Mackay, Queensland
Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Mackay
Seven in ten Australians are cremated, so ashes at home are familiar in Mackay. Some families take a portion to a place their pet loved, a quiet stretch of northern beach or a lookout in the Eungella hills, and bring the rest home. Pick a still morning in the dry season for it, and check whether the beach or park has rules about scattering.
Most Mackay families have a yard, and a tropical garden suits a living memorial: a frangipani, a hibiscus or a small palm with a stone at its base. Pick materials that won't fade or grow mould in the sun, rain and humidity; glazed ceramic and granite handle it well. Inside, people tend to choose a small urn for the bookcase, a pendant or a framed print of a paw. Nothing needs deciding straight away.
Farm and country homes around Mackay often have animals that city guides forget. A horse's hoof print is best taken after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the foot, pressed into a thick clay slab or painted onto heavy card. Keep the last shoe as well. For chickens, ducks or a pet parrot, very soft clay shows the delicate toes far better than ink.
With roughly 80,000 residents, Mackay is the 7th-largest of the 8 Queensland communities we cover.
Our estimate
26,500
Mackay: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
80,000 ÷ 2.5 = 32,000 households; × 49% (dog) + 34% (cat) = 26,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
2,200
Mackay families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
26,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,200 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
49%[1]
49% of Australian households have at least one dog, up from 40% in 2019.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
34%[3]
34% of Australian households have at least one cat, up from 27% in 2019.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
We built the this numbers from Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science and Animal Medicines Australia, Pets in Australia 2025 (media release), and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep
Cremation is the everyday choice in Australia: about 71%[5] of people who die there are cremated. Pet aftercare tends to follow the same habits, which means most pets here end up as a small box of ashes. Ashes don't show a paw, a nose or the shape of a toe. That's a big part of why prints matter so much in high-cremation places, and why local crematories are so used to being asked for one.
The Australia percentage above is from FuneralSmart (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Mackay, not as a count of pets.
Clay, ink and the local climate
Local weather in Mackay affects a paw print more than you might think. In hot, dry spells, air-dry clay can crack if it dries too fast, so dry it slowly indoors and turn it often. In humid months it stays soft for longer, so be patient. In cold weather, warm the clay in your hands and never let plaster freeze before it has set.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing
We haven't found published Australian or New Zealand prices for paw prints on their own; most are sold within cremation packages. RSPCA Queensland's memorial packages, for example, start from AUD 250 with the memorial returned within 14 days[6]. In Mackay, ask whether a clay or ink print is part of the package, and if not, what it adds.

What the law in Queensland does and doesn't cover
You don't need anyone's permission to take your pet's paw print, and prints, casts and ashes jewelry can be kept, posted or carried anywhere. The rules that matter in Queensland are about burial and scattering. If you plan a home burial, take the print before you begin; if you plan to scatter, keep some ashes back for a print pendant first.
In Australia, paw prints are usually part of a cremation package or a small add-on, and RSPCA Queensland's memorial packages come back within 14 days[6]. Summer heat is the main practical issue: take prints indoors with the air conditioning on, keep your pet cool first and dry air-dry clay slowly out of direct sun. In the tropical north, humidity can keep clay soft for days.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Queensland level first; our Queensland rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Mackay or your HOA adds anything.
How to make sure a print is taken in time
- If your pet is still with you, don't wait. Pick a quiet, settled moment, perhaps once they've eaten or come back from a walk, and make the print then. Prints taken while a pet is alive tend to come out sharpest.
- Choose your method. Clay if you want something to hold; ink or an inkless sheet if jewelry or engraving might come later. The kit chooser can settle it.
- Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors so the pads, not the fur, make the shape.
- Hold the leg, not the paw, and press straight down with steady pressure, then lift straight up. Take several prints and keep the clearest.
- Dry clay slowly indoors for two or three days, turning it, then seal it with a matte acrylic sealer.
- Photograph or scan the print flat in daylight. Makers can work from that image, so the original stays at home.
Ways families in Mackay keep a print close
Many Mackay families have someone working a roster in the Bowen Basin mines, so the whole household may not be home together for weeks. A sealed container keeps ashes safe until everyone can be there. If the family is split across towns, the ashes can be divided into a main urn and a few small vessels, so the person on site still has something to hold.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Australia?
For people, yes: about 71%[5] of Australia deaths end in cremation, according to FuneralSmart (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Mackay follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Roughly how many pets die in Mackay each year?
Our estimate is around 2,200. It comes from Mackay's population (about 80,000), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 26,500 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Is it too hot in summer to make an air-dry clay print?
Not if you work indoors. In an Australian or New Zealand summer, dry heat can crack air-dry clay and tropical humidity can keep it soft for days. Take the print in an air-conditioned room, dry it slowly on a rack away from windows and seal it once it's fully light. If your pet has died in the heat, keep them cool first and take the print early.
Is ink safe on my pet's paw?
Use a pet-safe, non-toxic, water-based ink made for paw prints, not a stamp pad or permanent marker. Wipe the paw clean straight afterwards with a damp cloth or unscented pet wipe and dry between the toes so your pet doesn't lick any off. For fluffy paws, cats and anxious pets, an inkless kit, where a special wipe reacts with treated paper, avoids ink on fur altogether.
Can I get a hoof print from my horse?
Yes. Most owners take one after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the hoof: pick out the sole, dry it and press it into a thick slab of clay on a board, or paint it with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Someone should hold the foot steady. Many owners also keep the last shoe and a length of tail hair.
Should I take a paw print while my senior pet is still alive?
If you can, yes. A relaxed living pet usually gives the clearest print, and you can take as many as you like without pressure. It can also give anticipatory grief something useful to do; in an RSPCA survey, 75.4%[8] of bereaved owners said they grieved before their pet died. Choose a calm, good day and keep the session short.
