Paw print keepsakes in Laval: where to start
Laval's rivers and green spaces are natural places for remembering. Many families recall time along the Rivière des Mille Îles or in the Centre de la nature. Scattering can be done in stages, part now and part later, so you are not forced to decide everything at once. Check park and riverbank rules, and ask permission before using private land.
Canada has a high cremation rate, and in Laval keeping a loved one's ashes at home is a familiar practice. For a pet, that could mean a ceramic urn beside family photos, a small engraved box, a paw print cast in plaster, or a bracelet holding a few ashes. If several relatives want a share, ask about dividing the ashes into small containers.
Plenty of pets in Laval came from a rescue, a foster home or a breeder who still asks after them, and those people often treasure a copy of the print too. If your pet has a story like that, take one extra ink print, or have a scan made, and send it with a short note. Some rescue groups keep a memory wall of prints and photos, and it can be a comfort to know your pet's paw hangs there.
About 438,000 people live in Laval, which makes it the 3rd-largest of the 3 Quebec communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Laval are based about 10 miles away in Montreal, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
If you want to compare providers, look at Montreal (10 miles, a larger centre), Ottawa (97 miles, a larger centre) and Quebec City (146 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
81.1%[1]
CANA projects the Canadian cremation rate will reach 81.1% by 2030.
~$32[2]
Paw-print add-ons at US crematories have a median price of about $32, from $10 to $76.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

What local funeral habits mean for a print
Cremation is the norm for people in Canada (about 81.1%[1] of deaths), and pet crematories there tend to offer a long menu of extras: paw prints, nose prints, fur clippings, name plates, photo urns. It's easy to feel you ought to say yes to everything. You don't have to. Pick the one or two things you'll actually look at in five years' time. For many families, that's a clear print and a small lock of fur.
For the Canada figure we rely on CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Laval rather than as pet data.
Weather in Laval and your pet's print
We don't have local weather data for Laval, so here's the general rule: prints dislike extremes. Clay wants a room at ordinary indoor temperature, out of sun and drafts, for two or three days. Ink wants a dry paw and a dry card. Plaster and resin want warmth to set, but not heat. If a room is comfortable for you in a sweater or a T-shirt, it's fine for a print.

Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing
Small keepsakes cost more than their size suggests. One BC crematory lists a 1 oz heart keepsake urn at CA$106[4], and by our estimate a keepsake urn can cost about a third more than a full-size wooden urn from the same provider[5]. If you want something for each family member in Laval, copies of a paw print on card or in clay are a far cheaper way to share, and a clinic or crematory print is usually a modest add-on.
The Quebec price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Burial, scattering and prints in Quebec
Rules in Quebec say a good deal about where a pet can be buried and very little about how a crematory keeps track of each animal. That's one more reason to take your own print: made before collection, it's a record you created yourself. Ask your provider how pets are tagged, and read the burial and scattering notes below for the rest.
In Canada, paw prints are usually arranged through your vet or the pet crematory at the same time as cremation, and some small studios make ceramic keepsakes from them. Cold winters are the main practical hurdle: warm clay in your hands, keep plaster work indoors and don't post a print that isn't fully dry. In Quebec, ask for an empreinte de patte.
Start with the Quebec rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Laval's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
A short checklist for a clean print
- If your pet is still with you, don't wait. Take a print on a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, when your pet is relaxed. A print from a living pet is usually the clearest.
- Choose your method. Clay for something to hold, ink or inkless paper for engraving and jewelry later. Our kit chooser helps you decide.
- Trim the tufts between the pads using round-ended scissors, so the paw rather than the hair leaves the impression.
- Hold the leg, not the paw, and press straight down with steady pressure, then lift straight up. Take several prints and keep the clearest.
- Dry clay slowly indoors for two or three days, turning it, then seal it with a matte acrylic sealer.
- Photograph or scan the print flat in daylight. Most makers only need the image, so the original never leaves home.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
Freeze-thaw cycles and heavy snow are hard on outdoor memorials in Laval. Painted plaques peel and cheap metal rusts, while granite and slate come through a Quebec winter largely untouched. If your pet dies in winter, you can keep the ashes indoors and plant a tree or perennial in May, once the ground has thawed, with a potted plant indoors bridging the wait.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Laval?
Usually yes. Montreal is about 10 miles away, Ottawa is about 97 miles away and Quebec City is about 146 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Montreal to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Montreal (roughly 10 miles from Laval) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is cremation common in Canada?
For people, yes: about 81.1%[1] of Canada deaths end in cremation, according to CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Laval follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How do I stop an ink paw print from smudging?
Dry the paw with a towel first, tape the card to a hard surface and press straight down with steady pressure, then lift straight up without sliding. Too much ink blurs the pads, so dab lightly. Take three or four prints and keep the clearest. Let the ink dry fully before touching it, especially in humid weather.
Can I get a hoof print from my horse?
Yes. Most owners take one after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the hoof: pick out the sole, dry it and press it into a thick slab of clay on a board, or paint it with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Someone should hold the foot steady. Many owners also keep the last shoe and a length of tail hair.
Is ink safe on my pet's paw?
Use a pet-safe, non-toxic, water-based ink made for paw prints, not a stamp pad or permanent marker. Wipe the paw clean straight afterwards with a damp cloth or unscented pet wipe and dry between the toes so your pet doesn't lick any off. For fluffy paws, cats and anxious pets, an inkless kit, where a special wipe reacts with treated paper, avoids ink on fur altogether.
