A paw print to keep, in Aiken
Aiken has an estimated 12,500 dog- or cat-owning households. If yours is one of them, a print taken now, or before cremation, is the keepsake you can't go back for.

Arranging a paw print around Aiken
Sandhills heat, summer storms and humid air wear away at outdoor memorials in Aiken. Soft stone crumbles, resin fades, and thin metal oxidizes into streaks. Granite and bronze, set on firm and well-drained sand, last far longer. Pine straw and oak leaves pile up quickly here, so a slightly raised base keeps even a small stone visible through every season.
Aiken's Winter Colony heritage and horse culture give many homes a traditional air, and remembrance here often matches it: a brass or mahogany urn in the library, a framed hoof or paw impression, or a granite tablet among camellias and azaleas. Smaller households might choose a pendant or a bracelet. Choose a setting before a material; the room or garden bed usually answers the rest.
Outdoor and barn cats are common around Aiken, and they don't always die where you'd expect. If you find your cat in a shed, under a hedge or in a hay loft, bring them inside to a cool, quiet spot and lay them on a towel before you do anything else. A print is often still possible, even some hours later. Clean the pads gently with a damp cloth first, because dust and straw show up in clay and ink.
Aiken's population is around 33,808, the 16th-largest of the 29 South Carolina communities we cover. Augusta, roughly 17 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Aiken run from there.
Nearby, we also have local pages for North Augusta (13 miles), Augusta (17 miles, a larger centre) and Grovetown (28 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
12,500
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Aiken
How we calculated this
33,808 ÷ 2.5 = 13,523 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 12,500. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
1,050
Estimated dog and cat losses in Aiken each year
How we calculated this
12,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,050 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

How South Carolina thinks about cremation, and why prints matter
Roughly 56.1%[5] of deaths in South Carolina end in cremation, which often means one family holds both preferences. A grandparent may want the dog buried under the apple tree while a younger owner would rather have ashes on the mantel. If that debate is happening in your house, start with the print. Everyone agrees on it, it has to come first anyway, and it buys you a calmer hour to decide the rest.
For the South Carolina figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Aiken rather than as pet data.
When the weather works against clay and ink
If you plan a 3D cast rather than a flat print, the Aiken heat changes the chemistry. Two-part silicone molding putty and casting resin both set faster when it's warm, so in May, June, July, August and September you may have only a minute or two to press the paw before the putty firms up. Work in an air-conditioned room, keep the kit in a cool cupboard beforehand and mix only once your pet is settled and in position.
Ink behaves differently in the Aiken heat. Pet-safe ink pads dry out quickly in warm rooms, which gives a patchy print, and a warm, damp paw can slide and smudge. Take ink prints in the coolest room of the house, with the air conditioning on, and dry the paw with a towel first. Press straight down, lift straight up and take three or four prints so you can keep the clearest.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Aiken
Compared with the cremation itself, a print is a small line on the bill. Private dog cremation averages about $260[6] in the US, while paw-print add-ons at crematories range from about $10 to $76[7]. The bigger spend comes later, if you choose jewelry: a paw-print bangle bracelet from one crematory network costs $385[8]. Use the table to plan what fits your budget in Aiken.

Burial, scattering and prints in South Carolina
Rules in South Carolina mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.

The South Carolina page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Aiken's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
A short checklist for a clean print
- If your pet is still with you, don't wait. Take a print on a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, when your pet is relaxed. A print from a living pet is usually the clearest.
- Choose your method. Clay for something to hold, ink or inkless paper for engraving and jewelry later. Our kit chooser helps you decide.
- Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors so the pads, not the fur, make the shape.
- Hold the leg, not the paw, and press straight down with steady pressure, then lift straight up. Take several prints and keep the clearest.
- Dry clay slowly indoors over two to three days, flipping it now and then, and finish with a coat of matte acrylic sealer.
- Photograph or scan the print flat in daylight. Most makers only need the image, so the original never leaves home.
Turning a print into something lasting
Many Aiken residents are retirees whose children settled elsewhere, and horse families often have friends and kin scattered by years on the show circuit. A crematory can package the ashes in several little urns or keepsakes, one per relative, and they travel well by car or mail. Settle the count before cremation, and find out how long custom engraving or artwork usually takes to be finished.

Questions people ask
Does the Aiken climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 94°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Is cremation common in South Carolina?
For people, yes: about 56.1%[5] of South Carolina deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Aiken follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to Augusta to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Augusta (roughly 17 miles from Aiken) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How many pet owners live in Aiken?
By our estimate, about 12,500 households in Aiken have at least one dog or cat, and around 1,050 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 33,808, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Can my pet's paw print be turned into a tattoo?
Yes, and it's a popular choice. A tattoo artist will want a clear, high-contrast flat print, so an ink or inkless print works better than clay. Scan it at a high resolution and bring the file to your consultation. Many people have the print tattooed at actual size, sometimes with the pet's name or a nose print alongside.
Is there free support if making the print brings up a lot of grief?
Yes. Veterinary schools run free pet loss lines: Cornell's Pet Loss Support Hotline is staffed by veterinary students trained by grief counselors[10], and Tufts runs a volunteer helpline on Monday to Thursday evenings, with 24-hour voicemail[11]. Strong feelings while you hold your pet's paw are normal, and some people find the print is the moment it all becomes real. Our guides also cover early grief.
