Paw Print Keepsakes in Denmark: what to know

Paw print keepsakes in Denmark follow the same basic choices as anywhere: a clay impression, an ink or inkless print, or a 3D cast, taken by you, your vet or the crematory. What differs is how aftercare is organized and priced, and which local rules apply to burial and scattering. This page covers Denmark as a whole; each city page adds local detail.

Languages, customs and prices differ across Denmark, but a clean paw print needs the same few things everywhere: a relaxed pet or a gentle hand, a firm surface, soft clay or a dry card, and a little patience. If local providers don't offer prints, a home kit ordered in advance does the job just as well.

We cover 3 communities in Denmark, from Copenhagen, Aarhus and Odense.

What local funeral habits mean for a print

Cremation is the norm for people in Denmark (about 86.48%[1] of deaths), and pet crematories there tend to offer a long menu of extras: paw prints, nose prints, fur clippings, name plates, photo urns. It's easy to feel you ought to say yes to everything. You don't have to. Pick the one or two things you'll actually look at in five years' time. For many families, that's a clear print and a small lock of fur.

That Denmark rate is a human statistic published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Denmark

We haven't found reliable published prices for paw prints in Europe; most pet crematoria include them in a package or quote on request. For context, individual cremation in Germany is listed at about €165 to €375[2]. In Denmark, ask your vet or the crematorium for a written price that shows the print, the urn and any engraving separately.

Europe has more pet cats than dogs: about 108 million cats[3] against roughly 89.6 million dogs[4]. Cat paws are small and neat, so a print of all four often fits on one card or a single clay disc, and many crematoria include one for cats within the package. Before choosing a provider in Denmark, ask whether VAT is included and whether the print is clay, ink or both.

What Denmark allows after your pet dies

Nothing in Denmark restricts a paw print, a nose print or a lock of fur. What local rules do shape is where ashes may go, and some favorite places, such as parks, beaches and trails, need the landowner's permission. If that permission is hard to get, a print can carry the memory of the place instead: frame it beside a photo taken there, or have the trail's name engraved under the paw.

Getting a paw print in Denmark, step by step

  1. Skip the table. Take the clay or card to your pet instead, wherever they're comfortable, whether that's their bed or a patch of floor.
  2. Recruit a second person whose only job is calming your pet, stroking and talking, while you handle the paw.
  3. Use a lick mat or a few treats to keep your pet's attention forward and their head still.
  4. Don't straighten a stiff leg. Work with the position it's in: slip a board beneath the paw and raise the clay to it.
  5. Stop after a few tries if your pet gets stressed. Try again tomorrow, or ask your vet to help at the next visit.
  6. Try an inkless kit if your pet hates damp paws; there's nothing to wash off afterwards.

Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up

Some families bring the print out once a year, on the anniversary or on the day their pet came home, and add something new: a photo, a pressed flower, a note from each person. Over time the box or frame becomes a record of how the family carried the memory. If an anniversary hits harder than expected, you're not alone; in RSPCA research on pet loss, 66.9%[9] of owners were surprised by how intense their grief was.

The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask

Can I get more than one copy of my pet's print in Denmark?

Yes. Request two prints from your vet or crematory at the time of booking; it's a common request and usually costs little extra. Ink prints take seconds, so a home session can produce as many as you like. If you only have one original, scan it and have copies printed, engraved or cast, so every person in the family has their own without anyone giving up the original.

Can my vet in Denmark take a paw print before cremation?

Almost always, if you ask in time. Mention it when you book the appointment or the cremation, ask for it on the aftercare form and ask to see it before your pet leaves. If the vet can't, the crematory can usually take one at intake. After cremation, it's too late.

Can I get a hoof print from a horse in Denmark?

Yes. Ask your farrier to trim and clean the hoof, then press it into a thick clay slab or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Many horse owners also keep the last shoe and a braid of tail hair. Do it while your horse is still well if you can.

Are there rules about paw prints in Denmark?

No. You can take, keep, post and display a paw print, cast or ashes pendant freely. The rules in Denmark cover burial and scattering, which matter if you plan a garden stone set with the print or want to scatter ashes after keeping a pinch for jewelry.

Is it better to use a local maker in Denmark or order online?

Either works. A local jeweler, engraver or ceramic studio lets you see samples and hand the print over in person. Online makers usually work from a photo or scan, so the original stays at home. Ask for a proof before production and check the turnaround time.

What if my pet is cremated far from home?

In rural parts of Denmark, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.
