Albuquerque, New Mexico
Who takes paw prints in Albuquerque
New Mexico has its own memorial traditions: the descansos, small roadside crosses marking where someone died, and the ofrendas of Día de los Muertos, with photos, candles and marigolds. Many Albuquerque families bring that spirit to remembering a pet, with a small home altar holding an urn, a collar and a photo. Others prefer a garden stone, a pendant or a paw print framed on the wall.
Albuquerque's strong sun and dry air are hard on outdoor memorials, fading paint and cracking some materials. If you want a garden stone or marker, choose natural stone, metal or glazed ceramic, and place it where it gets some afternoon shade. A tree urn can work if you choose a drought-tolerant native such as a piñon or desert willow and plan for watering through the first few summers.
Apartment and condo living in Albuquerque adds a practical wrinkle. Collection teams may need a freight elevator, a loading bay or a parking permit, and building staff often ask for a set arrival time. That fixes the moment your pet leaves, so treat the print as something to finish before that slot. Book collection for an hour after the vet's visit rather than straight after, and you'll have room for a clay print and an ink copy without watching the clock.
With roughly 556,588 residents, Albuquerque is the largest of the 11 New Mexico communities we cover.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Rio Rancho (15 miles), Los Lunas (22 miles) and Santa Fe (56 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
205,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Albuquerque has (estimate)
How we calculated this
556,588 ÷ 2.5 = 222,635 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 205,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
17,000
dog and cat deaths per year in Albuquerque, our estimate
How we calculated this
205,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 17,000 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep
Cremation is the norm for people in New Mexico (about 70.5%[5] of deaths), and pet crematories there tend to offer a long menu of extras: paw prints, nose prints, fur clippings, name plates, photo urns. It's easy to feel you ought to say yes to everything. You don't have to. Pick the one or two things you'll actually look at in five years' time. For many families, that's a clear print and a small lock of fur.

Clay, ink and the local climate
Planning an outdoor memorial in Albuquerque? A garden stone set with your pet's print is lovely, but concrete won't cure properly in frost and can crack in extreme summer heat. Take the print now in clay or ink, keep it safe inside and make the stone in spring or autumn, when the weather is mild and the ground is workable.
Albuquerque gets both extremes: highs around 91°F in July, and average lows at or below freezing in January, February and December. Each season has its own risk for a print. In summer, air-dry clay can crack from drying too fast; in winter, plaster and clay can be ruined if they freeze before they've set. Whatever the month, dry and cure prints indoors, at room temperature, on a rack.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Albuquerque
Engraving is the add-on that surprises people. By our estimate, name-and-dates engraving adds about 36%[6] to the price of a mid-priced wooden urn, and a paw print costs extra again. Before you pay for either in Albuquerque, check your pet insurance: some wellness add-ons reimburse end-of-life costs, and one plan's add-on could pay up to $650 toward cremation, burial and keepsakes[7]. Read the policy wording, then ask for an itemized quote.

Landlords, parks and permits in New Mexico
Some towns and councils in New Mexico run a collection service for pets who die at home, usually without returning any ashes. If that's the route you take, a print will be the only keepsake you have, so take it before you call. The notes below cover the other options: home burial, pet cemeteries and scattering ashes.
City of Albuquerque Solid Waste Management publishes Albuquerque's official guidance. Note that it deals with public collection, not with booking a private cremation.
For New Mexico's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the New Mexico guide. Local rules in Albuquerque can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
Your paw print plan for Albuquerque
- Mention the print when you book the euthanasia appointment or cremation, not on the day. Ask for it to be written on the aftercare form.
- Ask what kind they take: a clay disc, an ink print or both. If you might want jewelry later, ask for an ink or inkless print as well.
- Ask for two copies if more than one person in the family would like one.
- Ask to see or photograph the print while your pet is still at the clinic; a smudged one can then be done again.
- Check how it comes back: in your hands the same day, or alongside the ashes later, and what name goes on it.
- Keep the paperwork so that, once everything is returned, the invoice, ashes and print can be tied together.
Ways families in Albuquerque keep a print close
Albuquerque has a rich tradition of craft, from Pueblo pottery to tinwork, carved wood and silver jewelry, and a handmade memorial fits here. A local artist can make a ceramic urn, a tin frame for a photo or a silver pendant to hold a little ash. If you are commissioning something, allow several weeks, and keep the ashes in their return container until it is ready.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Albuquerque?
Usually yes. Rio Rancho is about 15 miles away, Los Lunas is about 22 miles away and Santa Fe is about 56 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How does Albuquerque's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Albuquerque, with average highs around 91°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Why does the Albuquerque page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[5] of New Mexico residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How many pet owners live in Albuquerque?
By our estimate, about 205,000 households in Albuquerque have at least one dog or cat, and around 17,000 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 556,588, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Is a paw print included when a vet comes to our home in Albuquerque?
Often, but not always. Many home-visit vets bring a clay kit and include one print in their fee; others charge for it or leave it to the crematory. Ask when you book, and check whether a flat ink copy is possible as well. Home goodbyes are no longer unusual: in the Dog Aging Project, 22.8% of dogs who were euthanized died at home[9]. You can also take your own print before the vet arrives.
My pet has been in cold storage. Can I still get a print?
Usually, yes. A pet kept in a clinic cooler or a cold room will have firm pads and stiff legs, so the trick is to warm the clay well and press it gently onto the paw instead of pressing the paw into the clay. Ink works too, with a light touch. If you can, ask for the print before your pet goes into cold storage.
