Paw Print Keepsakes in Belgium: what to know
Languages, customs and prices differ across Belgium, but a clean paw print needs the same few things everywhere: a relaxed pet or a gentle hand, a firm surface, soft clay or a dry card, and a little patience. If local providers don't offer prints, a home kit ordered in advance does the job just as well.
In Belgium, most families arrange aftercare through their vet, who works with one or more pet crematoria. Prints are commonly offered but not always mentioned, so it's worth asking by name. You can also take a print yourself at home, which gives you full control over timing and the number of copies.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first
Roughly 67.98%[1] of deaths in Belgium end in cremation, which often means one family holds both preferences. A grandparent may want the dog buried under the apple tree while a younger owner would rather have ashes on the mantel. If that debate is happening in your house, start with the print. Everyone agrees on it, it has to come first anyway, and it buys you a calmer hour to decide the rest.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Belgium rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing
We haven't found a published European price for a paw print on its own, so compare like with like. Ask two providers in Belgium the same three questions: is a print included, what is it made of, and can I see it before cremation? For scale, a Norwegian pet crematorium lists separate cremation from NOK 3,790 for pets up to 20 kg[2], and a print is typically a small fraction of that.
European crematoria often price by package rather than by item. An Irish crematorium, for example, lists individual cremation from €250 for cats or dogs up to 10 kg[3]. A print is usually a modest extra within that, and jewelry or engraving from a print is priced separately by the maker. Ask providers in Belgium what's included before you choose.
| Item | Published price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Individual cremation, Germany | €165 to €375[4] | Ask whether a Pfotenabdruck is included |
| Individual cremation, Ireland (up to 10 kg) | €250[3] | Ask about clay or ink prints |
| Resin paw cast, UK (small dog) | from £120[5] | For comparison |
| Clay paw print, US crematory network | $76[6] | For comparison |
| Paw print on its own in Europe | No published price found | Ask for a written quote |

Landlords, parks and permits in Belgium
Nothing in Belgium restricts a paw print, a nose print or a lock of fur. What local rules do shape is where ashes may go, and some favorite places, such as parks, beaches and trails, need the landowner's permission. If that permission is hard to get, a print can carry the memory of the place instead: frame it beside a photo taken there, or have the trail's name engraved under the paw.
How to make sure a print is taken in time
- Mention the print when you book rather than waiting until the appointment itself, whether that's the euthanasia or the cremation. Ask the team to note it on the aftercare form.
- Ask what kind they take: a clay disc, an ink print or both. If you might want jewelry later, ask for an ink or inkless print as well.
- Ask for two copies when several people at home would each like their own.
- Ask to see or photograph the print while your pet is still at the clinic; a smudged one can then be done again.
- Check how it comes back: with you that day, or with the ashes later, and how it's labeled.
- Keep the paperwork so you can match the print, the ashes and the invoice when they arrive.
Turning a print into something lasting
Frames are the simplest option and often the most loved. An ink print on acid-free card, behind UV-filtering glass and out of direct sun, will stay crisp for decades. Add a photo and an engraved tag with your pet's name, and you have a small memorial that fits on any wall.

Questions people ask
What if my pet is cremated far from home?
In rural parts of Belgium, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.
Should I take a print of my senior pet now?
If you can, yes. A relaxed, living pet usually gives the crispest print, and there's no time pressure. Choose a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, and take several so you can keep the clearest. Many owners in Belgium say the afternoon itself becomes a memory.
Can I get more than one copy of my pet's print in Belgium?
Yes. Request two prints from your vet or crematory at the time of booking; it's a common request and usually costs little extra. Ink prints take seconds, so a home session can produce as many as you like. If you only have one original, scan it and have copies printed, engraved or cast, so every person in the family has their own without anyone giving up the original.
How much does a paw print cost in Belgium?
Published prices for prints alone are scarce, because most are sold within a cremation package or quoted on request. As a benchmark, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[6], and a UK studio casts a small dog's paw in resin from about £120[5]. Ask local providers for a written price.
Where can I get a paw print keepsake in Belgium?
Across Belgium, most vets, in-home euthanasia vets and pet crematories can take a clay or ink paw print, usually before cremation. You can also take one yourself at home with a kit. For jewelry, engraving or art, local makers and online studios both work from a clear print or a scan. Ask for the print when you book aftercare, not afterwards.
What do other owners in Belgium choose for a paw print keepsake?
We don't publish made-up figures on that. We do run short, anonymous polls on what readers chose, from clay discs to engraved jewelry, and you can see the live results. They count one vote per person and aren't a scientific survey, but they give a feel for how other owners decided.
