Getting your pet's paw print in Antwerp

Antwerp, Flanders

Getting a paw print in Antwerp: the local picture

Cremation is common for people in Belgium, so many Antwerp families are already familiar with keeping ashes at home or scattering them. For a pet, you might keep all the ashes in one urn, bury them in the garden, scatter some where rules allow, or share them among relatives in small keepsakes. In a city apartment, a compact, sturdy urn is easy to keep and to move.

Antwerp has been a centre of the diamond trade for centuries, and jewellery craft is woven into the city's identity. For some families, a pendant or ring holding a small amount of a pet's ashes feels like a natural fit for that heritage. Others prefer an urn on a bookshelf, a paw print keepsake, or a memorial stone in a courtyard garden. None is more correct than another.

Because Antwerp has several pet crematories within reach, you can actually compare what their prints look like. Some press a thick clay disc and stamp the name; others take a flat ink print on card, or a silver-clay impression that is fired into metal. Ask each one to email a photo of a recent example. A crisp outline with visible pad shapes is what you want. A blurry round blob suggests the print is done in a hurry.

Antwerp is home to about 523,000 people, the largest of the 2 Flanders communities we cover.

Our pages for Brussels (26 miles, a larger centre) and Ghent (32 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Antwerp as well.

How Belgium thinks about cremation, and why prints matter

About 67.98%[1] of people who die in Belgium are cremated. With both burial and cremation common, you'll find pet cemeteries that set a print into a headstone and crematories that return one with the ashes. The print itself is the same either way. What changes is who takes it, so decide that early.

We take the Belgium rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Antwerp, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Weather in Antwerp and your pet's print

We don't have local weather data for Antwerp, so here's the general rule: prints dislike extremes. Clay wants a room at ordinary indoor temperature, out of sun and drafts, for two or three days. Ink wants a dry paw and a dry card. Plaster and resin want warmth to set, but not heat. If a room is comfortable for you in a sweater or a T-shirt, it's fine for a print.

Seasonal scene for planning aftercare in Antwerp

Paw print costs around Antwerp, line by line

European crematoria often price by package rather than by item. An Irish crematorium, for example, lists individual cremation from €250 for cats or dogs up to 10 kg[4]. A print is usually a modest extra within that, and jewelry or engraving from a print is priced separately by the maker. Ask providers in Antwerp what's included before you choose.

The Flanders price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Rules in Flanders that touch on keepsakes

Rules in Flanders mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.

Getting a paw print in Antwerp, step by step

  1. If your pet dies while you're away from home, call the kennel, sitter or local vet and ask them to keep your pet cool and take a paw print before anything else happens.
  2. Ask them to photograph the print so you can check it's come out clearly; a text is fine.
  3. Decide whether to bring your pet home instead of arranging cremation locally; the print goes with you either way.
  4. Ask for ink rather than clay if the print will be posted to you. A flat card survives the mail far better than damp clay.
  5. If you're driving home with your pet, the car needs to stay cool; make your own print once you're back, ahead of any burial or pickup.
  6. Keep names, numbers and receipts for everyone involved, so everything can be matched up later.

Turning a print into something lasting

Antwerp's damp air off the Scheldt is hard on outdoor memorials. Painted wood soon flakes, while stone, slate and glazed ceramic stay looking cared for. On a terrace or balcony, a memorial plant in a good pot, perhaps something that flowers around the date your pet died, can be a gentle reminder. In a garden, a bio urn with a young tree is another quiet option.

Questions people ask

Which nearby towns can I compare with Antwerp?

The closest communities we cover are Brussels (about 26 miles) and Ghent (about 32 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Antwerp too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Is cremation common in Belgium?

For people, yes: about 67.98%[1] of Belgium deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Antwerp follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can my pet's paw print be turned into a tattoo?

Yes, and it's a popular choice. A tattoo artist will want a clear, high-contrast flat print, so an ink or inkless print works better than clay. Scan it at a high resolution and bring the file to your consultation. Many people have the print tattooed at actual size, sometimes with the pet's name or a nose print alongside.

My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?

You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.

What if my family can't agree who keeps the print?

Take several. Clay can be re-rolled and ink prints are quick, so there's no reason to stop at one. If the original is already made, photograph or scan it and have copies made: framed ink prints, small engraved tags or matching pendants. Our ashes sharing planner can help if you're dividing ashes between keepsakes too.

How do I get a clear print from very furry paws?

Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors, leaving the fur around the edge, which gives the print its outline. For cats, long-haired dogs and rabbits, an inkless kit or soft clay often works better than ink. Rabbits have no pads at all, so clay shows the long shape of the hind foot beautifully.
