before the journey. Crematories often offer one at intake, but you can't check it if you're not there.

Heat, humidity, cold and drying times
Summers in Montgomery are hot: July averages highs around 94°F. Heat is hard on air-dry clay. In dry heat the surface skins over and cracks before the inside has set, so dry your print slowly indoors, away from sunny windows and air vents, and turn it every few hours. In humid heat the opposite happens: the clay stays soft for days, so be patient and don't try to speed it up in the oven unless the kit says it's bakeable.

Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up

How do Alabama attitudes to cremation compare?

Why is my clay paw print still soft days later?
Humidity slows air-dry clay a lot. In a damp spell, a print that feels firm on top can stay soft underneath for days. Keep it indoors on a wire rack, turn it every day and wait until it's pale and light all through before sealing. Don't put air-dry clay in the oven unless the kit says it's bakeable, or it can crack.
