Portage, Indiana
How owners in Portage get a paw print
Portage's ranch houses and newer homes often have a fireplace wall or built-in shelving that suits an urn, a clay paw impression or a name carved into a small stone. Take whatever time you need before committing to something permanent; the plain container from the crematory will do until then, and plenty of people hold off until the first anniversary before ordering a lasting piece.
Lake-effect snow and bitter January nights are tough on anything left outdoors, so choose granite or bronze for a memorial in the yard, and bed it on gravel so frost doesn't shift it. Some Portage families add a smooth beach stone or a small jar of dune sand to an indoor memorial, as a reminder of summer days spent near the lake.
One advantage of a town like Portage is that people know each other. Your vet team has probably met your pet many times and will understand why a print matters. Small practices often keep a clay kit on the shelf for exactly this. If they don't, ask whether you can bring your own and take the print together in a quiet room.
About 38,634 people live in Portage, which makes it the 24th-largest of the 50 Indiana communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Portage are based about 30 miles away in Chicago, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are Hobart (7 miles), Gary (9 miles) and Valparaiso (10 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Portage too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
14,000
Portage: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
38,634 ÷ 2.5 = 15,454 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 14,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
1,200
Portage families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
14,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,200 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first
Human funerals in Indiana split between cremation, at about 56.5%[5], and burial for most of the rest, so pet cemeteries and pet crematories both have a local following. If you're leaning toward a cemetery plot, ask what kind of marker they allow. Some accept an etched granite plaque, some a bronze plate cast from a clay print, and some only flat stones. The answer tells you whether you need a clay impression, a flat ink print or both.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Indiana figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Portage tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Getting a clean print in Portage in any season
Plaster and cold don't mix well. Plaster sets more slowly in a cold room, and if the water in it freezes before it cures, the cast turns chalky and crumbles. In January, February, March, November and December, mix plaster with lukewarm water, let it set somewhere warm indoors and never leave a curing cast in a car, porch or shed overnight. The same goes for air-dry clay.
Indoor heating in January, February, March, November and December makes the air in Portage homes very dry, which is its own problem for clay. A print left near a radiator, wood stove or forced-air vent can shrink unevenly and split along the thin toe edges. Dry it in a cooler room, away from heat sources, and lay a slightly damp cloth loosely over it for the first day to slow things down.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing
If you'd like the print framed with a lock of fur, one Northeast crematory network charges $133 for that combination and $23 for a fur clipping on its own[6]. Some water cremation providers bundle a print in too: an Arizona aquamation service includes an ink paw print in individual packages from $75 to $349[7]. In Portage, it's worth asking every provider what comes with the package before adding extras.

Landlords, parks and permits in Indiana
Nothing in Indiana restricts a paw print, a nose print or a lock of fur. What local rules do shape is where ashes may go, and some favorite places, such as parks, beaches and trails, need the landowner's permission. If that permission is hard to get, a print can carry the memory of the place instead: frame it beside a photo taken there, or have the trail's name engraved under the paw.
The official Indiana local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Portage.

A short checklist for a clean print
- Mention the print when you book the euthanasia appointment or cremation, not on the day. Ask for it to be written on the aftercare form.
- Ask what kind they take: a clay disc, an ink print or both. If you might want jewelry later, ask for an ink or inkless print as well.
- Ask for two copies if more than one person in the family would like one.
- Ask to see or photograph the print while your pet is still at the clinic; a smudged one can then be done again.
- Check how it comes back: with you that day, or with the ashes later, and how it's labeled.
- Keep the paperwork so that, once everything is returned, the invoice, ashes and print can be tied together.
Remembering your pet through their print
Portage families with relatives around the Region and in Chicago often divide the ashes into small shares: a tiny urn for a parent, a glass pendant for a son or daughter, a keepsake vial for a grandchild. Others plant a shrub near the patio in the pet's memory, choosing one that flowers around the pet's birthday. Ask about prices, sizes and turnaround times before ordering anything custom.

Questions people ask
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Portage?
January, February, March, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 83°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 30 miles from Portage) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is cremation common in Indiana?
For people, yes: about 56.5%[5] of Indiana deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Portage follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Portage?
Usually yes. Hobart is about 7 miles away, Gary is about 9 miles away and Valparaiso is about 10 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I make a plaster paw cast in cold weather?
Yes, but do it indoors. Plaster sets more slowly in a cold room, and if the water in it freezes before it has cured, the cast turns chalky and crumbles. Mix it with lukewarm water, let it set somewhere warm and never leave a curing cast in a car, garage or porch overnight during a Portage winter.
There's no engraver in Portage. How do I turn a print into jewelry?
Photograph or scan the print flat in daylight, with no shadow, and send the image to a maker who works by mail. Most engraving and jewelry is made from an image, not the original. Keep the clay or ink print at home. If a maker needs the physical print for casting, wrap it well and use tracked postage.
