Saco, Maine
Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Saco
Ferry Beach and the jetty at Camp Ellis, where the Saco River meets the sea, are familiar ground for plenty of Saco households and the animals they raised. Some choose to remember a companion there with a visit on an anniversary, whether or not any ashes are scattered. If you do plan to scatter, look up the rules for the beach or state park first.
Saco houses range from Federal-style homes near downtown to seasonal cottages by the beach, and many families want a keepsake that suits a small or shared space. A wooden box on a desk, a glass heart holding a swirl of ash, or a picture frame with a sealed pocket behind the photo all work well. A granite marker in the flower bed suits homeowners with a yard.
In a smaller place like Saco, the local vet usually arranges aftercare and sends pets to a crematory in a larger centre such as Saco. That makes the vet the natural moment for a print, because once your pet leaves town it's much harder to ask. Tell the clinic you'd like a clay or ink print before collection, and check it's clear before you leave.
With roughly 21,159 residents, Saco is the 9th-largest of the 13 Maine communities we cover.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Biddeford (6 miles), South Portland (10 miles) and Kennebunkport (12 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
7,800
Saco: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
21,159 ÷ 2.5 = 8,464 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 7,800. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
650
Saco families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
7,800 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 650 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Maine
Because Maine cremates about 74.7%[5] of the people who die there, many families have no grave to visit, for people or for pets. Something has to take the place of a headstone, and a print does that job surprisingly well. It's physical, it's unmistakably your animal, and it can hang by the front door or sit on a desk. If you plan to scatter the ashes, the print may be the only memorial you keep.
We take the Maine rate from Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Saco, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Getting a clean print in Saco in any season
With 5 months of freezing average lows, Saco winters are hard on posted parcels too. If you're sending a clay print away to be cast in metal or scanned for jewelry, wrap it well, avoid shipping over a weekend and send a photo or scan first where the maker accepts one. Then the original never has to leave your warm house at all.
Winter in Saco brings average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March, November and December. Cold makes modeling clay stiff, so warm it in your hands for a few minutes and roll it smooth before pressing. If your pet has been kept in a cold garage, a clinic cooler or a crematory's cold room, the paw pads will be firm, so press the clay onto the paw rather than the paw into the clay.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Saco
A paw print is one of the least expensive keepsakes there is. Many US crematories sell it as a small add-on: one Arizona provider lists a clay paw impression at $10, a nose print at $10 and a laser-engraved paw print at $15[6], and across the US price lists we've checked, paw-print add-ons have a median of about $32[7]. Prices in Saco vary by provider, so ask whether a print is already included before you pay extra.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Maine: Maine costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial, scattering and prints in Maine
There are no rules about taking a paw print; it's yours to do at home, at the clinic or at the crematory. Where Maine does have rules is what happens next: whether your pet can be buried at home and where ashes can be scattered. Those choices can affect your print too, for example if you want it set into a garden stone or a grave marker.

For Maine's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Maine guide. Local rules in Saco can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
A short checklist for a clean print
- Mention the print when you book the euthanasia appointment or cremation, not on the day. Ask for it to be written on the aftercare form.
- Ask what kind they take: a clay disc, an ink print or both. If you might want jewelry later, ask for an ink or inkless print as well.
- Ask for two copies when several people at home would each like their own.
- Ask to see or photograph the print before your pet leaves the clinic, so it can be retaken if it's smudged.
- Check how it comes back: in your hands the same day, or alongside the ashes later, and what name goes on it.
- Keep the paperwork so that, once everything is returned, the invoice, ashes and print can be tied together.
Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up
Anything placed outdoors near Saco Bay must cope with salt fog, snow and repeated freezes. Granite, slate and bronze keep their looks; painted wood, cheap cement and plastic crack or bleach within a season or two. For a planted tree urn, choose a native such as pitch pine or bayberry, and plant in late May once the ground has softened.

Questions people ask
How many pet owners live in Saco?
By our estimate, about 7,800 households in Saco have at least one dog or cat, and around 650 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 21,159, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Saco?
January, February, March, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 80°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Saco?
The closest communities we cover are Biddeford (about 6 miles), South Portland (about 10 miles) and Kennebunkport (about 12 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Saco too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Why does the Saco page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) reports about 74.7%[5] of Maine residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can I take the print myself before the vet or crematory arrives?
Absolutely, and many people prefer to. Have the clay warmed or the card taped down before the appointment, choose a quiet room and take a few prints while your pet is calm. If collection is happening after a home euthanasia, the team will usually wait a few minutes while you take one afterwards too. Just let them know.
What is a silver-clay paw print, and what does it cost?
Silver clay is a modeling clay made of fine silver particles and a binder. A jeweler presses your pet's paw, or a copy of it, into the clay, dries it and fires it in a kiln, which burns off the binder and leaves solid silver with the pad shapes intact. A Northeast US crematory network prices a clay or silver-clay paw print at $76[9]. Ask whether the piece is a direct impression or a scaled copy, and whether it comes as a pendant or a flat token.
