Paw Print Keepsakes in Beijing: what to know

If you're in Beijing and your pet's health is starting to fail, a short plan helps: who you'd call, where your pet would go and what you'd like to keep. The print is the only part of that plan with a deadline. Our planning page walks through the rest, and each city page adds local weather, prices and rules.

Once a print is safely made, Beijing offers plenty of ways to finish it: local engravers, jewelers, ceramic studios and tattoo artists, plus online makers who work from a scan. There's no rush. Keep the original at home, photograph it flat in daylight and decide what you'd like when you're ready.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first

Roughly 50%[1] of deaths in Beijing end in cremation, which often means one family holds both preferences. A grandparent may want the dog buried under the apple tree while a younger owner would rather have ashes on the mantel. If that debate is happening in your house, start with the print. Everyone agrees on it, it has to come first anyway, and it buys you a calmer hour to decide the rest.

The cremation figure for Beijing comes from Wikipedia: Cremation by country (2019). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

What owners in Beijing typically pay for a print

In Beijing, many pet funeral companies offer a farewell ceremony, individual cremation and an urn as one price. If a paw print isn't listed, ask whether they can take one before cremation. For comparison, a Singapore provider lists private cremation at SGD 280 for a cat under 5 kg[2], and a US crematory network charges $49 for ink paw prints[3].

In Japan, by our estimate about 85% of owners who state a preference want an individual pet funeral rather than a joint one[4], and packages there often include keepsake options. Even communal cremation of a small pet at one Tokyo memorial park costs JPY 14,300[5]. Wherever you are in Asia, check with providers in Beijing that a paw print is listed among the package contents, and ask to see an example.

What the law in Beijing does and doesn't cover

Paw prints sit outside most regulation, but the aftercare around them doesn't. Your local council or city, and the wider rules for Beijing, may limit burying a pet at home and scattering ashes in public places. Check the notes below before you plan a garden memorial with your pet's print pressed into it.

Getting a paw print in Beijing, step by step

  1. If your pet dies unexpectedly at the clinic, ask for a few minutes alone with them before you go. Staff will almost always allow this, and many can fetch a print kit for you there and then.
  2. Say exactly what you want: ink, clay, a nose print, or every one of them, plus the number of copies.
  3. If you can't face doing it yourself, ask a nurse or technician to take it while you wait outside, and to show it to you before you go.
  4. Get the crematory's name and your pet's reference number from the front desk, written down.
  5. If no print was taken, call the crematory first thing the next morning and ask for one at intake.
  6. Leave the urn and the other extras for later. The print is the only decision that can't wait.

Remembering your pet through their print

Some people find that making the print is itself a kind of goodbye. If that's you, it's fine to take several, keep the one that feels right and let children decorate the rest. There's no wrong way to do this, and no deadline for finishing the keepsake once the print is safely made.

Questions people ask

Can my vet in Beijing take a paw print before cremation?

Almost always, if you ask in time. Mention it when you book the appointment or the cremation, ask for it on the aftercare form and ask to see it before your pet leaves. If the vet can't, the crematory can usually take one at intake. After cremation, it's too late.

How much does a paw print cost in Beijing?

Published prices for prints alone are scarce, because most are sold within a cremation package or quoted on request. As a benchmark, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[3], and a UK studio casts a small dog's paw in resin from about £120[9]. Ask local providers for a written price.

Can I get a hoof print from a horse in Beijing?

Yes. Ask your farrier to trim and clean the hoof, then press it into a thick clay slab or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Many horse owners also keep the last shoe and a braid of tail hair. Do it while your horse is still well if you can.

Can I get more than one copy of my pet's print in Beijing?

Yes. Request two prints from your vet or crematory at the time of booking; it's a common request and usually costs little extra. Ink prints take seconds, so a home session can produce as many as you like. If you only have one original, scan it and have copies printed, engraved or cast, so every person in the family has their own without anyone giving up the original.

What if my pet is cremated far from home?

In rural parts of Beijing, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.

Can children help make a paw print?

Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.
