Getting your pet's paw print in Los Altos Hills

Los Altos Hills, California

Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Los Altos Hills

Hot, dry summers and deer are the two things to plan around for an outdoor memorial in Los Altos Hills. Stone, bronze and weathering steel handle the sun; resin and painted wood crack. Deer browse many young plants, so if you are planting in memory, choose natives they tend to ignore or protect the sapling for its first few years, and get it in the ground in the rainy season.

Some families in Los Altos Hills divide ashes between the garden and keepsakes for children who live elsewhere: a small scattering or burial on the property, a pendant, a glass paperweight. Ask the crematory to return the remains with a written weight and in a lined bag, so a jeweler or glass artist can take a measured amount without disturbing the rest.

Home burial on your own land is still common in and around Los Altos Hills, where local rules allow it. If that's your plan, you have more time and privacy than a city owner waiting for a collection van. Take the print at home before you wrap your pet: a calm half hour on the porch or the kitchen floor, with clay warmed in your hands.

Los Altos Hills's population is around 8,419, the 292nd-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Los Altos Hills are based about 14 miles away in San Jose, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

Los Altos Hills sits within easy reach of Los Altos (1 miles, a larger centre), Mountain View (3 miles, a larger centre) and Palo Alto (4 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Los Altos Hills; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Our estimate

3,100

How many dog- or cat-owning households Los Altos Hills has (estimate)

How we calculated this

8,419 ÷ 2.5 = 3,368 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 3,100. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

260

dog and cat deaths per year in Los Altos Hills, our estimate

How we calculated this

3,100 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 260 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep

Because roughly 70.5%[5] of people in California are cremated, ashes jewelry and keepsake urns are familiar here. A paw print pairs naturally with them: an urn engraved with your pet's actual paw, or a pendant with the print on the front and a pinch of ashes inside. If that appeals, ask for a clear flat print that a maker can work from.

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the California figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Los Altos Hills tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

When the weather works against clay and ink

Mild days in Los Altos Hills make an old-fashioned sand cast possible. Press your pet's paw into a tray of damp, fine sand, pour in a thin mix of plaster and lift it out once it has set: you get a rough, textured paw that looks like a fossil. It's messier than clay, so work outdoors, but many families love the result. Avoid December, when damp air slows the plaster.

In a mild place like Los Altos Hills, you can take a print outdoors on a calm day, on the porch or in the garden where your pet is most relaxed. Just bring it inside to dry. Rain, dew and bird-bath splashes will soften clay, and even a light breeze will lift a sheet of card. Tape the card to a board and weigh down the corners.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Los Altos Hills

Engraving is the add-on that surprises people. By our estimate, name-and-dates engraving adds about 36%[6] to the price of a mid-priced wooden urn, and a paw print costs extra again. Before you pay for either in Los Altos Hills, check your pet insurance: some wellness add-ons reimburse end-of-life costs, and one plan's add-on could pay up to $650 toward cremation, burial and keepsakes[7]. Read the policy wording, then ask for an itemized quote.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for California: California costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What California allows after your pet dies

Rules in California mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.

California keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Los Altos Hills.

The California page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Los Altos Hills's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. If your pet dies unexpectedly at the clinic, ask for a few minutes alone with them before you go. Staff will almost always allow this, and many can fetch a print kit for you there and then.
  2. Say exactly what you want: ink, clay, a nose print, or every one of them, plus the number of copies.
  3. If you can't face doing it yourself, ask a nurse or technician to take it while you wait outside, and to show it to you before you go.
  4. Get the crematory's name and your pet's reference number from the front desk, written down.
  5. If no print was taken, phone the crematory as early as you can the next day and request one at check-in.
  6. Leave the urn and the other extras for later. Of everything on offer, only the print has to be settled now.

Keeping the print and the memory close

With an acre or more around most homes, Los Altos Hills families have room for memorials that grow with the land: a native oak or buckeye planted over a biodegradable urn, a carved boulder by the pathway gate, a bench facing the valley. Indoors, a hand-turned urn or ceramic vessel fits a study or library. There is no need to decide quickly; cremated remains are stable and can wait.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to San Jose to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in San Jose (roughly 14 miles from Los Altos Hills) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Why does the Los Altos Hills page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[5] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Does the Los Altos Hills climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In September, with highs near 75°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

How many pet owners live in Los Altos Hills?

By our estimate, about 3,100 households in Los Altos Hills have at least one dog or cat, and around 260 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 8,419, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.

Why take a paw print in Los Altos Hills if I already have plenty of photos?

Photos show what your pet looked like; a print records something you touched every day, at actual size. We estimate Los Altos Hills has around 3,100 dog- or cat-owning homes and loses about 260 of those pets a year. Most of those owners have hundreds of photos. The difference is that photos can be found later, while a print only exists if someone makes it before the body is cremated or buried, which is why it's worth doing first.

How do I get a clear print from very furry paws?

Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors, leaving the fur around the edge, which gives the print its outline. For cats, long-haired dogs and rabbits, an inkless kit or soft clay often works better than ink. Rabbits have no pads at all, so clay shows the long shape of the hind foot beautifully.
