A paw print to keep, in Sunshine Coast
Roughly 9,600 dogs and cats die in Sunshine Coast each year, by our estimate, and many owners only think of a paw print afterwards. Here's how to make sure yours is taken in time.
- Nose prints and fur clippings too
- Keep a scan so the original stays home

Sunshine Coast, Queensland
Arranging a paw print around Sunshine Coast
Memorials on the coast are often relaxed and personal rather than formal. People keep an urn with a photo on the bookshelf, wear a small pendant holding a pinch of ashes, or give each family member a keepsake. If an outdoor memorial will face summer storms and humidity, choose stone, sealed timber or metal that won't warp or fade, and place it somewhere shaded.
The Sunshine Coast has a lot of places people link with their animals: beaches, the lookouts of the Blackall Range, the Noosa River and the bush tracks around the Glass House Mountains. Some families scatter part of the ashes at a favourite spot and keep the rest at home in an urn or keepsake. Check local rules for national parks and beaches before scattering, and choose a quiet time of day.
Around a city this size you'll find all sorts of animals, from giant-breed dogs to horses on the edge of town. Big paws need a bigger slab of clay or a foam impression tray, and a horse needs a different approach altogether: most owners keep a hoof print pressed into a clay slab or painted onto card, with a farrier helping to lift and hold the foot.
Sunshine Coast's population is around 348,000, the 3rd-largest of the 8 Queensland communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Sunshine Coast are based about 57 miles away in Brisbane, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Brisbane (57 miles, a larger centre), Toowoomba (93 miles) and Gold Coast (97 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
115,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Sunshine Coast has (estimate)
How we calculated this
348,000 ÷ 2.5 = 139,200 households; × 49% (dog) + 34% (cat) = 115,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
9,600
dog and cat deaths per year in Sunshine Coast, our estimate
How we calculated this
115,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 9,600 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
49%[1]
49% of Australian households have at least one dog, up from 40% in 2019.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
34%[3]
34% of Australian households have at least one cat, up from 27% in 2019.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Australia
Cremation is the everyday choice in Australia: about 71%[5] of people who die there are cremated. Pet aftercare tends to follow the same habits, which means most pets here end up as a small box of ashes. Ashes don't show a paw, a nose or the shape of a toe. That's a big part of why prints matter so much in high-cremation places, and why local crematories are so used to being asked for one.
The Australia figure comes from FuneralSmart (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Heat, humidity, cold and drying times
Whatever the weather outside, think about where the finished print will live. A sunny windowsill fades ink, a bathroom's steam softens clay, and an attic or garage swings between heat and cold. A bookshelf in a living room, away from direct light, is the safest home. If you'd like something outdoors in Sunshine Coast, have a copy engraved in stone or metal and keep the original inside.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
A home kit is the cheapest way to get a print in Sunshine Coast, and it gives you as many copies as you like. Order one early, while your pet is well, because courier delivery to regional areas can take days. If you'd rather a crematorium did it, the median listed price for individually cremating a pet under 5 kg in Australia is around AUD 412[6], and a print is usually a small line on top of that.
The full price table by product is on our Queensland page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Rules in Queensland that touch on keepsakes
Renters in Queensland often can't bury a pet in the yard without the landlord's agreement, and even where they can, the grave stays behind when the lease ends. That's one reason portable memorials such as prints are so popular. The notes below set out what Queensland allows for burial and scattering; whatever they say, a print moves with you to the next address.
In Australia, paw prints are usually part of a cremation package or a small add-on, and RSPCA Queensland's memorial packages come back within 14 days[8]. Summer heat is the main practical issue: take prints indoors with the air conditioning on, keep your pet cool first and dry air-dry clay slowly out of direct sun. In the tropical north, humidity can keep clay soft for days.
Start with the Queensland rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Sunshine Coast's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
A short checklist for a clean print
- Skip the table. Bring the clay or card to wherever your pet likes to lie, on the floor or on their own bed.
- Recruit a second person whose only job is calming your pet, stroking and talking, while you handle the paw.
- Use a lick mat or a few treats so your pet stays focused ahead and doesn't keep turning around.
- Don't straighten a stiff leg. Slide a board under the paw and bring the clay up to meet it.
- Stop after a few tries when it's upsetting your pet. There's always tomorrow, or your vet can lend a hand at the next appointment.
- Try an inkless kit if your pet hates damp paws; there's nothing to wash off afterwards.
Remembering your pet through their print
Plants grow quickly in the Sunshine Coast climate, which makes a memorial garden or tree a lovely way to remember a pet. A biodegradable urn planted with a native or a fruit tree, a small engraved stone beside a garden bed, or a paw print cast set into a path all suit local homes. If you rent or might move, a keepsake or small urn you can take with you may be the better choice.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Sunshine Coast?
Usually yes. Brisbane is about 57 miles away, Toowoomba is about 93 miles away and Gold Coast is about 97 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is Sunshine Coast big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 115,000 Sunshine Coast households keep a dog or cat and around 9,600 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 348,000), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Why does the Sunshine Coast page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. FuneralSmart (2023) reports about 71%[5] of Australia residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Brisbane to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Brisbane (roughly 57 miles from Sunshine Coast) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How do I get my pet's paw print in Sunshine Coast?
You have three options. Take it yourself at home with clay or an ink kit, ideally while your pet is still well. Ask your vet or in-home euthanasia vet to take one at the appointment. Or ask the pet crematory to take one at intake, before cremation. Whichever you choose, ask for it in advance and check the print is clear before your pet leaves.
How long before the print and ashes come back in Sunshine Coast?
By our estimate, most pet crematories return ashes within about 3 to 14 days[9], and a print taken at intake usually travels with them. A print taken by your vet may come back sooner, handed to you on the day or posted separately. Ask providers in Sunshine Coast which applies, and request a snapshot of the print if you'll be waiting a week or more; it's reassuring to know it came out clear.
