Richmond, Kentucky
Getting a paw print in Richmond: the local picture
Madison County's muggy summers and icy snaps are tough on outdoor pieces, especially thin or hollow ones. Granite and bronze keep their shape; resin and softwood break down within a few years. Native redbuds and dogwoods make fitting memorial trees in Madison County, blooming each April, and do well planted in fall or very early spring, so their roots can settle before summer heat.
Richmond's older houses near campus often have porches, fireplaces and built-in shelves that suit an urn or keepsake box, while student rentals call for something that travels well: a compact urn, an inked paw on card or a slim necklace. Graduating students sometimes wait until they've settled in a new city before choosing anything permanent, and that's perfectly fine. The ashes will keep.
One advantage of a town like Richmond is that people know each other. Your vet team has probably met your pet many times and will understand why a print matters. Small practices often keep a clay kit on the shelf for exactly this. If they don't, ask whether you can bring your own and take the print together in a quiet room.
About 40,663 people live in Richmond, which makes it the 7th-largest of the 26 Kentucky communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Lexington, about 24 miles (39 km) away, which is where some providers serving Richmond are based.
Richmond sits within easy reach of Nicholasville (18 miles), Winchester (20 miles) and Lexington (24 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Richmond; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
15,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Richmond
How we calculated this
40,663 ÷ 2.5 = 16,265 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 15,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
1,250
Estimated dog and cat losses in Richmond each year
How we calculated this
15,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,250 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first
With about 44.0%[5] of people in Kentucky cremated, traditions here lean toward burial, and that often extends to pets. Whatever you choose, a print is the part you can do yourself, at home, with ordinary clay and a towel. It doesn't depend on local services, and it's the one keepsake that has to be made before anything else happens.
We take the Kentucky rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Richmond, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Clay, ink and the local climate
In warm weather, the first hours after a pet dies at home matter for comfort and for the print. Keep your pet in the coolest room, on a towel, and take the print early, before the body stiffens. In cold weather, a pet kept in a chilled room will have firm pads, so press the clay gently onto the paw instead.

Paw print costs around Richmond, line by line
If you'd like the print framed with a lock of fur, one Northeast crematory network charges $133 for that combination and $23 for a fur clipping on its own[6]. Some water cremation providers bundle a print in too: an Arizona aquamation service includes an ink paw print in individual packages from $75 to $349[7]. In Richmond, it's worth asking every provider what comes with the package before adding extras.

Landlords, parks and permits in Kentucky
Rules in Kentucky say a good deal about where a pet can be buried and very little about how a crematory keeps track of each animal. That's one more reason to take your own print: made before collection, it's a record you created yourself. Ask your provider how pets are tagged, and read the burial and scattering notes below for the rest.
Kentucky keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Richmond.
For Kentucky's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Kentucky guide. Local rules in Richmond can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
Getting a paw print in Richmond, step by step
- If your pet is still with you, don't wait. Pick a quiet, settled moment, perhaps once they've eaten or come back from a walk, and make the print then. Prints taken while a pet is alive tend to come out sharpest.
- Choose your method. Clay for something to hold, ink or inkless paper for engraving and jewelry later. Our kit chooser helps you decide.
- Trim the tufts between the pads using round-ended scissors, so the paw rather than the hair leaves the impression.
- Hold the leg, not the paw, and press straight down with steady pressure, then lift straight up. Take several prints and keep the clearest.
- Dry clay slowly indoors over two to three days, flipping it now and then, and finish with a coat of matte acrylic sealer.
- Photograph or scan the print flat in daylight. Most makers only need the image, so the original never leaves home.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
Some Richmond families like a memorial connected to the landscape, such as a rounded creek stone from the knobs carved with a name, or a photo taken on the bluffs above the Kentucky River. Others choose jewelry or mini urns for scattered relatives. Ask to see a proof and get the total cost, including engraving and shipping, in writing before ordering.

Questions people ask
Is Richmond big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 15,000 Richmond households keep a dog or cat and around 1,250 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 40,663), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Will I have to travel to Lexington to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Lexington (roughly 24 miles from Richmond) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Richmond?
Usually yes. Nicholasville is about 18 miles away, Winchester is about 20 miles away and Lexington is about 24 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Kentucky?
For people, yes: about 44.0%[5] of Kentucky deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Richmond follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How do I get a nose print from my cat?
Cats have small noses and dislike being fussed, so pick a sleepy moment. Use an inkless wipe or the lightest dab of pet-safe ink on a soft sponge, then touch a small folded card to the nose from the front and lift away. Expect a faint, partial print; that's normal. Take several attempts over a few days rather than persisting in one session, and wipe the nose clean afterwards so your cat doesn't lick the residue.
Can I get a print of my bird's feet?
Yes, with care. Birds are light and their toes are delicate, so use very soft clay and the gentlest pressure, or an inkless kit with treated paper. Ink is best avoided because birds preen and may swallow it. An avian vet can help if your bird is nervous. The result is a lovely, delicate impression of the toes and scales.
