Arranging a paw print around Copenhagen
Denmark has dedicated pet cemeteries, and some Copenhagen families prefer a grave they can visit, especially if they have no garden of their own. Others keep ashes at home and mark the anniversary with a candle, a very Danish habit during the long dark months. Choose whichever fits how you usually remember people; there is no single right answer. Either way, it helps to decide before the ashes come home.
Copenhagen's green spaces, from the lakes to Dyrehaven's deer park north of the city, hold years of shared memories for many owners. When you book, ask whether a clay paw print is included in the fee, whether they can take an ink print too for later engraving, and whether you can take it yourself while they wait. Ashes, graves and the print that comes first
When roughly 86.48%[1] of human funerals in Denmark end in cremation, the whole system is built for speed, and pet aftercare often runs the same way. Collection can be booked for the same afternoon, and some crematories cremate within a day or two. That efficiency is a kindness, but it also shrinks the time in which a print can be taken. Ask how soon cremation will happen, and if it's quick, take the print yourself before collection.
We take the Denmark rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Copenhagen, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Heat, humidity, cold and drying times
Whatever the season in Copenhagen, take prints indoors in a comfortable room, not in direct sun or a cold garage. Dry the paw with a towel before using ink so it doesn't smudge, and tape the card down. Let clay dry on a rack at room temperature for two or three days, then seal it before framing or posting it anywhere.

Burial, scattering and prints in Capital Region
Some towns and councils in Capital Region run a collection service for pets who die at home, usually without returning any ashes. How to make sure a print is taken in time
- Mention the print when you book rather than waiting until the appointment itself, whether that's the euthanasia or the cremation. Ask the team to note it on the aftercare form.
- Ask what kind they take: a clay disc, an ink print or both. If you might want jewelry later, ask for an ink or inkless print as well.
- Ask for two copies when several people at home would each like their own.
- Ask to see or photograph the print while your pet is still at the clinic; a smudged one can then be done again.
- Check how it comes back: in your hands the same day, or alongside the ashes later, and what name goes on it.
- Keep the paperwork so that, once everything is returned, the invoice, ashes and print can be tied together.
Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up
Copenhagen apartments reward small, well-designed keepsakes, and Danish taste leans toward simple wood, ceramic and stone. A plain urn on a bookshelf, a pendant or a paw print cast in clay suits most homes. If you want engraving, ask to see a proof, because Danish letters such as æ, ø and å are sometimes mishandled by suppliers abroad. Is a paw print included when a vet comes to our home in Copenhagen?
Often, but not always. Many home-visit vets bring a clay kit and include one print in their fee; others charge for it or leave it to the crematory. Ask when you book, and check whether a flat ink copy is possible as well. Home goodbyes are no longer unusual: in the Dog Aging Project, 22.8% of dogs who were euthanized died at home[6]. You can also take your own print before the vet arrives.
How much does a paw print keepsake cost in Copenhagen?
Local published prices for prints are scarce outside the US; most vets and crematories include them in a package or quote on request. As a benchmark, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[7] and a UK studio casts a small dog's paw in resin from about £120[8]. Ask for a written local price.
How do I get my pet's paw print in Copenhagen?
You have three options. Take it yourself at home with clay or an ink kit, ideally while your pet is still well. Ask your vet or in-home euthanasia vet to take one at the appointment. Or ask the pet crematory to take one at intake, before cremation. Whichever you choose, ask for it in advance and check the print is clear before your pet leaves.
