A paw print to keep, in Ontario

Ontario, California

How owners in Ontario get a paw print

The San Gabriel Mountains line the northern horizon on clear days, and Mount Baldy often carries snow in winter, which makes the foothills a place many local families think of for a quiet farewell. If you'd like to scatter some ashes in the mountains or a regional park, check the rules for that particular land first, since public agencies set their own. Keeping a portion back for an urn or keepsake gives you both.

With so many Ontario homes built in the last two decades, families often want a memorial that moves with them rather than a spot in the yard they may leave. Urns, small keepsake containers, jewelry holding a pinch of ashes and indoor photo frames all travel easily. If you rent, a portable keepsake avoids any question about burying remains on property that isn't yours.

Home goodbyes are increasingly common in Ontario. If you're booking an in-home vet, ask whether they bring a clay kit and whether they'll take two prints, one for each person in the family. Taking your own print the day before, when your pet is calm and comfortable on their own bed, is another option and often gives a cleaner result.

About 187,013 people live in Ontario, which makes it the 24th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Fontana, roughly 12 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Ontario run from there.

The closest communities we cover are Montclair (3 miles), Upland (4 miles) and Rancho Cucamonga (4 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Ontario too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Our estimate

69,000

How many dog- or cat-owning households Ontario has (estimate)

How we calculated this

187,013 ÷ 2.5 = 74,805 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 69,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

5,750

dog and cat deaths per year in Ontario, our estimate

How we calculated this

69,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 5,750 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in California

In California, about 70.5%[5] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, pet crematories are well established and a paw print is often a standard line on the price list. The catch is that standard can mean automatic. Ask what kind of print they take, whether you can see it before cremation and whether you can have a second copy.

For the California figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Ontario rather than as pet data.

Weather in Ontario and your pet's print

Whatever the season in Ontario, take prints indoors in a comfortable room, not in direct sun or a cold garage. Dry the paw with a towel before using ink so it doesn't smudge, and tape the card down. Let clay dry on a rack at room temperature for two or three days, then seal it before framing or posting it anywhere.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes

The print itself is cheap; what you turn it into is where the budget goes. At one urn retailer, an engraved paw print added to an urn typically costs $20–$35[6] and paw and nose print pendants start from $99.95[7]; a custom sterling silver charm made from your pet's actual print costs about $143 before the chain[8]. Custom silver print charms from one crematory network run $290 to $420[9].

The California price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

What California allows after your pet dies

If you might move away from California one day, it helps to know that a print, a cast or a photograph needs no paperwork at a border, while ashes sometimes do, and a grave can't come with you at all. None of that should decide your plans, but it's worth weighing alongside what California allows, set out below.

California keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Ontario.

For California's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the California guide. Local rules in Ontario can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.

In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake

  1. If your pet is still with you, don't wait. Take a print on a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, when your pet is relaxed. A print from a living pet is usually the clearest.
  2. Choose your method. Clay if you want something to hold; ink or an inkless sheet if jewelry or engraving might come later. The kit chooser can settle it.
  3. Trim the tufts between the pads using round-ended scissors, so the paw rather than the hair leaves the impression.
  4. Hold the leg, not the paw, push down evenly in one motion, and raise it again without sliding. Make a few attempts and choose the sharpest one.
  5. Dry clay slowly indoors over two to three days, flipping it now and then, and finish with a coat of matte acrylic sealer.
  6. Photograph or scan the print flat in daylight. Most makers only need the image, so the original never leaves home.

Remembering your pet through their print

Hard, dry ground and summer heat make outdoor memorials in Ontario a practical question. A memorial stone or engraved marker stands up to sun far better than wood, and a biodegradable urn planted with a drought-tolerant tree can suit a garden better than a thirsty shrub. If you plan to move, a small stone you can take with you is a sensible alternative to planting.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Fontana to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Fontana (roughly 12 miles from Ontario) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Ontario?

The closest communities we cover are Montclair (about 3 miles), Upland (about 4 miles) and Rancho Cucamonga (about 4 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Ontario too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Is cremation common in California?

For people, yes: about 70.5%[5] of California deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Ontario follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Is Ontario big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 69,000 Ontario households keep a dog or cat and around 5,750 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 187,013), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

Why do so many owners miss the chance to take a print?

Because a print has a window. By our estimate, around 5,750 dogs and cats die in Ontario each year, many of them suddenly or at an emergency clinic, when a clay kit is the last thing on anyone's mind. Taking a print while your pet is well, or asking for one when you book aftercare, is the simplest way not to miss it.

Can I get my dog's nose print?

Yes. Dab a small amount of pet-safe ink onto the nose with a soft sponge, or use an inkless wipe, then press a folded card gently against the nose from the front. It usually takes a few tries. The ridges on a dog's nose make a striking engraving on a pendant or an urn, and many providers take a nose print alongside the paw.
