Slidell, Louisiana
Who takes paw prints in Slidell
Some Slidell families release part of the ashes on the lake or along a favorite bayou and bring the rest back to the house. If you plan to do that from a boat, choose a calm day and scatter downwind. Keepsake urns, paw prints in clay and framed photos let relatives who live across the lake in New Orleans keep a piece as well.
Slidell homeowners often live close to water, and many prefer memorials that can move if a storm forces an evacuation. A bookshelf urn, a small keepsake box, or a sealed pendant with a few grams of ash can go with you in a go-bag. Outdoor stones work too, but set them on higher ground rather than near a canal bank.
There may be no ceramic studio or engraver in Slidell, but that matters less than it used to. Most jewelry, engraving and print-art makers work from a photo or scan of the print, sent by email, and post the finished piece back. Photograph your print flat in daylight, keep the original safe at home and shop around online without sending anything irreplaceable.
Slidell is home to about 28,341 people, the 12th-largest of the 17 Louisiana communities we cover. New Orleans, roughly 29 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Slidell run from there.
Slidell sits within easy reach of New Orleans (29 miles, a larger centre), Kenner (34 miles, a larger centre) and Gulfport (42 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Slidell; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
10,500
Slidell: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
28,341 ÷ 2.5 = 11,336 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 10,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
870
Slidell families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
10,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 870 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first
Burial is still the familiar path in Louisiana; cremation covers only about 46.4%[5] of the dead there, and some owners worry that making a keepsake of a pet's paw will seem odd to the neighbors. It isn't odd at all. A print is a quiet, gentle memorial, not unlike keeping a curl from a baby's first haircut. Make it for yourself, and share it only if and when you want to.
The Louisiana percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Slidell, not as a count of pets.
When the weather works against clay and ink
If you're planning a home goodbye in June, July, August and September, consider booking the vet for early morning. Your pet will be more comfortable before the heat builds, the house is cooler for taking a print, and collection can happen before the afternoon peak. Take the print first, while the morning is still quiet. If you'd hoped to say goodbye outside, a shaded corner of the yard at dawn is kinder than the afternoon sun.
If you plan a 3D cast rather than a flat print, the Slidell heat changes the chemistry. Two-part silicone molding putty and casting resin both set faster when it's warm, so in June, July, August and September you may have only a minute or two to press the paw before the putty firms up. Work in an air-conditioned room, keep the kit in a cool cupboard beforehand and mix only once your pet is settled and in position.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing
If you'd like the print framed with a lock of fur, one Northeast crematory network charges $133 for that combination and $23 for a fur clipping on its own[6]. Some water cremation providers bundle a print in too: an Arizona aquamation service includes an ink paw print in individual packages from $75 to $349[7]. In Slidell, it's worth asking every provider what comes with the package before adding extras.

Landlords, parks and permits in Louisiana
Rules in Louisiana mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.
To find your county or city office in Louisiana, start with the official Louisiana local government directory.
We keep Louisiana's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Louisiana rules summary. Before a home burial in Slidell, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
A short checklist for a clean print
- If your pet dies unexpectedly at the clinic, ask for a few minutes before you leave the room. Most teams will give you time and can bring a print kit to you.
- Say exactly what you want: clay, ink, a nose print or all three, and how many copies.
- If you can't face doing it yourself, ask a nurse or technician to take it while you wait outside, and to show it to you before you go.
- Get the crematory's name and your pet's reference number from the front desk, written down.
- If no print was taken, phone the crematory as early as you can the next day and request one at check-in.
- Leave the urn and the other extras for later. Of everything on offer, only the print has to be settled now.
Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up
The climate on the north shore is hard on outdoor keepsakes: steady humidity, salt in the air near the lake, and mildew most of the year. Granite, bronze and glazed stoneware hold up; painted wood and cheap resin crack or grow mold. A tree or plant urn tends to thrive if you put it in the ground during late fall or winter, before summer arrives.

Questions people ask
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Slidell?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 90°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Will I have to travel to New Orleans to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in New Orleans (roughly 29 miles from Slidell) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Why does the Slidell page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 46.4%[5] of Louisiana residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Slidell?
The closest communities we cover are New Orleans (about 29 miles), Kenner (about 34 miles) and Gulfport (about 42 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Slidell too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How do I get a clear print from very furry paws?
Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors, leaving the fur around the edge, which gives the print its outline. For cats, long-haired dogs and rabbits, an inkless kit or soft clay often works better than ink. Rabbits have no pads at all, so clay shows the long shape of the hind foot beautifully.
My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?
You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.
