Paw and nose prints in Star: a calm guide

Star, Idaho

Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Star

Star's newer homes often have open backyards with room for something permanent: a boulder with an engraved name, a small bench, or a stone set among drought-tolerant plants. If you might sell in a few years, choose something movable. Inside, a simple urn or a shadow box with a collar, a photo and a tag is a lasting way to keep your animal close.

About seven in ten Idaho funerals now involve cremation, so ashes at home are a familiar idea here. Some families scatter a portion along the Boise River or up in the hills beyond the highway; ask the land manager or owner about the exact spot first. A little can be kept in jewelry or a small container so that not everything is released at once.

Farm and country homes around Star often have animals that city guides forget. A horse's hoof print is best taken after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the foot, pressed into a thick clay slab or painted onto heavy card. Keep the last shoe as well. For chickens, ducks or a pet parrot, very soft clay shows the delicate toes far better than ink.

Star's population is around 20,874, the 13th-largest of the 13 Idaho communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Boise, about 16 miles (25 km) away, which is where some providers serving Star are based.

For a second opinion on price, Eagle (4 miles), Meridian (8 miles, a larger centre) and Caldwell (9 miles, a larger centre) are close enough that their providers cover Star routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Our estimate

7,700

How many dog- or cat-owning households Star has (estimate)

How we calculated this

20,874 ÷ 2.5 = 8,350 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 7,700. Multi-pet homes count once.

Our estimate

640

Estimated dog and cat losses in Star each year

How we calculated this

7,700 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 640 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

A pet at home in Star

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first

When roughly 71.2%[5] of human funerals in Idaho end in cremation, the whole system is built for speed, and pet aftercare often runs the same way. Collection can be booked for the same afternoon, and some crematories cremate within a day or two. That efficiency is a kindness, but it also shrinks the time in which a print can be taken. Ask how soon cremation will happen, and if it's quick, take the print yourself before collection.

The Idaho figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Seasons in Star and a print that lasts

In the hot months, take prints in a cool, air-conditioned room and dry the paw first so ink doesn't smudge. In January, when lows average about 23°F, warm the clay in your hands and keep plaster work indoors. A pet who has been in cold storage will have firm pads, so press the clay gently onto the paw instead of the other way round.

Home burial in Star runs to two different clocks. In January, February, March, November and December, frozen ground can make digging impossible, and some families keep their pet in a vet's cold storage until spring. In the heat of July, burial needs to happen quickly. Either way, the print belongs at the very start: before your pet goes into storage in winter, and within the first hours in summer.

What owners in Star typically pay for a print

Compared with the cremation itself, a print is a small line on the bill. Private dog cremation averages about $260[6] in the US, while paw-print add-ons at crematories range from about $10 to $76[7]. The bigger spend comes later, if you choose jewelry: a paw-print bangle bracelet from one crematory network costs $385[8]. Use the table to plan what fits your budget in Star.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Idaho: Idaho costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Rules in Idaho that touch on keepsakes

There are no rules about taking a paw print; it's yours to do at home, at the clinic or at the crematory. Where Idaho does have rules is what happens next: whether your pet can be buried at home and where ashes can be scattered. Those choices can affect your print too, for example if you want it set into a garden stone or a grave marker.

Not sure which office covers Star? The Idaho local government directory is the official list.

The Idaho page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Star's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

A short checklist for a clean print

  1. If your pet dies unexpectedly at the clinic, ask for a few minutes before you leave the room. Most teams will give you time and can bring a print kit to you.
  2. Say exactly what you want: ink, clay, a nose print, or every one of them, plus the number of copies.
  3. If you can't face doing it yourself, ask a nurse or technician to take it while you wait outside, and to show it to you before you go.
  4. Get the crematory's name and your pet's reference number from the front desk, written down.
  5. If no print was taken, phone the crematory as early as you can the next day and request one at check-in.
  6. Leave the urn and the other extras for later. Of everything on offer, only the print has to be settled now.

Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up

Relatives in Star often live elsewhere in the valley or farther across the West. If more than one person wants to keep something, ask about splitting ashes into several small containers, or ordering duplicate paw or hoof prints. Tree urns are another choice, though the valley's hot summers mean a young tree will need regular deep watering for its first few years.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Boise to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Boise (roughly 16 miles from Star) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Does the Star climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 92°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Is Star big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 7,700 Star households keep a dog or cat and around 640 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 20,874), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Star?

Usually yes. Eagle is about 4 miles away, Meridian is about 8 miles away and Caldwell is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

How many households in Star have a dog or cat?

By our estimate, about 7,700 households in Star have a dog or a cat, and around 640 dogs and cats are lost there each year. We calculate this from the city's population, average household size and national pet ownership and lifespan figures. The method is shown on this page.

My pet has been in cold storage. Can I still get a print?

Usually, yes. A pet kept in a clinic cooler or a cold room will have firm pads and stiff legs, so the trick is to warm the clay well and press it gently onto the paw instead of pressing the paw into the clay. Ink works too, with a light touch. If you can, ask for the print before your pet goes into cold storage.
