Apple Valley, Minnesota
Arranging a paw print around Apple Valley
A memorial tree suits Apple Valley's suburban yards well, as long as it is hardy enough for a Minnesota winter. Crabapple, serviceberry, lilac and many maples thrive here. Stir a little of the ashes into the backfill when you plant, water it in well, and the tree grows alongside your family, with its spring blossoms arriving as a reminder every May.
Nothing needs to be decided on the day of collection. Many Apple Valley families bring the ashes home in the plain box they come in and simply live with them for a while before picking a permanent memorial. The seasons change what feels right, and a choice made after a few months, once the shock has faded, often fits the family better.
If your pet will travel to a crematory near Saint Paul, the journey can take a day or two, depending on collection schedules. Many crematories offer a print at intake, which is a useful backup. But if you can, take your own before your pet leaves Apple Valley. That way you have it in your hands and don't depend on anyone else remembering.
Apple Valley's population is around 55,248, the 17th-largest of the 67 Minnesota communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Apple Valley are based about 16 miles away in Saint Paul, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
For a second opinion on price, Burnsville (4 miles), Eagan (5 miles) and Lakeville (5 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Apple Valley routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
20,500
Apple Valley: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
55,248 ÷ 2.5 = 22,099 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 20,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
1,700
dog and cat deaths per year in Apple Valley, our estimate
How we calculated this
20,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,700 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first
On cremation, Minnesota sits in the middle, at about 68.5%[5] of human deaths, and for many families the choice is shaped by faith as much as by cost. If your beliefs lean toward burial, or you're simply unsure how you feel about cremating a pet, a paw print sits comfortably with either path. It involves nothing more than a gentle press into clay or onto card, and it leaves your pet exactly as they were.

Weather in Apple Valley and your pet's print
If you're planning a garden stone with your pet's print pressed into it, the Apple Valley winter will decide your timing. Concrete and mortar need temperatures above freezing to cure properly, so take the print now in clay or ink and keep it indoors. In spring, once the ground has thawed, you or a local stonemason can use it to make the outdoor memorial.
Clinics and crematories in and around Apple Valley often keep pets in cold storage before cremation, especially in January, February, March, November and December when collection runs can be delayed by weather. That doesn't prevent a print, but it helps to ask before your pet goes into the cooler. A quick print while the paw is still soft is far easier than one taken later from a cold, stiff paw.

What owners in Apple Valley typically pay for a print
If the print is heading for jewelry, budget for the metal rather than the print. By our estimate, a typical sterling silver pet pendant costs about $190[6], and entry-level solid gold pieces at the same retailer cost about 15 times the silver equivalent[7]. Ask any maker in Apple Valley whether the quote includes the chain, a proof image before production and engraving on the back, because those three extras are where quotes differ most.

What Minnesota allows after your pet dies
Renters in Minnesota often can't bury a pet in the yard without the landlord's agreement, and even where they can, the grave stays behind when the lease ends. That's one reason portable memorials such as prints are so popular. The notes below set out what Minnesota allows for burial and scattering; whatever they say, a print moves with you to the next address.

A short checklist for a clean print
- Take a breath. If your pet has just died at home, there is usually time for a print in the first few hours. Lay them on a towel in a cool room.
- Gather what you need: clay warmed in your hands, or card taped to a board with a pet-safe ink pad, plus a damp cloth.
- If the leg has stiffened, bring the clay to the paw. Ease it onto the pads with light pressure; don't try to push the foot down.
- Take a nose print too if you'd like one, with a light touch of ink or an inkless wipe.
- Call your vet or crematory afterwards, and let them know a print has already been made so they can skip that step.
- Let the print dry indoors, out of direct sun and well clear of radiators, before framing it or mailing it.
Keeping the print and the memory close
Photo urns, with a picture of your companion set into the front or engraved onto a panel, suit families who want something personal that takes up little room. Pick an everyday snapshot over a formal portrait: sprawled in a sunbeam, curled on a lap, waiting by the door. Those ordinary moments are usually the ones people most want to hold on to.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Apple Valley?
Usually yes. Burnsville is about 4 miles away, Eagan is about 5 miles away and Lakeville is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Saint Paul to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Saint Paul (roughly 16 miles from Apple Valley) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Why does the Apple Valley page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 68.5%[5] of Minnesota residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Does the Apple Valley climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 83°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Can I get a print if my pet is being cremated near Saint Paul?
Yes. Many crematories take a print at intake and return it with the ashes. But if the crematory is some distance from Apple Valley, it's easier to take the print locally, either yourself at home or through your vet before collection. That way you can check it's clear and redo it if needed.
There's no engraver in Apple Valley. How do I turn a print into jewelry?
Photograph or scan the print flat in daylight, with no shadow, and send the image to a maker who works by mail. Most engraving and jewelry is made from an image, not the original. Keep the clay or ink print at home. If a maker needs the physical print for casting, wrap it well and use tracked postage.
