Paw print keepsakes in Gillette: timing, methods and costs

Gillette, Wyoming

Paw print keepsakes in Gillette: where to start

Plenty of Gillette families moved here for work and may move again, which makes portable memorials popular. A compact urn, a pressed-clay hoof or paw mold, or a locket carrying a pinch of ashes can go wherever the next job is. If you own acreage and plan to stay, a stone marker near the house or barn gives the family a fixed place to visit.

Anything placed outdoors here faces hail, strong wind, intense sun and hard freezes. Granite and bronze hold up; lightweight resin figures often crack or blow away. For a tree rooted above a plant-based urn on your property, plan for late spring after the thaw, choose a species that tolerates wind and dry summers, and mark the spot with something heavy.

Outdoor and barn cats are common around Gillette, and they don't always die where you'd expect. If you find your cat in a shed, under a hedge or in a hay loft, bring them inside to a cool, quiet spot and lay them on a towel before you do anything else. A print is often still possible, even some hours later. Clean the pads gently with a damp cloth first, because dust and straw show up in clay and ink.

Gillette's population is around 34,024, the 3rd-largest of the 10 Wyoming communities we cover.

Our pages for Sheridan (81 miles), Spearfish (84 miles) and Casper (107 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Gillette as well.

Our estimate

12,500

Gillette: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate

How we calculated this

34,024 ÷ 2.5 = 13,610 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 12,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

1,050

Estimated dog and cat losses in Gillette each year

How we calculated this

12,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,050 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

How Wyoming thinks about cremation, and why prints matter

Cremation accounts for about 78.5%[5] of human deaths in Wyoming, so many households already have a shelf or cabinet where family ashes and photos sit. A pet's print tends to join that shelf. That's worth knowing before you choose a format: a clay disc needs a small stand, an ink print suits a frame the same size as your photos, and a print engraved straight onto the urn saves space altogether.

The Wyoming percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Gillette, not as a count of pets.

Heat, humidity, cold and drying times

If you're planning a garden stone with your pet's print pressed into it, the Gillette winter will decide your timing. Concrete and mortar need temperatures above freezing to cure properly, so take the print now in clay or ink and keep it indoors. In spring, once the ground has thawed, you or a local stonemason can use it to make the outdoor memorial.

Winter in Gillette brings average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March, April, October, November and December. Cold makes modeling clay stiff, so warm it in your hands for a few minutes and roll it smooth before pressing. If your pet has been kept in a cold garage, a clinic cooler or a crematory's cold room, the paw pads will be firm, so press the clay onto the paw rather than the paw into the clay.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes

Engraving is the add-on that surprises people. By our estimate, name-and-dates engraving adds about 36%[6] to the price of a mid-priced wooden urn, and a paw print costs extra again. Before you pay for either in Gillette, check your pet insurance: some wellness add-ons reimburse end-of-life costs, and one plan's add-on could pay up to $650 toward cremation, burial and keepsakes[7]. Read the policy wording, then ask for an itemized quote.

The full price table by product is on our Wyoming page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

What Wyoming allows after your pet dies

Burial rules in many places, including Wyoming, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.

To find your county or city office in Wyoming, start with the official Wyoming local government directory.

The rules that apply across Wyoming (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Wyoming page. Gillette may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

A short checklist for a clean print

  1. For a horse, have the farrier out beforehand to trim the hoof and tidy it up. Clean the sole thoroughly and let it dry.
  2. Press the hoof into a thick slab of clay resting on a board, or coat the sole in non-toxic paint and set it down on stiff card. Ask a helper to keep the leg still while you do it.
  3. Keep the last shoe and a length of tail or mane hair, since plenty of owners later have the hair plaited or cast in resin.
  4. For a bird or a very small pet, choose the softest clay or an inkless sheet, and barely press at all. Clay picks up tiny toes best.
  5. For a fluffy cat or rabbit, an inkless kit avoids ink on fur they'll groom later, and clay shows the long shape of a rabbit's foot.
  6. Dry and store every print indoors, then take a photo so any maker can use the picture, not the original.

Keeping the print and the memory close

Devils Tower is a day trip from Gillette, and the Bighorn Mountains rise to the west, so some families think about taking ashes somewhere dramatic. National monuments and national forests each regulate scattering in their own way; call the managing office before you go. Holding some ashes back at home as well gives you somewhere to return on anniversaries, whatever you decide about the rest.

Questions people ask

How do Wyoming attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Wyoming human cremation rate at about 78.5%[5]. We show it on the Gillette page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

How many pet owners live in Gillette?

By our estimate, about 12,500 households in Gillette have at least one dog or cat, and around 1,050 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 34,024, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Gillette?

Usually yes. Sheridan is about 81 miles away, Spearfish is about 84 miles away and Casper is about 107 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Gillette?

January, February, March, April, October, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 88°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.

Should I take a paw print while my senior pet is still alive?

If you can, yes. A relaxed living pet usually gives the clearest print, and you can take as many as you like without pressure. It can also give anticipatory grief something useful to do; in an RSPCA survey, 75.4%[9] of bereaved owners said they grieved before their pet died. Choose a calm, good day and keep the session short.

My pet has been in cold storage. Can I still get a print?

Usually, yes. A pet kept in a clinic cooler or a cold room will have firm pads and stiff legs, so the trick is to warm the clay well and press it gently onto the paw instead of pressing the paw into the clay. Ink works too, with a light touch. If you can, ask for the print before your pet goes into cold storage.
