Getting a paw print in Kentwood: the local picture
A few Kentwood families plant a flowering shrub or a row of tulips as a living memorial, while others would rather have something they can hold, like a pawprint pressed in clay or a small pendant carrying ash. Prints and fur clippings need to be requested before cremation. Jewelry and other ash-based pieces can be ordered any time afterwards, even a year later.
Snow piles up along Kentwood driveways and sidewalks all winter, and anything small in the front yard can get buried or knocked by a plow blade. A backyard spot near a fence or under a tree is safer for a marker. Pick a dense stone rather than cast resin, and bed it in gravel so the spring thaw doesn't lift one corner.
Small-town clinics in Kentwood may close at weekends, so if your pet dies on a Saturday evening, you may be looking after them at home until Monday. A print can still be taken during that time. Keep your pet cool, lay them on a towel, and press the paw gently into warmed clay, or press the clay onto the paw if the leg has stiffened.
With roughly 54,776 residents, Kentwood is the 23rd-largest of the 63 Michigan communities we cover. Grand Rapids, roughly 7 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Kentwood run from there.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Wyoming (6 miles), Grand Rapids (7 miles, a larger centre) and Walker (11 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
20,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Kentwood
How we calculated this
54,776 ÷ 2.5 = 21,910 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 20,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
1,700
Kentwood families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
20,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,700 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

How Michigan thinks about cremation, and why prints matter
In Michigan, about 69.5%[5] of people are cremated, and that share has been rising for years. Pet crematories have multiplied along with it, and most now offer paw prints, nose prints and fur clippings. Families who grew up with burial don't always know to ask, so it's worth saying plainly that you want one.
The Michigan figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Clay, ink and the local climate
Indoor heating in January, February, March and December makes the air in Kentwood homes very dry, which is its own problem for clay. A print left near a radiator, wood stove or forced-air vent can shrink unevenly and split along the thin toe edges. Dry it in a cooler room, away from heat sources, and lay a slightly damp cloth loosely over it for the first day to slow things down.
With 4 months of freezing average lows, Kentwood winters are hard on posted parcels too. If you're sending a clay print away to be cast in metal or scanned for jewelry, wrap it well, avoid shipping over a weekend and send a photo or scan first where the maker accepts one. Then the original never has to leave your warm house at all.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing
Compared with the cremation itself, a print is a small line on the bill. Private dog cremation averages about $260[6] in the US, while paw-print add-ons at crematories range from about $10 to $76[7]. The bigger spend comes later, if you choose jewelry: a paw-print bangle bracelet from one crematory network costs $385[8]. Use the table to plan what fits your budget in Kentwood.

Rules in Michigan that touch on keepsakes
Rules in Michigan say a good deal about where a pet can be buried and very little about how a crematory keeps track of each animal. That's one more reason to take your own print: made before collection, it's a record you created yourself. Ask your provider how pets are tagged, and read the burial and scattering notes below for the rest.
To find your county or city office in Michigan, start with the official Michigan local government directory.
For Michigan's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Michigan guide. Local rules in Kentwood can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
Your paw print plan for Kentwood
- If your pet dies unexpectedly at the clinic, ask for a few minutes alone with them before you go. Staff will almost always allow this, and many can fetch a print kit for you there and then.
- Say exactly what you want: clay, ink, a nose print or all three, and how many copies.
- If you can't face doing it yourself, a nurse or technician can make the print while you step out of the room; ask them to show you the result before you head home.
- Get the crematory's name and your pet's reference number on paper from reception before you leave.
- If no print was taken, phone the crematory as early as you can the next day and request one at check-in.
- Leave the urn and the other extras for later. The print is the only decision that can't wait.
Turning a print into something lasting
Kentwood brings together families from Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East alongside longtime West Michigan households, and there's no single way people here remember a pet. Some choose a simple urn, others a garden stone, and others a photo set among candles on a family shelf. If you want text in another language or script, most engravers can work from a clear typed or scanned sample.

Questions people ask
How do Michigan attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Michigan human cremation rate at about 69.5%[5]. We show it on the Kentwood page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Will I have to travel to Grand Rapids to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Grand Rapids (roughly 7 miles from Kentwood) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Kentwood?
Usually yes. Wyoming is about 6 miles away, Grand Rapids is about 7 miles away and Walker is about 11 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Kentwood climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 83°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?
You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.
Can I get a print if my pet is being cremated near Grand Rapids?
Yes. Many crematories take a print at intake and return it with the ashes. But if the crematory is some distance from Kentwood, it's easier to take the print locally, either yourself at home or through your vet before collection. That way you can check it's clear and redo it if needed.
