How owners in Vienna get a paw print
The Vienna Woods and the Danube meadows are the green edges of the city, and some owners want a memorial connected to them. A biodegradable urn or a tree planted in a relative's garden in Lower Austria can return ashes to that landscape, while others prefer a stone or plaque at home. Ask what rules apply before scattering or burying ashes anywhere other than your own property.
Vienna's long tradition of careful funerals gives people permission to take a pet's memorial seriously too. Engraved stones, framed portraits and small shrines at home are all common. Some families choose a pet cemetery plot, others keep the urn at home and add a candle on the anniversary. There is no single right way; the aim is something you will want to look at, not avoid.
Many households in Vienna rent, move often or have more than one pet. Prints travel well: a sealed clay disc or a framed ink print moves with you, while a garden burial can't. If you have two or three animals, consider taking all their prints on the same afternoon, while everyone is well. It turns a sad job into an ordinary family project and means nobody is left out later.
Vienna's population is around 1,897,000.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep
Published cremation figures for Austria are patchy, so we can't say how common it is here. What we can say is that a print fits every custom, whether it ends up on a family altar, beside a grave or on a plain bookshelf. If local practice is unfamiliar to you, perhaps because you've recently moved, ask your vet what most families do, then take your print before that path begins.
Getting a clean print in Vienna in any season
If you're thinking of an outdoor memorial in Vienna, such as a garden stone with your pet's print pressed in, the weather decides when to make it. Concrete doesn't cure well in frost or fierce heat. Take the print now in clay or ink and keep it indoors, then make the stone in a mild month when the ground is workable.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
Europe has more pet cats than dogs: about 108 million cats[3] against roughly 89.6 million dogs[4]. Cat paws are small and neat, so a print of all four often fits on one card or a single clay disc, and many crematoria include one for cats within the package. Before choosing a provider in Vienna, ask whether VAT is included and whether the print is clay, ink or both.

Rules in Austria that touch on keepsakes
Nothing in Austria restricts a paw print, a nose print or a lock of fur. What local rules do shape is where ashes may go, and some favorite places, such as parks, beaches and trails, need the landowner's permission. If that permission is hard to get, a print can carry the memory of the place instead: frame it beside a photo taken there, or have the trail's name engraved under the paw.
In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake
- If your pet dies unexpectedly at the clinic, ask for a few minutes before you leave the room. Most teams will give you time and can bring a print kit to you.
- Say exactly what you want: clay, ink, a nose print or all three, and how many copies.
- If you can't face doing it yourself, a nurse or technician can make the print while you step out of the room; ask them to show you the result before you head home.
- Get the crematory's name and your pet's reference number from the front desk, written down.
- If no print was taken, phone the crematory as early as you can the next day and request one at check-in.
- Leave the urn and the other extras for later. Of everything on offer, only the print has to be settled now.
Keeping the print and the memory close
Many Viennese owners keep ashes at home in an urn that suits a city apartment: something modest in size, often ceramic or wood, that can sit on a shelf beside a photograph. If you would like part of the ashes set into cremation jewellery or a small keepsake, decide before the ashes are sealed, so the right amount can be set aside. A paw print taken before cremation makes a lasting companion piece.

Questions people ask
Can I take a paw print or an ashes pendant through customs?
Paw prints in clay or on card are simply craft items and need no paperwork. Ashes are different: some countries and airlines ask for the cremation certificate and prefer ashes in hand luggage, in a container that can be screened. Carry the certificate from the crematorium, keep any jewelry holding ashes in your carry-on and check the airline's and the destination's rules before you travel from Vienna.
How do I get a nose print from my cat?
Cats have small noses and dislike being fussed, so pick a sleepy moment. Use an inkless wipe or the lightest dab of pet-safe ink on a soft sponge, then touch a small folded card to the nose from the front and lift away. Expect a faint, partial print; that's normal. Take several attempts over a few days rather than persisting in one session, and wipe the nose clean afterwards so your cat doesn't lick the residue.
My pet died at night in Vienna. Is it too late for a print?
No. If your pet is at home, keep them cool on a towel and take the print yourself when you feel ready, within the first few hours if you can. If your pet is at an emergency hospital, ask the staff to take one, or tell the crematory in the morning that you want a print before cremation. You don't have to decide anything else that night.
Can a paw print be taken after my pet has died?
Yes. A print can usually be taken in the first hours after death at home, and later by a vet or crematory before cremation. If the leg has stiffened, press the clay gently onto the paw rather than forcing the paw down. A print from a relaxed, living pet tends to be crisper, which is why many owners take one while their pet is still a healthy senior.
Can my pet's paw print be turned into a tattoo?
Yes, and it's a popular choice. A tattoo artist will want a clear, high-contrast flat print, so an ink or inkless print works better than clay. Scan it at a high resolution and bring the file to your consultation. Many people have the print tattooed at actual size, sometimes with the pet's name or a nose print alongside.
Can I get a print of my bird's feet?
Yes, with care. Birds are light and their toes are delicate, so use very soft clay and the gentlest pressure, or an inkless kit with treated paper. Ink is best avoided because birds preen and may swallow it. An avian vet can help if your bird is nervous. The result is a lovely, delicate impression of the toes and scales.
