Getting a paw print in Tacoma: the local picture
Tacoma's older homes often have small, sloping yards with mature plantings, while apartments and condos near downtown and the waterfront call for something compact. An urn on a shelf, a framed paw print or cremation jewelry holding a little ash suits smaller spaces. If you have a garden, a stone tucked among ferns or a small tree can become a lasting place to remember your pet.
Many Tacoma families have relatives across the Pacific Northwest and beyond, and military households may move every few years. Sharing ashes among small keepsake urns or jewelry lets each person keep something wherever they live. There's no need to decide straight away. Bring the ashes home in a simple container and choose lasting pieces once everyone has had a chance to say what they'd like.
A clinic print is often a round clay disc with your pet's name stamped in, taken quickly while the team is with you. It's a lovely keepsake, but engravers and jewelers usually need a flat, high-contrast image. If you think you might want jewelry or an engraved urn later, ask for an ink or inkless print as well. It takes a minute more and saves regret.
Tacoma is home to about 229,816 people, the 3rd-largest of the 67 Washington communities we cover. Seattle, roughly 25 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Tacoma run from there.
Nearby, we also have local pages for University Place (5 miles), Federal Way (6 miles) and Lakewood (7 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
84,500
How many dog- or cat-owning households Tacoma has (estimate)
How we calculated this
229,816 ÷ 2.5 = 91,926 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 84,500. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
7,050
dog and cat deaths per year in Tacoma, our estimate
How we calculated this
84,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 7,050 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

12.69 years[2]

39%[3]

Cremation habits in Washington and the print window
When roughly 79.1%[5] of human funerals in Washington end in cremation, the whole system is built for speed, and pet aftercare often runs the same way. Collection can be booked for the same afternoon, and some crematories cremate within a day or two. That efficiency is a kindness, but it also shrinks the time in which a print can be taken. Ask how soon cremation will happen, and if it's quick, take the print yourself before collection.
Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) is where the Washington figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Tacoma tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
When the weather works against clay and ink
Humidity in Tacoma can still catch you out, even in a mild year. Air-dry clay that feels firm on top may be soft underneath, and sealing it too soon can trap moisture and leave a dull, cloudy finish. Turn the print daily, wait until it's pale and light all through, then seal it with a matte acrylic sealer before framing.
Tacoma has a fairly mild climate, which is good news for prints. Air-dry clay usually dries in two or three days at room temperature, and ink behaves predictably. The main thing to watch is damp: in November, the wettest month, clay can take longer to harden, so keep it off windowsills and away from bathrooms until it feels completely dry and light.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing
If you'd like the print framed with a lock of fur, one Northeast crematory network charges $133 for that combination and $23 for a fur clipping on its own[6]. Some water cremation providers bundle a print in too: an Arizona aquamation service includes an ink paw print in individual packages from $75 to $349[7]. In Tacoma, it's worth asking every provider what comes with the package before adding extras.

Landlords, parks and permits in Washington
Paw prints sit outside most regulation, but the aftercare around them doesn't. Your local council or city, and the wider rules for Washington, may limit burying a pet at home and scattering ashes in public places. Check the notes below before you plan a garden memorial with your pet's print pressed into it.
The official Washington local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Tacoma.
We keep Washington's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Washington rules summary. Before a home burial in Tacoma, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
How to make sure a print is taken in time
- Mention the print when you book rather than waiting until the appointment itself, whether that's the euthanasia or the cremation. Ask the team to note it on the aftercare form.
- Ask what kind they take: a clay disc, an ink print or both. If you might want jewelry later, ask for an ink or inkless print as well.
- Ask for two copies when several people at home would each like their own.
- Ask to see or photograph the print while your pet is still at the clinic; a smudged one can then be done again.
- Check how it comes back: in your hands the same day, or alongside the ashes later, and what name goes on it.
- Keep the paperwork so you can match the print, the ashes and the invoice when they arrive.
Ways families in Tacoma keep a print close
The Puget Sound rain is hard on some outdoor memorials, so choose granite, bronze or weather-rated finishes, and avoid materials that grow moss quickly. A native tree or shrub planted over a biodegradable urn can thrive in Tacoma's mild, wet climate. Some families want a memorial tied to Commencement Bay; water-soluble urns are made for that, but check the rules and choose a calm day.

Questions people ask
Does the Tacoma climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 78°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Tacoma?
The closest communities we cover are University Place (about 5 miles), Federal Way (about 6 miles) and Lakewood (about 7 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Tacoma too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is cremation common in Washington?
For people, yes: about 79.1%[5] of Washington deaths end in cremation, according to Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Tacoma follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to Seattle to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Seattle (roughly 25 miles from Tacoma) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can I get a hoof print from my horse?
Yes. Most owners take one after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the hoof: pick out the sole, dry it and press it into a thick slab of clay on a board, or paint it with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Someone should hold the foot steady. Many owners also keep the last shoe and a length of tail hair.
Why do so many owners miss the chance to take a print?
Because a print has a window. By our estimate, around 7,050 dogs and cats die in Tacoma each year, many of them suddenly or at an emergency clinic, when a clay kit is the last thing on anyone's mind. Taking a print while your pet is well, or asking for one when you book aftercare, is the simplest way not to miss it.
