A paw print to keep, in Jersey City

Jersey City, New Jersey

Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Jersey City

Space is at a premium in Jersey City apartments, so compact memorials are popular: a keepsake urn on a windowsill, a paw print in a shadow box, or a ring with a trace of ashes. Relatives across the river can each have a share if the ashes are portioned out first. Small pieces also travel easily if you move across the river or out to the suburbs.

Jersey City is one of the most diverse cities in the country, and families here bring many traditions to remembering a pet: candles and photos, prayers, flowers on a birthday, a quiet visit to the waterfront. There's no single right way. If you'd like a memorial that reflects your culture or faith, tell us, and we'll look for options that fit.

Home goodbyes are increasingly common in Jersey City. If you're booking an in-home vet, ask whether they bring a clay kit and whether they'll take two prints, one for each person in the family. Taking your own print the day before, when your pet is calm and comfortable on their own bed, is another option and often gives a cleaner result.

About 302,013 people live in Jersey City, which makes it the 2nd-largest of the 58 New Jersey communities we cover. Newark, roughly 7 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Jersey City run from there.

For a second opinion on price, Hoboken (2 miles), New York City (2 miles, a larger centre) and Union City (3 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Jersey City routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Our estimate

110,000

Jersey City: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate

How we calculated this

302,013 ÷ 2.5 = 120,805 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 110,000. Multi-pet homes count once.

Our estimate

9,250

Jersey City families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)

How we calculated this

110,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 9,250 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in New Jersey

About 56.5%[5] of people who die in New Jersey are cremated. With both burial and cremation common, you'll find pet cemeteries that set a print into a headstone and crematories that return one with the ashes. The print itself is the same either way. What changes is who takes it, so decide that early.

For the New Jersey figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Jersey City rather than as pet data.

Clay, ink and the local climate

Snow and ice in January, February and December can hold up home-visit vets and collection vans around Jersey City, sometimes by a day. If your pet dies during a storm or a cold snap, you may be caring for them longer than you expected. Keep them in the chilliest room of the house, away from heating, on a towel or blanket. Take the print early in that time, while the paws are still soft enough to press cleanly.

Winter in Jersey City brings average lows at or below freezing in January, February and December. Cold makes modeling clay stiff, so warm it in your hands for a few minutes and roll it smooth before pressing. If your pet has been kept in a cold garage, a clinic cooler or a crematory's cold room, the paw pads will be firm, so press the clay onto the paw rather than the paw into the clay.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Jersey City

If the print is heading for jewelry, budget for the metal rather than the print. By our estimate, a typical sterling silver pet pendant costs about $190[6], and entry-level solid gold pieces at the same retailer cost about 15 times the silver equivalent[7]. Ask any maker in Jersey City whether the quote includes the chain, a proof image before production and engraving on the back, because those three extras are where quotes differ most.

What the law in New Jersey does and doesn't cover

Paw prints sit outside most regulation, but the aftercare around them doesn't. Your local council or city, and the wider rules for New Jersey, may limit burying a pet at home and scattering ashes in public places. Check the notes below before you plan a garden memorial with your pet's print pressed into it.

New Jersey keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Jersey City.

The New Jersey page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Jersey City's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

A short checklist for a clean print

  1. If your pet dies while you're away from home, phone whoever has them, the kennel, the sitter or a nearby vet, and ask for two things first: that your pet is kept cool, and that a paw print is taken.
  2. Ask them to photograph the print so you can check it's come out clearly; a text is fine.
  3. Decide whether to bring your pet home or arrange cremation where they are; the print can travel with either choice.
  4. Ask for ink rather than clay when the print has to be mailed. Card travels well in an envelope; wet clay often doesn't.
  5. If you're driving home with your pet, the car needs to stay cool; make your own print once you're back, ahead of any burial or pickup.
  6. Keep names, numbers and receipts from everyone you deal with, so the pieces fit together afterwards.

Remembering your pet through their print

If you have a balcony or a small backyard behind a brownstone, a memorial stone or planter can give you a place to sit with your memories. Choose granite, bronze or glazed ceramic that stands up to humid summers and freezing winters, and keep it in a pot or on a paver if you rent, so it can come with you when you leave.

Questions people ask

How do New Jersey attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the New Jersey human cremation rate at about 56.5%[5]. We show it on the Jersey City page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

How many pet owners live in Jersey City?

By our estimate, about 110,000 households in Jersey City have at least one dog or cat, and around 9,250 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 302,013, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.

Does the Jersey City climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 87°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Jersey City?

Usually yes. Hoboken is about 2 miles away, New York City is about 2 miles away and Union City is about 3 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Can I post a clay paw print in winter?

Yes, but wrap it well. A fully dried and sealed clay print is sturdy, but freezing temperatures in a delivery van can crack one that's still slightly damp. Make sure it's completely dry, wrap it in bubble wrap inside a rigid box and avoid shipping over a weekend. Better still, send a scan if the maker accepts one.

What is a silver-clay paw print, and what does it cost?

Silver clay is a modeling clay made of fine silver particles and a binder. A jeweler presses your pet's paw, or a copy of it, into the clay, dries it and fires it in a kiln, which burns off the binder and leaves solid silver with the pad shapes intact. A Northeast US crematory network prices a clay or silver-clay paw print at $76[8]. Ask whether the piece is a direct impression or a scaled copy, and whether it comes as a pendant or a flat token.
