Duarte, California
Arranging a paw print around Duarte
Hot, dry summers and fall Santa Ana winds are rough on anything left outside in Duarte, fading paint, splitting wood and coating surfaces in grit. Stone and bronze last longest. For a living memorial, pick a drought-tolerant native such as a toyon or a small oak, and plant it in November so the winter rain can do the early watering.
With the San Gabriel Mountains as a backdrop, some Duarte families want a memorial that reflects the landscape: a river cobble lettered with a name, a bed of native sage or an urn in warm, earthy clay. Others prefer jewelry or a painted portrait of the animal. If siblings or grandparents each want some, ask for separate keepsake portions before anything is sealed.
One advantage of a town like Duarte is that people know each other. Your vet team has probably met your pet many times and will understand why a print matters. Small practices often keep a clay kit on the shelf for exactly this. If they don't, ask whether you can bring your own and take the print together in a quiet room.
About 22,866 people live in Duarte, which makes it the 251st-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Duarte are based about 19 miles away in Los Angeles, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Monrovia (2 miles), Azusa (3 miles, a larger centre) and Arcadia (5 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
8,400
How many dog- or cat-owning households Duarte has (estimate)
How we calculated this
22,866 ÷ 2.5 = 9,146 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 8,400. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
700
Estimated dog and cat losses in Duarte each year
How we calculated this
8,400 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 700 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]

What local funeral habits mean for a print
Cremation accounts for about 70.5%[5] of human deaths in California, so many households already have a shelf or cabinet where family ashes and photos sit. A pet's print tends to join that shelf. That's worth knowing before you choose a format: a clay disc needs a small stand, an ink print suits a frame the same size as your photos, and a print engraved straight onto the urn saves space altogether.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the California figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Duarte tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
When the weather works against clay and ink
If you're planning a home goodbye in July, August and September, consider booking the vet for early morning. Your pet will be more comfortable before the heat builds, the house is cooler for taking a print, and collection can happen before the afternoon peak. Take the print first, while the morning is still quiet. If you'd hoped to say goodbye outside, a shaded corner of the yard at dawn is kinder than the afternoon sun.
Ink behaves differently in the Duarte heat. Pet-safe ink pads dry out quickly in warm rooms, which gives a patchy print, and a warm, damp paw can slide and smudge. Take ink prints in the coolest room of the house, with the air conditioning on, and dry the paw with a towel first. Press straight down, lift straight up and take three or four prints so you can keep the clearest.

Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing
The print itself is cheap; what you turn it into is where the budget goes. At one urn retailer, an engraved paw print added to an urn typically costs $20–$35[6] and paw and nose print pendants start from $99.95[7]; a custom sterling silver charm made from your pet's actual print costs about $143 before the chain[8]. Custom silver print charms from one crematory network run $290 to $420[9].

What California allows after your pet dies
Rules in California mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.

A short checklist for a clean print
- Mention the print when you book rather than waiting until the appointment itself, whether that's the euthanasia or the cremation. Ask the team to note it on the aftercare form.
- Ask what kind they take: a clay disc, an ink print or both. If you might want jewelry later, ask for an ink or inkless print as well.
- Ask for two copies if more than one person in the family would like one.
- Ask to see or photograph the print while your pet is still at the clinic; a smudged one can then be done again.
- Check how it comes back: in your hands the same day, or alongside the ashes later, and what name goes on it.
- Keep the paperwork so that, once everything is returned, the invoice, ashes and print can be tied together.
Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up
Duarte's homes, from postwar bungalows to hillside houses, usually come with modest yards and living rooms. A compact urn over the fireplace, a carved marker beneath a citrus tree or a ring holding a trace of ashes each fit easily. Renters may prefer something that packs into a moving box. Consider the one spot where you will pass the memorial most often.

Questions people ask
How do California attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the California human cremation rate at about 70.5%[5]. We show it on the Duarte page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Roughly how many pets die in Duarte each year?
Our estimate is around 700. It comes from Duarte's population (about 22,866), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 8,400 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Duarte?
Usually yes. Monrovia is about 2 miles away, Azusa is about 3 miles away and Arcadia is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve Duarte actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Los Angeles, about 19 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Duarte and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Will my vet or crematory take a paw print before cremation?
Most will if asked, and many include a clay or ink print in the package. But requests can be missed on a busy day, especially at emergency clinics. Mention it when you book, ask for it to be written on the aftercare form and ask whether it comes back to you that day or with the ashes. Once your pet has been cremated, the chance is gone.
Will the crematory send the paw print back with the ashes?
It depends on the provider. Some take the print at intake and return it with the ashes; others hand it to your vet or post it separately. Ask how the print is labeled and when it will come back, and ask for a photo of it before cremation so you know it's clear. If you'd rather not wait, take your own before collection.
