Getting a paw print in Erlanger: the local picture
Erlanger homes tend to be compact, and many families prefer memorials that fit on a shelf or wall: a slim urn, a photo frame with space for ashes, a shadow box with a name tag. Ash jewelry is another way to keep a loved animal close without taking up room. There's no hurry, because the provider's box is a perfectly good place for the ashes until you decide.
On a small Erlanger lot, a garden marker works well tucked into a planting bed near the house, where it's protected from the mower and seen daily. Freeze-thaw cycles in Northern Kentucky winters crack cheap materials, so polished granite or cast bronze is worth the extra cost. A layer of gravel beneath keeps it from tipping as the soil moves.
Supplies are easy to find even in a small town. Air-dry modeling clay, a washable non-toxic ink pad, card stock and baby wipes are enough for a first print. A purpose-made kit is kinder for fluffy paws and cats, but it may take days to arrive, so buy one while your pet is still well rather than waiting until you need it urgently.
Erlanger is home to about 20,158 people, the 19th-largest of the 26 Kentucky communities we cover. Cincinnati, roughly 6 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Erlanger run from there.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Florence (4 miles), Covington (6 miles, a larger centre) and Independence (6 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
7,400
Erlanger: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
20,158 ÷ 2.5 = 8,063 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 7,400. Multi-pet homes count once.

dog and cat deaths per year in Erlanger, our estimate
How we calculated this
7,400 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 620 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first
Cremation is a minority choice for people in Kentucky, at about 44.0%[5], and the pet aftercare trade is smaller to match. A crematory an hour away may not list prints at all, and a vet clinic may never have been asked for one. Bring your own kit. A pack of air-dry clay plus a card and a pet-safe ink pad costs little, fits in a bag and means the print doesn't depend on anyone else's supply cupboard.
The Kentucky percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Erlanger, not as a count of pets.
Getting a clean print in Erlanger in any season
With 3 months of freezing average lows, Erlanger winters are hard on posted parcels too. If you're sending a clay print away to be cast in metal or scanned for jewelry, wrap it well, avoid shipping over a weekend and send a photo or scan first where the maker accepts one. Then the original never has to leave your warm house at all.
If you're planning a garden stone with your pet's print pressed into it, the Erlanger winter will decide your timing. Concrete and mortar need temperatures above freezing to cure properly, so take the print now in clay or ink and keep it indoors. In spring, once the ground has thawed, you or a local stonemason can use it to make the outdoor memorial.

Paw print costs around Erlanger, line by line
Engraving is the add-on that surprises people. By our estimate, name-and-dates engraving adds about 36%[6] to the price of a mid-priced wooden urn, and a paw print costs extra again. Before you pay for either in Erlanger, check your pet insurance: some wellness add-ons reimburse end-of-life costs, and one plan's add-on could pay up to $650 toward cremation, burial and keepsakes[7]. Read the policy wording, then ask for an itemized quote.

What the law in Kentucky does and doesn't cover
Paw prints sit outside most regulation, but the aftercare around them doesn't. Your local council or city, and the wider rules for Kentucky, may limit burying a pet at home and scattering ashes in public places. Check the notes below before you plan a garden memorial with your pet's print pressed into it.

A short checklist for a clean print
- If your pet is still with you, don't wait. Take a print on a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, when your pet is relaxed. A print from a living pet is usually the clearest.
- Choose your method. Clay for something to hold, ink or inkless paper for engraving and jewelry later. Our kit chooser helps you decide.
- Trim the tufts between the pads using round-ended scissors, so the paw rather than the hair leaves the impression.
- Hold the leg, not the paw, and press straight down with steady pressure, then lift straight up. Take several prints and keep the clearest.
- Dry clay slowly indoors for two or three days, turning it, then seal it with a matte acrylic sealer.
- Photograph or scan the print flat in daylight. Makers can work from that image, so the original stays at home.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
Families near Erlanger sometimes combine several small memorials rather than one large one: a paw print on the fridge, a keepsake urn for a child's room, a tree planted in a grandparent's yard farther out in the country. Sharing ashes this way suits relatives spread around the metro. Ask for prints and fur before cremation; everything else can be arranged later.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Kentucky?
For people, yes: about 44.0%[5] of Kentucky deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Erlanger follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Is Erlanger big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 7,400 Erlanger households keep a dog or cat and around 620 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 20,158), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Will I have to travel to Cincinnati to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Cincinnati (roughly 6 miles from Erlanger) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Erlanger?
Usually yes. Florence is about 4 miles away, Covington is about 6 miles away and Independence is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will my vet or crematory take a paw print before cremation?
Most will if asked, and many include a clay or ink print in the package. But requests can be missed on a busy day, especially at emergency clinics. Mention it when you book, ask for it to be written on the aftercare form and ask whether it comes back to you that day or with the ashes. Once your pet has been cremated, the chance is gone.
How do I get a clear print from very furry paws?
Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors, leaving the fur around the edge, which gives the print its outline. For cats, long-haired dogs and rabbits, an inkless kit or soft clay often works better than ink. Rabbits have no pads at all, so clay shows the long shape of the hind foot beautifully.
