Paw print keepsakes in Westminster: where to start
Westminster families often choose memorials with a rural feel: a fieldstone with a carved name set at the edge of the garden, a wooden box made from local hardwood, or a tree planted along a fence line. Indoors, a framed print or a pendant keeps the memory close. There's no deadline; many people wait until spring to decide what feels right.
On family land around Westminster, some owners scatter a portion of ashes over a favorite field and keep the rest in the house. Others divide remains among siblings or grandchildren in small keepsake urns. If you'd like a paw or hoof print, a tuft of fur or a split of the ashes, tell the provider before cremation, since those can't be arranged afterward.
If your pet will travel to a crematory near Baltimore, the journey can take a day or two, depending on collection schedules. Many crematories offer a print at intake, which is a useful backup. But if you can, take your own before your pet leaves Westminster. That way you have it in your hands and don't depend on anyone else remembering.
Westminster is home to about 20,589 people, the 17th-largest of the 19 Maryland communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Westminster are based about 29 miles away in Baltimore, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Frederick (24 miles, a larger centre), Columbia (27 miles, a larger centre) and Baltimore (29 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
7,600
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Westminster
How we calculated this
20,589 ÷ 2.5 = 8,236 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 7,600. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
630
Westminster families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
7,600 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 630 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

What local funeral habits mean for a print
In Maryland, about 55.2%[5] of people are cremated, and that share has been rising for years. Pet crematories have multiplied along with it, and most now offer paw prints, nose prints and fur clippings. Families who grew up with burial don't always know to ask, so it's worth saying plainly that you want one.
We take the Maryland rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Westminster, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Clay, ink and the local climate
Winter in Westminster offers a keepsake many owners overlook: your pet's tracks in fresh snow. On a still morning in January, a line of paw prints across the yard can be photographed from directly above and later engraved or printed, much like an ink print. It's no replacement for a proper impression, but for an older dog who loves the snow, it's a lovely record of an ordinary day.
Plaster and cold don't mix well. Plaster sets more slowly in a cold room, and if the water in it freezes before it cures, the cast turns chalky and crumbles. In January, February, March and December, mix plaster with lukewarm water, let it set somewhere warm indoors and never leave a curing cast in a car, porch or shed overnight. The same goes for air-dry clay.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing
A paw print is one of the least expensive keepsakes there is. Many US crematories sell it as a small add-on: one Arizona provider lists a clay paw impression at $10, a nose print at $10 and a laser-engraved paw print at $15[6], and across the US price lists we've checked, paw-print add-ons have a median of about $32[7]. Prices in Westminster vary by provider, so ask whether a print is already included before you pay extra.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Maryland: Maryland costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What the law in Maryland does and doesn't cover
Burial rules in many places, including Maryland, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.
Maryland keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Westminster.
The Maryland page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Westminster's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Your paw print plan for Westminster
- For a horse, book the farrier to trim and clean the hoof first. Pick out the sole and dry it well.
- Press the hoof into a thick slab of clay resting on a board, or coat the sole in non-toxic paint and set it down on stiff card. Ask a helper to keep the leg still while you do it.
- Keep the last shoe and a length of tail or mane hair, which many horse owners have braided or set into resin.
- For a bird or a very small pet, choose the softest clay or an inkless sheet, and barely press at all. Clay picks up tiny toes best.
- For a fluffy cat or rabbit, go inkless so nothing ends up on fur they'll wash later; for rabbits especially, clay captures the long, narrow foot well.
- Dry and store every print indoors, and photograph it so a maker can work from the image.
Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up
Carroll County's winters bring more freeze-thaw cycles than the coast, and a stone set straight into the soil can heave and tilt within a season or two. Lay a gravel base first, choose granite or bronze over cast concrete, and keep the marker a little proud of the ground so meltwater runs off. A spot with some afternoon shade helps the engraving stay crisp.

Questions people ask
Why does the Westminster page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.2%[5] of Maryland residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How many pet owners live in Westminster?
By our estimate, about 7,600 households in Westminster have at least one dog or cat, and around 630 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 20,589, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Does the Westminster climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 85°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Where are the providers that serve Westminster actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Baltimore, about 29 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Westminster and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How do I get my pet's paw print in Westminster?
You have three options. Take it yourself at home with clay or an ink kit, ideally while your pet is still well. Ask your vet or in-home euthanasia vet to take one at the appointment. Or ask the pet crematory to take one at intake, before cremation. Whichever you choose, ask for it in advance and check the print is clear before your pet leaves.
Is there free support if making the print brings up a lot of grief?
Yes. Veterinary schools run free pet loss lines: Cornell's Pet Loss Support Hotline is staffed by veterinary students trained by grief counselors[9], and Tufts runs a volunteer helpline on Monday to Thursday evenings, with 24-hour voicemail[10]. Strong feelings while you hold your pet's paw are normal, and some people find the print is the moment it all becomes real. Our guides also cover early grief.
