Pataskala, Ohio
Arranging a paw print around Pataskala
Some families here divide ashes three ways: an urn at home, a tiny amount sealed in a pendant, and a scattering on land owned by relatives down the road. In a suburb where people may not stay long, that combination travels well. Bring up any plan to share at the first call, and the provider can supply a separate small vessel without any fuss.
Newer Pataskala houses often have a patio and a modest back yard, while older properties have tree rows, outbuildings and space for a small memorial bed. So memorial choices here range widely, from a compact urn beside the TV to a stone set among daylilies. Renters, and anyone expecting to leave as the area keeps changing, may want something portable such as jewelry or a keepsake box.
Home burial on your own land is still common in and around Pataskala, where local rules allow it. If that's your plan, you have more time and privacy than a city owner waiting for a collection van. Take the print at home before you wrap your pet: a calm half hour on the porch or the kitchen floor, with clay warmed in your hands.
Pataskala is home to about 18,529 people, the 96th-largest of the 106 Ohio communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Pataskala are based about 16 miles away in Columbus, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
If you want to compare providers, look at Reynoldsburg (5 miles, a larger centre), Gahanna (9 miles) and Whitehall (9 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
6,800
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Pataskala
How we calculated this
18,529 ÷ 2.5 = 7,412 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 6,800. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
570
dog and cat deaths per year in Pataskala, our estimate
How we calculated this
6,800 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 570 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Ohio
In Ohio, about 59.1%[5] of people are cremated, and that share has been rising for years. Pet crematories have multiplied along with it, and most now offer paw prints, nose prints and fur clippings. Families who grew up with burial don't always know to ask, so it's worth saying plainly that you want one.
The Ohio percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Pataskala, not as a count of pets.
Getting a clean print in Pataskala in any season
Clinics and crematories in and around Pataskala often keep pets in cold storage before cremation, especially in January, February, March and December when collection runs can be delayed by weather. That doesn't prevent a print, but it helps to ask before your pet goes into the cooler. A quick print while the paw is still soft is far easier than one taken later from a cold, stiff paw.
Plaster and cold don't mix well. Plaster sets more slowly in a cold room, and if the water in it freezes before it cures, the cast turns chalky and crumbles. In January, February, March and December, mix plaster with lukewarm water, let it set somewhere warm indoors and never leave a curing cast in a car, porch or shed overnight. The same goes for air-dry clay.

Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing
If the print is heading for jewelry, budget for the metal rather than the print. By our estimate, a typical sterling silver pet pendant costs about $190[6], and entry-level solid gold pieces at the same retailer cost about 15 times the silver equivalent[7]. Ask any maker in Pataskala whether the quote includes the chain, a proof image before production and engraving on the back, because those three extras are where quotes differ most.

Rules in Ohio that touch on keepsakes
Some towns and councils in Ohio run a collection service for pets who die at home, usually without returning any ashes. If that's the route you take, a print will be the only keepsake you have, so take it before you call. The notes below cover the other options: home burial, pet cemeteries and scattering ashes.

A short checklist for a clean print
- If your pet dies unexpectedly at the clinic, ask for a few minutes alone with them before you go. Staff will almost always allow this, and many can fetch a print kit for you there and then.
- Say exactly what you want: ink, clay, a nose print, or every one of them, plus the number of copies.
- If you can't face doing it yourself, ask a nurse or technician to take it while you wait outside, and to show it to you before you go.
- Get the crematory's name and your pet's reference number on paper from reception before you leave.
- If no print was taken, phone the crematory as early as you can the next day and request one at check-in.
- Leave the urn and the other extras for later. Of everything on offer, only the print has to be settled now.
Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up
Licking County's heavy clay and repeated winter thaws punish anything left outside year-round. A granite or basalt marker outlasts poured concrete by decades, and a bed of crushed stone underneath stops frost from tipping it. For a living tribute, redbud, pawpaw or swamp white oak all tolerate the dense local soil and stay healthy through humid central Ohio summers. Soak a new tree deeply through its first dry August.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Ohio?
For people, yes: about 59.1%[5] of Ohio deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Pataskala follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Does the Pataskala climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 85°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Pataskala?
Usually yes. Reynoldsburg is about 5 miles away, Gahanna is about 9 miles away and Whitehall is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Roughly how many pets die in Pataskala each year?
Our estimate is around 570. It comes from Pataskala's population (about 18,529), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 6,800 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
How do I get a nose print from my cat?
Cats have small noses and dislike being fussed, so pick a sleepy moment. Use an inkless wipe or the lightest dab of pet-safe ink on a soft sponge, then touch a small folded card to the nose from the front and lift away. Expect a faint, partial print; that's normal. Take several attempts over a few days rather than persisting in one session, and wipe the nose clean afterwards so your cat doesn't lick the residue.
How many households in Pataskala have a dog or cat?
By our estimate, about 6,800 households in Pataskala have a dog or a cat, and around 570 dogs and cats are lost there each year. We calculate this from the city's population, average household size and national pet ownership and lifespan figures. The method is shown on this page.
