Florence, South Carolina
Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Florence
Pee Dee heat, humidity and summer squalls batter whatever sits outdoors. Soft stone gathers black mildew and painted resin bleaches in the sun, sometimes within two summers. Polished granite or cast bronze shrugs off that climate far better. Set the marker on slightly higher ground, so that when a storm dumps several inches of rain, water runs away from it instead of pooling.
Florence memorials lean practical and personal: a pine or oak urn in the den beside the family Bible, a clay pawprint hung near the kitchen, or a marker under a pecan in the side yard. Folks with acreage sometimes pick the corner of a pasture their animal loved. Notice where you tend to pause during an ordinary day, and let that place guide the choice.
Supplies are easy to find even in a small town. Air-dry modeling clay, a washable non-toxic ink pad, card stock and baby wipes are enough for a first print. A purpose-made kit is kinder for fluffy paws and cats, but it may take days to arrive, so buy one while your pet is still well rather than waiting until you need it urgently.
Florence is home to about 41,231 people, the 10th-largest of the 29 South Carolina communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Conway (49 miles), Lumberton (54 miles) and Myrtle Beach (61 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Florence routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
15,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Florence
How we calculated this
41,231 ÷ 2.5 = 16,492 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 15,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
1,250
dog and cat deaths per year in Florence, our estimate
How we calculated this
15,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,250 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

12.69 years[2]

11.18 years[4]

What local funeral habits mean for a print
Cremation has become steadily more common in South Carolina, now chosen for about 56.1%[5] of those who die there, and newer pet aftercare providers have arrived with it. Some offer a 3D scan of the paw or a digital print file alongside the clay. If a provider mentions this, ask whether you'll receive the file itself, in a standard format, so you can take it to any maker later rather than only through them.
For the South Carolina figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Florence rather than as pet data.
Clay, ink and the local climate
If you plan a 3D cast rather than a flat print, the Florence heat changes the chemistry. Two-part silicone molding putty and casting resin both set faster when it's warm, so in June, July, August and September you may have only a minute or two to press the paw before the putty firms up. Work in an air-conditioned room, keep the kit in a cool cupboard beforehand and mix only once your pet is settled and in position.
Strong sun in Florence, especially around July, fades ink faster than most people expect. A framed paw print in a bright hallway can lose its crispness within a few summers. Hang it on a wall that doesn't catch direct light, choose UV-filtering glass and keep a scan of the original. And never leave a clay print or a resin cast inside a parked car, a garage or an attic in summer, where temperatures climb far above 92°F.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Florence
If you'd like the print framed with a lock of fur, one Northeast crematory network charges $133 for that combination and $23 for a fur clipping on its own[6]. Some water cremation providers bundle a print in too: an Arizona aquamation service includes an ink paw print in individual packages from $75 to $349[7]. In Florence, it's worth asking every provider what comes with the package before adding extras.

Local rules worth knowing in South Carolina
Some towns and councils in South Carolina run a collection service for pets who die at home, usually without returning any ashes. If that's the route you take, a print will be the only keepsake you have, so take it before you call. The notes below cover the other options: home burial, pet cemeteries and scattering ashes.
South Carolina keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Florence.
For South Carolina's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the South Carolina guide. Local rules in Florence can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
Getting a paw print in Florence, step by step
- If your pet dies while you're away from home, phone whoever has them, the kennel, the sitter or a nearby vet, and ask for two things first: that your pet is kept cool, and that a paw print is taken.
- Ask them to photograph the print so you can check it's come out clearly; a text is fine.
- Decide whether to bring your pet home or arrange cremation where they are; the print can travel with either choice.
- Ask for ink rather than clay when the print has to be mailed. Card travels well in an envelope; wet clay often doesn't.
- If you're driving home with your pet, keep them cool and take your own print when you arrive, before burial or collection.
- Keep names, numbers and receipts for everyone involved, so everything can be matched up later.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
Families in Florence often have kin scattered across both Carolinas and further afield, so some request that the ashes be packed in several containers, one for each household. Small urns, lockets and glass hearts all travel easily by car or mail. Mention that plan during your first conversation, since the split happens at the crematory, and ask how many extra days any engraving or custom work adds.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Florence?
The closest communities we cover are Conway (about 49 miles), Lumberton (about 54 miles) and Myrtle Beach (about 61 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Florence too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Florence?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 92°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Why does the Florence page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 56.1%[5] of South Carolina residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Is Florence big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 15,000 Florence households keep a dog or cat and around 1,250 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 41,231), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Can my pet's paw print be turned into a tattoo?
Yes, and it's a popular choice. A tattoo artist will want a clear, high-contrast flat print, so an ink or inkless print works better than clay. Scan it at a high resolution and bring the file to your consultation. Many people have the print tattooed at actual size, sometimes with the pet's name or a nose print alongside.
How much does a paw print keepsake cost in Florence?
The print itself is usually inexpensive. US crematories list paw-print add-ons from about $10 to $76, with a median of about $32[9], and some include one in the cremation package. Finishing costs more: engraved paw prints on urns typically add $20 to $35, and paw or nose print pendants start at about $100. Ask providers in Florence what's already included.
