Who takes paw prints in Columbia
The MKT Trail runs through Columbia's parks and woods to link up with the Katy Trail near the Missouri River, and many residents have long memories of time outdoors along it. If you're thinking of scattering ashes in a park or along a trail, check the rules for that land first. Keeping part of the ashes for an urn or small keepsake gives you a memorial at home too.
Missouri winters bring repeated freeze and thaw, which can crack and heave garden memorials. An engraved granite or limestone marker set flat into the ground lasts far better than wood or resin. If you own your home and plan to stay, a biodegradable urn planted with a native tree, such as a redbud or dogwood, gives a memorial that blooms each spring.
Home goodbyes are increasingly common in Columbia. If you're booking an in-home vet, ask whether they bring a clay kit and whether they'll take two prints, one for each person in the family. Taking your own print the day before, when your pet is calm and comfortable on their own bed, is another option and often gives a cleaner result.
With roughly 130,851 residents, Columbia is the 4th-largest of the 43 Missouri communities we cover.
Our pages for Jefferson City (28 miles), Sedalia (51 miles) and Warrensburg (76 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Columbia as well.
Our estimate
48,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Columbia
How we calculated this
130,851 ÷ 2.5 = 52,340 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 48,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
4,000
Estimated dog and cat losses in Columbia each year
How we calculated this
48,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 4,000 a year. Treat it as a minimum.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

How Missouri thinks about cremation, and why prints matter
Human funerals in Missouri split between cremation, at about 59.8%[5], and burial for most of the rest, so pet cemeteries and pet crematories both have a local following. If you're leaning toward a cemetery plot, ask what kind of marker they allow. Some accept an etched granite plaque, some a bronze plate cast from a clay print, and some only flat stones. The answer tells you whether you need a clay impression, a flat ink print or both.
That Missouri rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Columbia only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Seasons in Columbia and a print that lasts
With 3 months of freezing average lows, Columbia winters are hard on posted parcels too. If you're sending a clay print away to be cast in metal or scanned for jewelry, wrap it well, avoid shipping over a weekend and send a photo or scan first where the maker accepts one. Then the original never has to leave your warm house at all.
Indoor heating in January, February and December makes the air in Columbia homes very dry, which is its own problem for clay. A print left near a radiator, wood stove or forced-air vent can shrink unevenly and split along the thin toe edges. Dry it in a cooler room, away from heat sources, and lay a slightly damp cloth loosely over it for the first day to slow things down.

Paw print costs around Columbia, line by line
If you'd like the print framed with a lock of fur, one Northeast crematory network charges $133 for that combination and $23 for a fur clipping on its own[6]. Some water cremation providers bundle a print in too: an Arizona aquamation service includes an ink paw print in individual packages from $75 to $349[7]. In Columbia, it's worth asking every provider what comes with the package before adding extras.

Landlords, parks and permits in Missouri
Nothing in Missouri restricts a paw print, a nose print or a lock of fur. What local rules do shape is where ashes may go, and some favorite places, such as parks, beaches and trails, need the landowner's permission. If that permission is hard to get, a print can carry the memory of the place instead: frame it beside a photo taken there, or have the trail's name engraved under the paw.
Missouri keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Columbia.
For Missouri's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Missouri guide. Local rules in Columbia can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake
- Mention the print when you book the euthanasia appointment or cremation, not on the day. Ask for it to be written on the aftercare form.
- Ask what kind they take: a clay disc, an ink print or both. If you might want jewelry later, ask for an ink or inkless print as well.
- Ask for two copies when several people at home would each like their own.
- Ask to see or photograph the print before your pet leaves the clinic, so it can be retaken if it's smudged.
- Check how it comes back: with you that day, or with the ashes later, and how it's labeled.
- Keep the paperwork so that, once everything is returned, the invoice, ashes and print can be tied together.
Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up
With so many Columbia residents renting or likely to move after graduation or a new job, portable memorials make sense. A keepsake urn, a paw print impression, a framed photo with a small ash compartment or a piece of jewelry holding a little ash all travel easily. Ashes can also be divided so parents or roommates who shared your pet have a share.

Questions people ask
How does Columbia's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Columbia, with average highs around 89°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Columbia?
Usually yes. Jefferson City is about 28 miles away, Sedalia is about 51 miles away and Warrensburg is about 76 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Roughly how many pets die in Columbia each year?
Our estimate is around 4,000. It comes from Columbia's population (about 130,851), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 48,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
How do Missouri attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Missouri human cremation rate at about 59.8%[5]. We show it on the Columbia page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How do I get a nose print from my cat?
Cats have small noses and dislike being fussed, so pick a sleepy moment. Use an inkless wipe or the lightest dab of pet-safe ink on a soft sponge, then touch a small folded card to the nose from the front and lift away. Expect a faint, partial print; that's normal. Take several attempts over a few days rather than persisting in one session, and wipe the nose clean afterwards so your cat doesn't lick the residue.
Can I make a plaster paw cast in cold weather?
Yes, but do it indoors. Plaster sets more slowly in a cold room, and if the water in it freezes before it has cured, the cast turns chalky and crumbles. Mix it with lukewarm water, let it set somewhere warm and never leave a curing cast in a car, garage or porch overnight during a Columbia winter.
