El Mirage, Arizona
Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in El Mirage
The West Valley sun fades and cracks most outdoor memorials within a few summers. If you want a garden marker, choose natural stone or bronze, set it in the shade of a wall or tree, and avoid resin. For a living memorial, desert-adapted plants like a Texas sage or a desert willow need much less water than lawn or roses.
El Mirage is a diverse city, with many Hispanic families alongside newcomers from across the country. Some families keep a small home altar for a pet, with a photo, candle and favorite toy; others prefer a plain urn on a shelf or a stone in the garden. Pick what feels right for your family's own way of remembering, and let the children have a say.
If your pet will travel to a crematory near Peoria, the journey can take a day or two, depending on collection schedules. Many crematories offer a print at intake, which is a useful backup. But if you can, take your own before your pet leaves El Mirage. That way you have it in your hands and don't depend on anyone else remembering.
El Mirage is home to about 35,820 people, the 27th-largest of the 29 Arizona communities we cover. Peoria, roughly 5 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover El Mirage run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Surprise (4 miles, a larger centre), Peoria (5 miles, a larger centre) and Glendale (9 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to El Mirage too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate

Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in El Mirage
How we calculated this

How we calculated this
13,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,100 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

Cremation habits in Arizona and the print window
When roughly 80.7%[5] of human funerals in Arizona end in cremation, the whole system is built for speed, and pet aftercare often runs the same way. Collection can be booked for the same afternoon, and some crematories cremate within a day or two. That efficiency is a kindness, but it also shrinks the time in which a print can be taken. Ask how soon cremation will happen, and if it's quick, take the print yourself before collection.
The Arizona figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Getting a clean print in El Mirage in any season
Summers in El Mirage are hot: July averages highs around 105°F. Heat is hard on air-dry clay. In dry heat the surface skins over and cracks before the inside has set, so dry your print slowly indoors, away from sunny windows and air vents, and turn it every few hours. In humid heat the opposite happens: the clay stays soft for days, so be patient and don't try to speed it up in the oven unless the kit says it's bakeable.
If you're planning a home goodbye in May, June, July, August, September and October, consider booking the vet for early morning. Your pet will be more comfortable before the heat builds, the house is cooler for taking a print, and collection can happen before the afternoon peak. Take the print first, while the morning is still quiet. If you'd hoped to say goodbye outside, a shaded corner of the yard at dawn is kinder than the afternoon sun.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
A paw print is one of the least expensive keepsakes there is. Many US crematories sell it as a small add-on: one Arizona provider lists a clay paw impression at $10, a nose print at $10 and a laser-engraved paw print at $15[6], and across the US price lists we've checked, paw-print add-ons have a median of about $32[7]. Prices in El Mirage vary by provider, so ask whether a print is already included before you pay extra.

What the law in Arizona does and doesn't cover
Rules in Arizona say a good deal about where a pet can be buried and very little about how a crematory keeps track of each animal. That's one more reason to take your own print: made before collection, it's a record you created yourself. Ask your provider how pets are tagged, and read the burial and scattering notes below for the rest.
Arizona keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers El Mirage.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Arizona level first; our Arizona rules summary has the detail. Then check whether El Mirage or your HOA adds anything.
Your paw print plan for El Mirage
- Decide who will take the print: you, your vet, or the crematory when your pet arrives. Whoever does it earliest gives you the most say over the result.
- Tell the crematory in writing you'd like a print, and request a picture of it ahead of the cremation.
- Ask how your pet is identified from collection to return, so the print and the ashes definitely belong together.
- Ask about fur clippings too; many providers can add a lock of fur to the print.
- Plan the finishing later. Jewelry or artwork can wait as long as it needs to; make that choice once you feel ready.
- If you'd like help, send us a few details and we'll reply by email with options.
Ways families in El Mirage keep a print close
El Mirage homes tend to have small yards, so most memorials here are indoor ones: an urn on a bookshelf, a paw-print frame in the hallway, a keepsake photo block for a child's room. For something outside, an engraved stone in a large pot fits in almost any yard and can be carried along if the family moves across town or out of state.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Peoria to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Peoria (roughly 5 miles from El Mirage) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How do Arizona attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Arizona human cremation rate at about 80.7%[5]. We show it on the El Mirage page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Is El Mirage big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 13,000 El Mirage households keep a dog or cat and around 1,100 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 35,820), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in El Mirage?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 105°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Why do so many owners miss the chance to take a print?
Because a print has a window. By our estimate, around 1,100 dogs and cats die in El Mirage each year, many of them suddenly or at an emergency clinic, when a clay kit is the last thing on anyone's mind. Taking a print while your pet is well, or asking for one when you book aftercare, is the simplest way not to miss it.
How many households in El Mirage have a dog or cat?
By our estimate, about 13,000 households in El Mirage have a dog or a cat, and around 1,100 dogs and cats are lost there each year. We calculate this from the city's population, average household size and national pet ownership and lifespan figures. The method is shown on this page.
