Aberdeen, Maryland
Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Aberdeen
For homeowners who plan to stay, an outdoor memorial in the garden can be a lasting tribute. Harford County's cold winters and humid summers are tough on resin and concrete, while granite and bronze last far longer. Set a stone on a bed of crushed rock so frost doesn't tip it, and pick a spot visible from the kitchen or back deck.
Military families in Aberdeen tend to favor memorials built to travel: a sealed urn that survives a moving truck, a ring or pendant holding a few grains of ashes, or a display frame with tags, a collar and a photo. Some add a brass plate listing the places the animal lived. There's no rush to choose; the temporary container is secure for as long as it takes.
There may be no ceramic studio or engraver in Aberdeen, but that matters less than it used to. Most jewelry, engraving and print-art makers work from a photo or scan of the print, sent by email, and post the finished piece back. Photograph your print flat in daylight, keep the original safe at home and shop around online without sending anything irreplaceable.
With roughly 18,374 residents, Aberdeen is the 19th-largest of the 19 Maryland communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Baltimore, about 28 miles (45 km) away, which is where some providers serving Aberdeen are based.
Aberdeen sits within easy reach of Middletown (25 miles), Newark (25 miles) and Baltimore (28 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Aberdeen; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
6,750
Aberdeen: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
18,374 ÷ 2.5 = 7,350 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 6,750. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
560
dog and cat deaths per year in Aberdeen, our estimate
How we calculated this
6,750 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 560 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first
In Maryland, about 55.2%[5] of people are cremated, and that share has been rising for years. Pet crematories have multiplied along with it, and most now offer paw prints, nose prints and fur clippings. Families who grew up with burial don't always know to ask, so it's worth saying plainly that you want one.
The Maryland figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Seasons in Aberdeen and a print that lasts
With 4 months of freezing average lows, Aberdeen winters are hard on posted parcels too. If you're sending a clay print away to be cast in metal or scanned for jewelry, wrap it well, avoid shipping over a weekend and send a photo or scan first where the maker accepts one. Then the original never has to leave your warm house at all.
If you're planning a garden stone with your pet's print pressed into it, the Aberdeen winter will decide your timing. Concrete and mortar need temperatures above freezing to cure properly, so take the print now in clay or ink and keep it indoors. In spring, once the ground has thawed, you or a local stonemason can use it to make the outdoor memorial.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing
Compared with the cremation itself, a print is a small line on the bill. Private dog cremation averages about $260[6] in the US, while paw-print add-ons at crematories range from about $10 to $76[7]. The bigger spend comes later, if you choose jewelry: a paw-print bangle bracelet from one crematory network costs $385[8]. Use the table to plan what fits your budget in Aberdeen.

Rules in Maryland that touch on keepsakes
There are no rules about taking a paw print; it's yours to do at home, at the clinic or at the crematory. Where Maryland does have rules is what happens next: whether your pet can be buried at home and where ashes can be scattered. Those choices can affect your print too, for example if you want it set into a garden stone or a grave marker.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the Maryland level first; our Maryland rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Aberdeen or your HOA adds anything.
In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake
- For a horse, book the farrier to trim and clean the hoof first. Pick out the sole and dry it well.
- Press the hoof into a thick slab of clay resting on a board, or coat the sole in non-toxic paint and set it down on stiff card. Ask a helper to keep the leg still while you do it.
- Keep the last shoe and a length of tail or mane hair, since plenty of owners later have the hair plaited or cast in resin.
- For a bird or a very small pet, use very soft clay or inkless paper and the lightest pressure. Tiny toes show best in clay.
- For a fluffy cat or rabbit, go inkless so nothing ends up on fur they'll wash later; for rabbits especially, clay captures the long, narrow foot well.
- Dry and store every print indoors, then take a photo so any maker can use the picture, not the original.
Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up
When grandparents and siblings are scattered across the country, Aberdeen families sometimes ask for the ashes to be split into several small sealed vessels that can be posted home. A clay impression or a lock of fur can go in the same parcel. Any keepsake that comes from the body needs to be requested while the provider still has your companion, so raise it on the first call.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Aberdeen?
Usually yes. Middletown is about 25 miles away, Newark is about 25 miles away and Baltimore is about 28 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How does Aberdeen's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Aberdeen, with average highs around 85°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Roughly how many pets die in Aberdeen each year?
Our estimate is around 560. It comes from Aberdeen's population (about 18,374), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 6,750 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Where are the providers that serve Aberdeen actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Baltimore, about 28 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Aberdeen and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can I get a hoof print from my horse?
Yes. Most owners take one after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the hoof: pick out the sole, dry it and press it into a thick slab of clay on a board, or paint it with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Someone should hold the foot steady. Many owners also keep the last shoe and a length of tail hair.
Can I take the print myself before the vet or crematory arrives?
Absolutely, and many people prefer to. Have the clay warmed or the card taped down before the appointment, choose a quiet room and take a few prints while your pet is calm. If collection is happening after a home euthanasia, the team will usually wait a few minutes while you take one afterwards too. Just let them know.
