Round Lake, Illinois
How owners in Round Lake get a paw print
Round Lake homes often have decks or back patios facing a pond or open ground, so memorials here lean outdoors: a garden stone by the steps, a spring-planted shrub, or a hanging planter with a small plaque. Inside, an urn on a sideboard works just as well. Ashes come back sealed, so there's no pressure to choose anything before you're ready.
Northern Lake County gets some of the coldest nights in the Chicago area, and the ground can stay frozen well into March, so any stone you order in winter will likely wait for spring before it can be set. Use that time to choose granite or bronze over resin or concrete, which crack in this climate, and plan a gravel base so frost heave doesn't tilt the marker.
Dogs in and around a town like Round Lake often work for a living: herding, hunting, guarding stock or riding in a truck all day. Their pads are thicker and more callused than a house dog's, with nicks and old scars that are part of their story. Those details show beautifully in clay. Use a firmer clay, roll it a little thicker and hold steady pressure for a few seconds so the ridges come through.
About 18,526 people live in Round Lake, which makes it the 135th-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Chicago, about 40 miles (65 km) away, which is where some providers serving Round Lake are based.
Our pages for Round Lake Beach (3 miles), Grayslake (4 miles) and Mundelein (7 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Round Lake as well.
Our estimate
6,800
How many dog- or cat-owning households Round Lake has (estimate)
How we calculated this
18,526 ÷ 2.5 = 7,410 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 6,800. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
570
Estimated dog and cat losses in Round Lake each year
How we calculated this
6,800 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 570 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

What local funeral habits mean for a print
About 60.2%[5] of people who die in Illinois are cremated. With both burial and cremation common, you'll find pet cemeteries that set a print into a headstone and crematories that return one with the ashes. The print itself is the same either way. What changes is who takes it, so decide that early.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Illinois figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Round Lake tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Getting a clean print in Round Lake in any season
If you're planning a garden stone with your pet's print pressed into it, the Round Lake winter will decide your timing. Concrete and mortar need temperatures above freezing to cure properly, so take the print now in clay or ink and keep it indoors. In spring, once the ground has thawed, you or a local stonemason can use it to make the outdoor memorial.
Snow and ice in January, February, March and December can hold up home-visit vets and collection vans around Round Lake, sometimes by a day. If your pet dies during a storm or a cold snap, you may be caring for them longer than you expected. Keep them in the chilliest room of the house, away from heating, on a towel or blanket. Take the print early in that time, while the paws are still soft enough to press cleanly.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Round Lake
Compared with the cremation itself, a print is a small line on the bill. Private dog cremation averages about $260[6] in the US, while paw-print add-ons at crematories range from about $10 to $76[7]. The bigger spend comes later, if you choose jewelry: a paw-print bangle bracelet from one crematory network costs $385[8]. Use the table to plan what fits your budget in Round Lake.

Burial, scattering and prints in Illinois
Rules in Illinois mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.
To find your county or city office in Illinois, start with the official Illinois local government directory.
The Illinois page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Round Lake's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Getting a paw print in Round Lake, step by step
- Decide who will take the print: you, your vet, or the crematory when your pet arrives. Whoever does it earliest gives you the most say over the result.
- Tell the crematory in writing that you want a print, and ask for a photo of it before cremation.
- Ask how your pet is identified from collection to return, so the print and the ashes definitely belong together.
- Ask about fur clippings at the same time; many providers offer one with the print.
- Plan the finishing later. Jewelry or artwork can wait as long as it needs to; make that choice once you feel ready.
- If you'd like help, send us a few details and we'll reply by email with options.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
Lakes invite a different kind of memorial. Some Round Lake families place a small portion of ashes in a biodegradable urn designed to dissolve in water, where rules allow, or keep a lake stone engraved with a name beside the urn at home. Others choose a pendant or ring with a trace of ash. Ask about paw impressions before cremation takes place.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 40 miles from Round Lake) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Round Lake?
Usually yes. Round Lake Beach is about 3 miles away, Grayslake is about 4 miles away and Mundelein is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Round Lake climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Why does the Round Lake page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 60.2%[5] of Illinois residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
My pet has been in cold storage. Can I still get a print?
Usually, yes. A pet kept in a clinic cooler or a cold room will have firm pads and stiff legs, so the trick is to warm the clay well and press it gently onto the paw instead of pressing the paw into the clay. Ink works too, with a light touch. If you can, ask for the print before your pet goes into cold storage.
There's no engraver in Round Lake. How do I turn a print into jewelry?
Photograph or scan the print flat in daylight, with no shadow, and send the image to a maker who works by mail. Most engraving and jewelry is made from an image, not the original. Keep the clay or ink print at home. If a maker needs the physical print for casting, wrap it well and use tracked postage.
