Paw print keepsakes in Munster

Munster, Indiana

Arranging a paw print around Munster

Munster's older neighborhoods have mature oaks and maples and well-kept gardens, and some families choose a memorial that blends into that setting: a flat stone tucked beneath a tree, a memorial bench, or a bed of perennials that blooms each June. Indoors, a framed photo, a keepsake box or a shelf display fits any room. There's no hurry to settle on something.

Lake County winters punish outdoor memorials with snow loads, salt and dozens of freeze-thaw swings. Granite and bronze hold up; resin and painted concrete usually don't. Put a thin bed of gravel beneath the marker so frost can't tip it, and site it where the snow shovel won't reach. Under a tree canopy, a carved name stays crisp and easy to read.

Small-town clinics in Munster may close at weekends, so if your pet dies on a Saturday evening, you may be looking after them at home until Monday. A print can still be taken during that time. Keep your pet cool, lay them on a towel, and press the paw gently into warmed clay, or press the clay onto the paw if the leg has stiffened.

Munster is home to about 23,504 people, the 43rd-largest of the 50 Indiana communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Munster are based about 24 miles away in Chicago, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

For a second opinion on price, Highland (2 miles), Lansing (2 miles) and Calumet City (4 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Munster routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Our estimate

8,650

Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Munster

How we calculated this

23,504 ÷ 2.5 = 9,402 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 8,650. Multi-pet homes count once.

Our estimate

720

Munster families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)

How we calculated this

8,650 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 720 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

We built the this numbers from Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Cremation habits in Indiana and the print window

Around 56.5%[5] of people in Indiana are cremated, a middle-of-the-road rate that means local traditions vary from family to family. Some households want a grave to visit, others want ashes at home. A paw print works with both. It can sit on a shelf, be set into a garden stone above a grave or be engraved onto an urn.

That Indiana rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Munster only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Clay, ink and the local climate

With 4 months of freezing average lows, Munster winters are hard on posted parcels too. If you're sending a clay print away to be cast in metal or scanned for jewelry, wrap it well, avoid shipping over a weekend and send a photo or scan first where the maker accepts one. Then the original never has to leave your warm house at all.

Indoor heating in January, February, March and December makes the air in Munster homes very dry, which is its own problem for clay. A print left near a radiator, wood stove or forced-air vent can shrink unevenly and split along the thin toe edges. Dry it in a cooler room, away from heat sources, and lay a slightly damp cloth loosely over it for the first day to slow things down.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes

Compared with the cremation itself, a print is a small line on the bill. Private dog cremation averages about $260[6] in the US, while paw-print add-ons at crematories range from about $10 to $76[7]. The bigger spend comes later, if you choose jewelry: a paw-print bangle bracelet from one crematory network costs $385[8]. Use the table to plan what fits your budget in Munster.

The Indiana price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

What the law in Indiana does and doesn't cover

Rules in Indiana say a good deal about where a pet can be buried and very little about how a crematory keeps track of each animal. That's one more reason to take your own print: made before collection, it's a record you created yourself. Ask your provider how pets are tagged, and read the burial and scattering notes below for the rest.

Not sure which office covers Munster? The Indiana local government directory is the official list.

For Indiana's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Indiana guide. Local rules in Munster can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.

A short checklist for a clean print

  1. Skip the table. Take the clay or card to your pet instead, wherever they're comfortable, whether that's their bed or a patch of floor.
  2. Recruit a second person to stroke and reassure your pet while you work on the paw.
  3. Use a lick mat or a few treats so your pet stays focused ahead and doesn't keep turning around.
  4. Don't straighten a stiff leg. Work with the position it's in: slip a board beneath the paw and raise the clay to it.
  5. Stop after a few tries if your pet gets stressed. Try again tomorrow, or ask your vet to help at the next visit.
  6. Try an inkless kit for a pet who can't stand wet feet, since it leaves nothing behind to clean up.

Remembering your pet through their print

With relatives often living on both sides of the state line, many Munster families share a pet's memory: a small urn for a sister in Illinois, a pendant holding a bit of ash for a teenager, a framed paw impression that stays at home. Prints and fur can only be collected beforehand, which is why it's worth mentioning them the first time you talk with the provider.

Questions people ask

Does the Munster climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 85°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Why does the Munster page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 56.5%[5] of Indiana residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Is Munster big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 8,650 Munster households keep a dog or cat and around 720 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 23,504), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Munster?

Usually yes. Highland is about 2 miles away, Lansing is about 2 miles away and Calumet City is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Should I take a paw print while my senior pet is still alive?

If you can, yes. A relaxed living pet usually gives the clearest print, and you can take as many as you like without pressure. It can also give anticipatory grief something useful to do; in an RSPCA survey, 75.4%[10] of bereaved owners said they grieved before their pet died. Choose a calm, good day and keep the session short.

How do I get my pet's paw print in Munster?

You have three options. Take it yourself at home with clay or an ink kit, ideally while your pet is still well. Ask your vet or in-home euthanasia vet to take one at the appointment. Or ask the pet crematory to take one at intake, before cremation. Whichever you choose, ask for it in advance and check the print is clear before your pet leaves.
