Ketchikan, Alaska
Getting a paw print in Ketchikan: the local picture
Almost nothing survives outdoors in Ketchikan without care. Heavy rain, moss and salt air break down wood, cheap metal and resin quickly. For a garden marker, granite or slate lasts longest, set on a gravel bed so water drains. If you want ashes to stay dry indoors, a sealed urn with a screw lid or bonded base handles the damp climate better than an open box.
When a pet has lived its life around boats and docks, many Ketchikan families return ashes to the sea. That can sit alongside something you keep: a pendant with a small amount of ashes, a paw print pressed soon after death, or a photo block on a shelf. Deciding early to set some ashes aside keeps both options open, even if you scatter the rest.
Small towns rarely have a pet memorial shop, but they nearly always have someone who engraves: a monument company that letters headstones, a trophy and awards shop, or a sign maker with a laser. Many will engrave a paw print from a clean scan onto slate, wood, metal or a garden stone. Take them a photo of your pet's print and ask whether they can reproduce the real pad shapes, not a generic clip-art paw.
Ketchikan's population is around 7,939, the 6th-largest of the 10 Alaska communities we cover.
Our estimate
2,900
How many dog- or cat-owning households Ketchikan has (estimate)
How we calculated this
7,939 ÷ 2.5 = 3,176 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 2,900. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
240
dog and cat deaths per year in Ketchikan, our estimate
How we calculated this
2,900 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 240 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Cremation habits in Alaska and the print window
Because roughly 74.1%[5] of people in Alaska are cremated, ashes jewelry and keepsake urns are familiar here. A paw print pairs naturally with them: an urn engraved with your pet's actual paw, or a pendant with the print on the front and a pinch of ashes inside. If that appeals, ask for a clear flat print that a maker can work from.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Alaska figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Ketchikan tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Heat, humidity, cold and drying times
Mild days in Ketchikan make an old-fashioned sand cast possible. Press your pet's paw into a tray of damp, fine sand, pour in a thin mix of plaster and lift it out once it has set: you get a rough, textured paw that looks like a fossil. It's messier than clay, so work outdoors, but many families love the result. Avoid October, when damp air slows the plaster.
Ketchikan has a fairly mild climate, which is good news for prints. Air-dry clay usually dries in two or three days at room temperature, and ink behaves predictably. The main thing to watch is damp: in October, the wettest month, clay can take longer to harden, so keep it off windowsills and away from bathrooms until it feels completely dry and light.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
A paw print is one of the least expensive keepsakes there is. Many US crematories sell it as a small add-on: one Arizona provider lists a clay paw impression at $10, a nose print at $10 and a laser-engraved paw print at $15[6], and across the US price lists we've checked, paw-print add-ons have a median of about $32[7]. Prices in Ketchikan vary by provider, so ask whether a print is already included before you pay extra.

What Alaska allows after your pet dies
If you might move away from Alaska one day, it helps to know that a print, a cast or a photograph needs no paperwork at a border, while ashes sometimes do, and a grave can't come with you at all. None of that should decide your plans, but it's worth weighing alongside what Alaska allows, set out below.
Alaska keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Ketchikan.
The rules that apply across Alaska (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Alaska page. Ketchikan may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake
- Take a breath. When a pet dies at home, the first few hours usually leave enough time to make a print. Settle them on a towel somewhere cool.
- Gather what you need: a damp cloth, and either clay you've softened between your palms or a sheet of card fixed to a board alongside a pet-safe ink pad.
- If the leg has stiffened, bring the clay to the paw. Press it gently onto the pads rather than forcing the paw down.
- Take a nose print too should you want one; barely touch the nose with the ink pad or an inkless wipe.
- Call your vet or crematory afterwards, and let them know a print has already been made so they can skip that step.
- Let the print dry indoors, out of direct sun and well clear of radiators, before framing it or mailing it.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
Ketchikan is known for its totem poles and carving traditions, and plenty of Ketchikan households lean toward something made by hand: a carved cedar box, a beach stone with a name cut into it, or a painted keepsake. Ordering an urn or jewelry online works well, but add time for shipping to the island. Ashes keep safely while you wait, so there is no need to rush a choice.

Questions people ask
How does Ketchikan's weather affect pet aftercare?
August is the hottest month in Ketchikan, with average highs around 65°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January and February, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Is cremation common in Alaska?
For people, yes: about 74.1%[5] of Alaska deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Ketchikan follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Is Ketchikan big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 2,900 Ketchikan households keep a dog or cat and around 240 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 7,939), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Why is my clay paw print still soft days later?
Humidity slows air-dry clay a lot. In a damp spell, a print that feels firm on top can stay soft underneath for days. Keep it indoors on a wire rack, turn it every day and wait until it's pale and light all through before sealing. Don't put air-dry clay in the oven unless the kit says it's bakeable, or it can crack.
How do I get a clear print from very furry paws?
Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors, leaving the fur around the edge, which gives the print its outline. For cats, long-haired dogs and rabbits, an inkless kit or soft clay often works better than ink. Rabbits have no pads at all, so clay shows the long shape of the hind foot beautifully.
How long does a clay paw print take to dry?
Air-dry clay usually takes two to three days at room temperature, longer in a damp spell such as October in Ketchikan. Dry it on a wire rack indoors, turning it daily, until it's pale and light all through. Bakeable clay can be fired in a home oven as the kit directs. Seal either kind with a matte acrylic sealer once dry.
