Paw Print Keepsakes in Austria: what to know
In Austria, as elsewhere, families increasingly keep a print even when they choose communal cremation or a simple burial. It's affordable, and it works whether or not ashes come home. If cost is a worry, start there: making one at home is cheap, and you can decide on finishing it, or not, much later.
Makers in Austria and abroad can turn a paw print into silver, glass, ceramic, embroidery or a tattoo, and most work from a photo or scan. That means you can keep the original safely at home and shop around. The only part that can't wait is taking the print itself.
We cover 3 communities in Austria, from Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck.

How Austria thinks about cremation, and why prints matter
Published cremation figures for Austria are patchy, so we can't say how common it is here. What we can say is that a print fits every custom, whether it ends up on a family altar, beside a grave or on a plain bookshelf. If local practice is unfamiliar to you, perhaps because you've recently moved, ask your vet what most families do, then take your print before that path begins.
Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing
In Austria, your vet is usually the first contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, which may offer a clay or ink paw print. Ask by name: a Pfotenabdruck in German, an empreinte de patte in French, a pootafdruk in Dutch. For comparison, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[1], and a UK studio casts small dog paws in resin from about £120[2].
European crematoria often price by package rather than by item. An Irish crematorium, for example, lists individual cremation from €250 for cats or dogs up to 10 kg[3]. A print is usually a modest extra within that, and jewelry or engraving from a print is priced separately by the maker. Ask providers in Austria what's included before you choose.
| Item | Published price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Individual cremation, Germany | €165 to €375[4] | Ask whether a Pfotenabdruck is included |
| Individual cremation, Ireland (up to 10 kg) | €250[3] | Ask about clay or ink prints |
| Resin paw cast, UK (small dog) | from £120[2] | For comparison |
| Clay paw print, US crematory network | $76[1] | For comparison |
| Paw print on its own in Europe | No published price found | Ask for a written quote |

Landlords, parks and permits in Austria
Burial rules in many places, including Austria, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.
Getting a paw print in Austria, step by step
- If your pet is still with you, don't wait. Pick a quiet, settled moment, perhaps once they've eaten or come back from a walk, and make the print then. Prints taken while a pet is alive tend to come out sharpest.
- Choose your method. Clay if you want something to hold; ink or an inkless sheet if jewelry or engraving might come later. The kit chooser can settle it.
- Trim the tufts between the pads using round-ended scissors, so the paw rather than the hair leaves the impression.
- Hold the leg, not the paw, and press straight down with steady pressure, then lift straight up. Take several prints and keep the clearest.
- Dry clay slowly indoors for two or three days, turning it, then seal it with a matte acrylic sealer.
- Photograph or scan the print flat in daylight. Makers can work from that image, so the original stays at home.
Remembering your pet through their print
Many families keep the clay print on a shelf beside a photo and the collar, and have a copy made for each person who loved the pet. If the family is spread out, a scanned print can be engraved onto several small keepsakes, so nobody has to choose who keeps the original.

Questions people ask
Is it better to use a local maker in Austria or order online?
Either works. A local jeweler, engraver or ceramic studio lets you see samples and hand the print over in person. Online makers usually work from a photo or scan, so the original stays at home. Ask for a proof before production and check the turnaround time.
What if my pet is cremated far from home?
In rural parts of Austria, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.
What do other owners in Austria choose for a paw print keepsake?
We don't publish made-up figures on that. We do run short, anonymous polls on what readers chose, from clay discs to engraved jewelry, and you can see the live results. They count one vote per person and aren't a scientific survey, but they give a feel for how other owners decided.
Are there rules about paw prints in Austria?
No. You can take, keep, post and display a paw print, cast or ashes pendant freely. The rules in Austria cover burial and scattering, which matter if you plan a garden stone set with the print or want to scatter ashes after keeping a pinch for jewelry.
Can I get a hoof print from a horse in Austria?
Yes. Ask your farrier to trim and clean the hoof, then press it into a thick clay slab or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Many horse owners also keep the last shoe and a braid of tail hair. Do it while your horse is still well if you can.
How much does a paw print cost in Austria?
Published prices for prints alone are scarce, because most are sold within a cremation package or quoted on request. As a benchmark, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[1], and a UK studio casts a small dog's paw in resin from about £120[2]. Ask local providers for a written price.
