Getting a paw print in Paris: the local picture

A memorial stone or plaque can suit a Parisian balcony or window box, especially if it's small, flat and weatherproof enough for winter rain. Families with a maison de campagne often plant a tree over a biodegradable urn there, creating a place to visit on long weekends. Paw prints, fur keepsakes and engraved tags are small memorials that fit easily into a city apartment and can sit beside a photo on the mantel.

Paris apartments are compact, so many families choose a small urn on a mantel or bookshelf, a photo urn, or a piece of cremation jewelry. Paris has a long tradition of fine jewelry and craftsmanship, and a pendant or ring holding a pinch of ashes, or engraved with a pet's name, can feel especially fitting. Ask for a small portion of ashes to be set aside before the main urn is sealed.

Long commutes and full diaries in Paris mean many pets spend the day with a dog walker, a sitter or a daycare. If your pet is elderly or unwell, have a short conversation with whoever cares for them while you're out: who to call first, which vet to use, and that you'd like a paw print taken before anyone arranges collection. Leave a small clay kit with your emergency notes, so the one request that can't wait isn't lost.

Paris's population is around 2,161,000, the largest of the 3 Ile-de-France communities we cover.

For a second opinion on price, Neuilly-sur-Seine (4 miles), Versailles (11 miles) and Reims (81 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Paris routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

44.91%[1]

In 2023, 44.91% of deaths in France led to cremation.

~$32[2]

Paw-print add-ons at US crematories have a median price of about $32, from $10 to $76.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

A pet at home in Paris

Local customs and the keepsake you keep

Burial is still more common than cremation for people in France, where about 44.91%[1] are cremated. Many pet owners here bury too, often on their own land where that's allowed. That gives you something city cremation doesn't: time. You can take a paw print at home, calmly, before the burial, with no one waiting at the door.

Source for the France number: ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). Nobody publishes a pet cremation rate for Paris, so the human figure is the best local signal available.

Clay, ink and the local climate

We don't have local weather data for Paris, so here's the general rule: prints dislike extremes. Clay wants a room at ordinary indoor temperature, out of sun and drafts, for two or three days. Ink wants a dry paw and a dry card. Plaster and resin want warmth to set, but not heat. If a room is comfortable for you in a sweater or a T-shirt, it's fine for a print.

Seasonal scene for planning aftercare in Paris

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing

In Paris, your vet is usually the first contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, which may offer a clay or ink paw print. Ask by name: a Pfotenabdruck in German, an empreinte de patte in French, a pootafdruk in Dutch. For comparison, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[4], and a UK studio casts small dog paws in resin from about £120[5].

Burial, scattering and prints in Ile-de-France

Paw prints sit outside most regulation, but the aftercare around them doesn't. Your local council or city, and the wider rules for Ile-de-France, may limit burying a pet at home and scattering ashes in public places. Check the notes below before you plan a garden memorial with your pet's print pressed into it.

In France, a crématorium animalier can often take an empreinte de patte before cremation, and some vets keep clay kits at the clinic. Ask when you arrange collection, and ask whether the print comes back with the ashes or separately. In the hot south, dry air-dry clay slowly indoors to stop the toes cracking.

Your paw print plan for Paris

  1. If your pet is still with you, don't wait. Pick a quiet, settled moment, perhaps once they've eaten or come back from a walk, and make the print then. Prints taken while a pet is alive tend to come out sharpest.
  2. Choose your method. Clay for something to hold, ink or inkless paper for engraving and jewelry later. Our kit chooser helps you decide.
  3. Trim the tufts between the pads using round-ended scissors, so the paw rather than the hair leaves the impression.
  4. Hold the leg, not the paw, push down evenly in one motion, and raise it again without sliding. Make a few attempts and choose the sharpest one.
  5. Dry clay slowly indoors over two to three days, flipping it now and then, and finish with a coat of matte acrylic sealer.
  6. Photograph or scan the print flat in daylight. Most makers only need the image, so the original never leaves home.

Turning a print into something lasting

France has a long history of pet memorials, and one of the world's oldest pet cemeteries lies just outside Paris. Today, families choose between a plot in a pet cemetery, a memorial niche, an urn kept at home with a photo and candle, or a piece of jewelry holding a pinch of ashes. On Toussaint, 1 November, when French families place chrysanthemums on graves, some remember their pets too, whether at a cemetery or beside an urn at home.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Paris?

Usually yes. Neuilly-sur-Seine is about 4 miles away, Versailles is about 11 miles away and Reims is about 81 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Why does the Paris page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) reports about 44.91%[1] of France residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Can my pet's paw print be turned into a tattoo?

Yes, and it's a popular choice. A tattoo artist will want a clear, high-contrast flat print, so an ink or inkless print works better than clay. Scan it at a high resolution and bring the file to your consultation. Many people have the print tattooed at actual size, sometimes with the pet's name or a nose print alongside.

Is a paw print included when a vet comes to our home in Paris?

Often, but not always. Many home-visit vets bring a clay kit and include one print in their fee; others charge for it or leave it to the crematory. Ask when you book, and check whether a flat ink copy is possible as well. Home goodbyes are no longer unusual: in the Dog Aging Project, 22.8% of dogs who were euthanized died at home[7]. You can also take your own print before the vet arrives.

My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?

You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.

What if my family can't agree who keeps the print?

Take several. Clay can be re-rolled and ink prints are quick, so there's no reason to stop at one. If the original is already made, photograph or scan it and have copies made: framed ink prints, small engraved tags or matching pendants. Our ashes sharing planner can help if you're dividing ashes between keepsakes too.
