Dublin, California
Who takes paw prints in Dublin
Many Dublin families have roots in India, China, Korea and elsewhere in Asia, and customs for remembering loved ones vary widely. A pet's memorial might sit near family photos, fresh flowers or a small prayer space, or be marked on a particular day each year. Whatever practice feels right in your household is the right one, and there is no need to explain it.
Dublin's newer homes often have compact yards and side gardens, so outdoor memorials here tend to be small: a flat stone set into a planter, a potted lemon tree, a plaque by the front door. In a condo or apartment, a bookshelf or a corner of a desk may be the right home. Measuring the space first makes it easier to choose something that fits.
There may be no ceramic studio or engraver in Dublin, but that matters less than it used to. Most jewelry, engraving and print-art makers work from a photo or scan of the print, sent by email, and post the finished piece back. Photograph your print flat in daylight, keep the original safe at home and shop around online without sending anything irreplaceable.
With roughly 71,602 residents, Dublin is the 116th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Fremont, roughly 11 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Dublin run from there.
If you want to compare providers, look at Pleasanton (4 miles), San Ramon (6 miles) and Hayward (8 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
26,500
Dublin: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
71,602 ÷ 2.5 = 28,641 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 26,500. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
2,200
Dublin families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
26,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,200 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Cremation habits in California and the print window
Cremation is the norm for people in California (about 70.5%[5] of deaths), and pet crematories there tend to offer a long menu of extras: paw prints, nose prints, fur clippings, name plates, photo urns. It's easy to feel you ought to say yes to everything. You don't have to. Pick the one or two things you'll actually look at in five years' time. For many families, that's a clear print and a small lock of fur.
That California rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Dublin only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Getting a clean print in Dublin in any season
If your pet dies at home during July, August and September, keeping them cool comes first and the print second. Move them to the coolest room, lay them on a towel over a hard floor and take the print within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. If collection is coming soon, ask the team to wait while you finish, or ask the crematory to take the print at intake.
Strong sun in Dublin, especially around July, fades ink faster than most people expect. A framed paw print in a bright hallway can lose its crispness within a few summers. Hang it on a wall that doesn't catch direct light, choose UV-filtering glass and keep a scan of the original. And never leave a clay print or a resin cast inside a parked car, a garage or an attic in summer, where temperatures climb far above 89°F.

What owners in Dublin typically pay for a print
Some providers include the print in the package. A Virginia crematory, for example, includes a paw print and a fur clipping with every private cremation package, which run $189–$300[6]. Others charge separately: a Northeast crematory network lists $49 for ink paw prints, $76 for a clay or silver-clay print and $111 framed[7]. When you compare quotes in Dublin, check which approach each provider takes.

Rules in California that touch on keepsakes
Rules in California mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.
The official California local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Dublin.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the California level first; our California rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Dublin or your HOA adds anything.
How to make sure a print is taken in time
- Take a breath. If your pet has just died at home, there is usually time for a print in the first few hours. Lay them on a towel in a cool room.
- Gather what you need: clay warmed in your hands, or card taped to a board with a pet-safe ink pad, plus a damp cloth.
- If the leg has stiffened, bring the clay to the paw. Press it gently onto the pads rather than forcing the paw down.
- Take a nose print too should you want one; barely touch the nose with the ink pad or an inkless wipe.
- Call your vet or crematory once you're done, and mention that you've already taken a print so they don't need to.
- Let the print dry indoors, out of direct sun and well clear of radiators, before framing it or mailing it.
Turning a print into something lasting
Families who expect to move again often choose memorials that travel easily: a compact vessel, a pendant, a clay paw impression or a photo book. Dividing ashes among several small containers also helps when grandparents or siblings live in another state or country. Ask for sealed containers, and keep a simple note of what they hold if they will travel by air.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Fremont to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Fremont (roughly 11 miles from Dublin) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How do California attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the California human cremation rate at about 70.5%[5]. We show it on the Dublin page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How many pet owners live in Dublin?
By our estimate, about 26,500 households in Dublin have at least one dog or cat, and around 2,200 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 71,602, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Dublin?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 89°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
How do I stop an ink paw print from smudging?
Dry the paw with a towel first, tape the card to a hard surface and press straight down with steady pressure, then lift straight up without sliding. Too much ink blurs the pads, so dab lightly. Take three or four prints and keep the clearest. Let the ink dry fully before touching it, especially in humid weather.
Can I get a hoof print from my horse?
Yes. Most owners take one after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the hoof: pick out the sole, dry it and press it into a thick slab of clay on a board, or paint it with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Someone should hold the foot steady. Many owners also keep the last shoe and a length of tail hair.
