A paw print to keep, in Scotts Valley

Scotts Valley, California

Who takes paw prints in Scotts Valley

Scotts Valley sits between the beach and the forest, and memorials here often borrow from both: a pendant with a speck of ash sealed inside, an urn in redwood-toned wood, a small jar of sand from a favorite beach set beside a photo. Some families divide ashes so each household member can choose. A sealed inner liner from the crematory makes it easy to separate portions later without mess.

Wet winters and dry summers in the Santa Cruz foothills are tough on outdoor keepsakes. Stone and bronze weather well, while wood and printed ceramics are safer kept indoors. Moss and fallen needles can hide a flat marker within months, so an upright stone or one set slightly above ground stays readable with less clearing. A bench or boulder near the house can be easier to tend than a plaque at the edge of the woods.

There may be no ceramic studio or engraver in Scotts Valley, but that matters less than it used to. Most jewelry, engraving and print-art makers work from a photo or scan of the print, sent by email, and post the finished piece back. Photograph your print flat in daylight, keep the original safe at home and shop around online without sending anything irreplaceable.

About 11,652 people live in Scotts Valley, which makes it the 282nd-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. San Jose, roughly 21 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Scotts Valley run from there.

If you want to compare providers, look at Santa Cruz (5 miles, a larger centre), Capitola (6 miles) and Aptos (8 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

Our estimate

4,300

How many dog- or cat-owning households Scotts Valley has (estimate)

How we calculated this

11,652 ÷ 2.5 = 4,661 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 4,300. A household with several pets counts once.

Our estimate

360

Estimated dog and cat losses in Scotts Valley each year

How we calculated this

4,300 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 360 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

A pet at home in Scotts Valley

Local customs and the keepsake you keep

In California, about 70.5%[5] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, pet crematories are well established and a paw print is often a standard line on the price list. The catch is that standard can mean automatic. Ask what kind of print they take, whether you can see it before cremation and whether you can have a second copy.

The California percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Scotts Valley, not as a count of pets.

When the weather works against clay and ink

In a mild place like Scotts Valley, you can take a print outdoors on a calm day, on the porch or in the garden where your pet is most relaxed. Just bring it inside to dry. Rain, dew and bird-bath splashes will soften clay, and even a light breeze will lift a sheet of card. Tape the card to a board and weigh down the corners.

Humidity in Scotts Valley can still catch you out, even in a mild year. Air-dry clay that feels firm on top may be soft underneath, and sealing it too soon can trap moisture and leave a dull, cloudy finish. Turn the print daily, wait until it's pale and light all through, then seal it with a matte acrylic sealer before framing.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes

Engraving is the add-on that surprises people. By our estimate, name-and-dates engraving adds about 36%[6] to the price of a mid-priced wooden urn, and a paw print costs extra again. Before you pay for either in Scotts Valley, check your pet insurance: some wellness add-ons reimburse end-of-life costs, and one plan's add-on could pay up to $650 toward cremation, burial and keepsakes[7]. Read the policy wording, then ask for an itemized quote.

Rules in California that touch on keepsakes

Rules in California mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.

To find your county or city office in California, start with the official California local government directory.

For California's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the California guide. Local rules in Scotts Valley can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.

In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake

  1. For a horse, have the farrier out beforehand to trim the hoof and tidy it up. Clean the sole thoroughly and let it dry.
  2. Press the hoof into a thick slab of clay laid on a board, or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Have someone hold the foot steady.
  3. Keep the last shoe and a length of tail or mane hair, which many horse owners have braided or set into resin.
  4. For a bird or a very small pet, choose the softest clay or an inkless sheet, and barely press at all. Clay picks up tiny toes best.
  5. For a fluffy cat or rabbit, go inkless so nothing ends up on fur they'll wash later; for rabbits especially, clay captures the long, narrow foot well.
  6. Dry and store every print indoors, and photograph it so a maker can work from the image.

Turning a print into something lasting

Scotts Valley gardens are often shaded by redwoods and oaks, with acidic, needle-covered soil. A memorial planting that suits these conditions, such as ferns, huckleberry or a shade-tolerant native, will thrive where a sun-loving rose would struggle. If you are placing an urn or marker outside, pick a spot that is easy to see from the house but out of the path of winter runoff.

Questions people ask

Is Scotts Valley big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 4,300 Scotts Valley households keep a dog or cat and around 360 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 11,652), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

Will I have to travel to San Jose to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in San Jose (roughly 21 miles from Scotts Valley) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Scotts Valley?

Usually yes. Santa Cruz is about 5 miles away, Capitola is about 6 miles away and Aptos is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Why does the Scotts Valley page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[5] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

How do I stop an ink paw print from smudging?

Dry the paw with a towel first, tape the card to a hard surface and press straight down with steady pressure, then lift straight up without sliding. Too much ink blurs the pads, so dab lightly. Take three or four prints and keep the clearest. Let the ink dry fully before touching it, especially in humid weather.

Can my pet's paw print be turned into a tattoo?

Yes, and it's a popular choice. A tattoo artist will want a clear, high-contrast flat print, so an ink or inkless print works better than clay. Scan it at a high resolution and bring the file to your consultation. Many people have the print tattooed at actual size, sometimes with the pet's name or a nose print alongside.
