Paw print keepsakes in Parma: timing, methods and costs

Parma, Ohio

Getting a paw print in Parma: the local picture

Parma lots are modest, so garden memorials tend to be small: a flat stone in a flower bed, a plaque by the back steps, a birdbath with an engraved rim. Freeze-thaw cycles and heavy wet snow crack cheap concrete, so choose granite, slate or cast bronze if you want something to last outdoors through many Ohio winters. Set it where you will see it from a window.

West Creek Reservation, part of Cleveland Metroparks, runs through Parma and is a familiar green space for many residents. If you are thinking of scattering there, ask the park district first, since public parks often restrict it. Planting a young tree with a bio urn in your own backyard is a simple alternative, and a native redbud or serviceberry fits a small suburban lot.

Dogs in and around a town like Parma often work for a living: herding, hunting, guarding stock or riding in a truck all day. Their pads are thicker and more callused than a house dog's, with nicks and old scars that are part of their story. Those details show beautifully in clay. Use a firmer clay, roll it a little thicker and hold steady pressure for a few seconds so the ridges come through.

Parma is home to about 78,581 people, the 7th-largest of the 106 Ohio communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Parma are based about 8 miles away in Cleveland, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Parma Heights (2 miles), North Royalton (5 miles) and Brook Park (5 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Our estimate

29,000

Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Parma

How we calculated this

78,581 ÷ 2.5 = 31,432 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 29,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

2,400

dog and cat deaths per year in Parma, our estimate

How we calculated this

29,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,400 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

If a number here surprises you, the primary material is American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science; we only apply it to this.

A pet at home in Parma

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first

About 59.1%[5] of people in Ohio are cremated, so cremation and burial are both common. Pet owners are split the same way: some bury at home or in a pet cemetery, others choose cremation. Either way, a print should be taken first. With a burial you usually have more time and can do it yourself; with cremation, ask the vet or crematory when you book.

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Ohio figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Parma tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

When the weather works against clay and ink

Winter in Parma brings average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March and December. Cold makes modeling clay stiff, so warm it in your hands for a few minutes and roll it smooth before pressing. If your pet has been kept in a cold garage, a clinic cooler or a crematory's cold room, the paw pads will be firm, so press the clay onto the paw rather than the paw into the clay.

Clinics and crematories in and around Parma often keep pets in cold storage before cremation, especially in January, February, March and December when collection runs can be delayed by weather. That doesn't prevent a print, but it helps to ask before your pet goes into the cooler. A quick print while the paw is still soft is far easier than one taken later from a cold, stiff paw.

Seasonal scene for planning aftercare in Parma

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes

Some providers include the print in the package. A Virginia crematory, for example, includes a paw print and a fur clipping with every private cremation package, which run $189–$300[6]. Others charge separately: a Northeast crematory network lists $49 for ink paw prints, $76 for a clay or silver-clay print and $111 framed[7]. When you compare quotes in Parma, check which approach each provider takes.

The Ohio price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

What Ohio allows after your pet dies

Burial rules in many places, including Ohio, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.

Ohio keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Parma.

Start with the Ohio rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Parma's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.

In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake

  1. If your pet dies unexpectedly at the clinic, ask for a few minutes before you leave the room. Most teams will give you time and can bring a print kit to you.
  2. Say exactly what you want: clay, ink, a nose print or all three, and how many copies.
  3. If you can't face doing it yourself, a nurse or technician can make the print while you step out of the room; ask them to show you the result before you head home.
  4. Get the crematory's name and your pet's reference number from the front desk, written down.
  5. If no print was taken, phone the crematory as early as you can the next day and request one at check-in.
  6. Leave the urn and the other extras for later. The print is the only decision that can't wait.

Turning a print into something lasting

Many Parma families already keep photos, candles and religious items in a place of honor at home, and a pet urn can fit naturally into that setting. Others prefer jewelry or a framed paw print that can be carried or hung on a wall. If you want more than one keepsake, check with the provider how much ash your pet will leave before you order anything.

Questions people ask

Where are the providers that serve Parma actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Cleveland, about 8 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Parma and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Parma?

Usually yes. Parma Heights is about 2 miles away, North Royalton is about 5 miles away and Brook Park is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Is Parma big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 29,000 Parma households keep a dog or cat and around 2,400 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 78,581), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

Does the Parma climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Why do so many owners miss the chance to take a print?

Because a print has a window. By our estimate, around 2,400 dogs and cats die in Parma each year, many of them suddenly or at an emergency clinic, when a clay kit is the last thing on anyone's mind. Taking a print while your pet is well, or asking for one when you book aftercare, is the simplest way not to miss it.

Should I take a paw print while my senior pet is still alive?

If you can, yes. A relaxed living pet usually gives the clearest print, and you can take as many as you like without pressure. It can also give anticipatory grief something useful to do; in an RSPCA survey, 75.4%[9] of bereaved owners said they grieved before their pet died. Choose a calm, good day and keep the session short.
